Use a phone’s 200MP mode when you expect to crop heavily, inspect fine detail, or make a large print; use the regular or lower-resolution mode for most everyday photos, especially when you want smaller files or faster repeat shots. A 200MP label means the image contains 200 million pixels—not that every photo will automatically look better.
What 200MP changes—and what it does not
Megapixels count image pixels. A 200MP file preserves more of them than a 50MP or 12.5MP file, giving you more room to crop while retaining pixel dimensions. Samsung Semiconductor says its sensor technology can combine pixels to produce a smaller 12.5MP image, while supported devices may also offer 50MP and 200MP choices. Samsung describes a 200MP image as containing 16 times the pixel information of a 12.5MP image and four times that of a 50MP image. Those are pixel-count comparisons, not promises that perceived sharpness or compressed file size will improve by the same factor. Lens performance, subject movement, focus, lighting, processing, and the final screen or print all affect the result. The cited material does not establish that 200MP mode improves low-light, color, or motion performance in every situation.

When to use full resolution
Choose 200MP for a planned crop or detailed output
Use full resolution when you have a still subject, can take time to compose, and expect to crop substantially or produce a large output. More source pixels give you greater flexibility to reframe later. Samsung’s example shows that cropping a 200MP image by half in both dimensions leaves a 50MP image; this illustrates the pixel-count trade-off, not a guaranteed quality outcome in every scene.

Use the regular mode for routine photos
For casual snapshots, everyday sharing, and situations where you may take several frames quickly, the default or a smaller resolution is usually the more practical choice. It uses less storage, and high-resolution processing can slow the interval before the next photo. Samsung Semiconductor specifically presents 12.5MP as a smaller, storage-saving option on its sensor technology.
- Use full resolution: deliberate shots, likely heavy crops, or detailed large-format output.
- Use a lower or default resolution: routine sharing, limited storage, or moments when you need to capture successive frames promptly.
How to turn on high resolution on a Galaxy S23
These instructions apply to Samsung’s Galaxy S23 camera guidance; the available resolutions and controls vary by model. Samsung’s 200MP instructions specifically concern the Galaxy S23 Ultra, so do not assume every S23 model—or another brand’s phone—has the same options.

- Tap the image ratio/resolution control in the camera viewfinder.
- Select a supported high-resolution option, such as 50MP or 200MP, if it appears for your model and camera.
Samsung’s Galaxy S23 support guidance covers the resolution control and high-resolution photos. If your phone’s camera app does not show the same choices, check its model-specific support page rather than relying on this menu path.
How much storage a 200MP photo can use
Samsung Pakistan’s Galaxy S23 support page, last updated March 6, 2023, estimates about 25–30 MB per 200MP photo and 6–9 MB per 50MP photo. These are Samsung’s estimates for that support context, not universal file sizes. Actual files vary by phone, image content, aspect ratio, processing, and saved format. Samsung’s figures do not establish a precise size for another phone or for every 12.5MP image.

For a realistic estimate on your own device, take several photos at the resolution you plan to use, check their file details, and average the sizes. Multiply that average by the number of photos you expect to keep. Do not assume that four times the pixels means four times the file size: pixel count and compressed file size are different measures.
High-resolution capture can slow repeated shots
Samsung says its Galaxy S23 Ultra takes longer to process high-resolution images, and the interval can grow when you capture several in a row. Samsung Pakistan’s Galaxy S23 support page estimates roughly 5–6 seconds before the next high-resolution shot. Treat that as a model-specific estimate from Samsung’s 2023 guidance, not a benchmark for every 200MP phone. Samsung Mexico also notes that high-resolution images may have a longer interval between shots than normal-resolution images in its Galaxy S23 Ultra support article.

If the moment is moving or you need several quick frames, use the regular mode unless the extra pixels are essential and you can allow time for processing.
Ways to manage space on supported Samsung phones
Consider HEIF if your workflow supports it
Samsung’s Galaxy S26 camera support page lists HEIF as a Photo mode option for saving space. Availability and compatibility depend on the phone and the apps or devices that will open the files. External USB storage is documented for video, not 200MP stills
Samsung’s Galaxy S26 support documentation describes a “Save extra storage” option for recording video directly to USB storage. It does not establish that the camera can save 200MP still photos directly to an external drive. A USB-C drive is only relevant if your phone and workflow support the external-storage feature you need; it is not required to use high-resolution photo mode.
What to check on phones from other brands
The menu path, supported resolutions, file sizes, and processing behavior above are Samsung examples. The available official guidance here does not establish equivalent details for other manufacturers’ 200MP phones. Check the camera app and the support page for your exact model before applying Samsung’s settings or estimates.
