Start by checking the PFAS names, concentrations, units, sample details, laboratory method, and comparison benchmark on the report. Then contact your water utility if you use public water, or your state environmental or health agency if you rely on a private well.
1. Read the report before deciding what to do
Find the exact PFAS analytes reported and the concentration for each. Note the units, reporting limits, sample date and location, laboratory, and analytical method. A result cannot be interpreted responsibly without knowing which compounds were tested and what the measured values represent.

Check what benchmark the report uses. Applicable standards and recommendations can depend on your state and the specific PFAS. There is no single locally applicable threshold to apply without those details. For a private well, compare results with applicable state standards; if your state has none, EPA guidance says to use EPA health-advisory levels for PFOA and PFOS. That comparison is not a substitute for state or medical advice.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor self-testing, EPA says: “If you choose to test your water yourself, it is important to use a state-certified laboratory using EPA-developed testing methods.” Ask your state laboratory certification program which labs and methods it currently recommends. EPA Methods 533 and 537.1 are approved for federal PFAS drinking-water monitoring and can measure 29 PFAS in drinking water, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency page accessed October 3, 2026. That does not mean an individual test measures every PFAS compound. If the report is unclear or came from a home test, ask the state program about an appropriate certified lab and method. Follow the lab’s sampling instructions; there is no universal retest interval.

- FAST, CLEAR REPORTS: Verified, accurate results within 5 business days of sample delivery to lab. Our easy-to-read, actionable reports interpret your levels against federal guidelines, and help educate you on your home's water safety.
- LEADING WATER TESTING LAB IN THE USA: Every test is processed in our USA based lab, accredited by ISO/IEC 17025 and certified by the EPA & NELAP, ensuring accurate and quality results.
- ALL-IN-ONE KIT: This simple test kit includes clear instructions, sample collection materials and prepaid return shipping, with no hidden costs.
2. Contact the right authority for your water source
If you use public water
Contact your local water utility. Ask which PFAS were detected, at what levels, whether the system is monitoring, and what actions it is taking. Some systems may not have that information readily available. Ask the utility and your state or local health or environmental agency what steps, if any, are recommended for your service area.
If you use a private well
Contact your state environmental or health agency for local advice, including laboratory options and applicable standards. EPA does not regulate private wells or provide recommended private-well standards, so do not treat federal guidance as a substitute for your state’s direction.

3. Consider exposure reduction while you seek advice
EPA says private-well users who remain concerned may consider another water source for activities where people may swallow water: drinking, cooking, preparing food or baby formula, brushing teeth, and similar uses. This is an option in the cited private-well guidance, not a universal emergency order. Public-water customers should follow advice from their utility and state or local authorities rather than assume that the same step applies to their system.
Drinking water is one possible PFAS exposure route, alongside food and some consumer or environmental sources. If you have health concerns, ATSDR recommends discussing your exposure history and local or state environmental information with a healthcare professional. Its clinician guidance says no approved medical treatment reduces PFAS in the body; reducing exposure is the primary strategy. A water result by itself does not diagnose illness, and detox products should not be treated as a solution.

4. If you consider a filter, verify the exact PFAS claim
EPA identifies granular activated carbon (GAC, sometimes called charcoal filtration), reverse osmosis (RO), and ion-exchange resin as treatment approaches that can reduce PFAS. Systems may be pitcher, faucet, under-sink or other point-of-use units, or whole-home systems. Point-of-use systems treat water at a particular tap; whole-home systems treat water entering the home. Choose coverage based on the concern and local or professional advice, not an assumption that every household use requires the same treatment.
Before buying, look up the exact model in an independent certification body’s directory and confirm that the listing specifically says PFAS reduction. EPA says to look for NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 specifically for PFAS reduction; it links to directories from CSA Group, IAPMO, NSF, UL, and WQA. A generic NSF mark or broad marketing language does not establish a PFAS-reduction claim. Check which PFAS the listing covers and review its performance information.

EPA says current certifications focus on PFOA and PFOS; they do not yet indicate that a filter will reduce PFAS to the levels EPA has set for a drinking-water standard. Certification bodies are working on updates, so check the current listing and EPA guidance before relying on a claim. EPA’s stated broad filter-cost range is $20 to more than $1,000, excluding maintenance, on a page updated August 3, 2026. It is not a current price quote. Include replacement cartridges, installation, maintenance, and disposal when comparing options. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule: an overdue filter may increase exposure risk.
Taste, smell, and appearance cannot establish whether water is safe. CDC notes that harmful chemicals may not change those qualities. Base a filter decision on test results and the contaminant the exact model is certified to reduce, not on how the water looks or tastes.

5. Know what a PFAS blood test can—and cannot—tell you
ATSDR says, “A blood test for PFAS will not identify a current or future health problem or provide information on treatment.” Blood levels do not predict future health outcomes, pinpoint an exposure source, or show when or how long exposure occurred; tests may measure only certain PFAS. Discuss possible benefits and limitations with a healthcare provider rather than treating a blood test as a diagnosis or as a replacement for reducing an ongoing exposure.
