Upload a world only to a server running the same Minecraft edition: Java worlds belong on Java server software, while Bedrock worlds belong on Bedrock Dedicated Server or Bedrock Realms. Make a dated backup first, stop the destination before replacing files, copy the complete save folder to the correct location, and then point the server configuration at that folder. Realms avoids file administration by providing download and upload controls, while a dedicated server gives you direct control over files, settings, backups, and networking.

Choose the right upload route
Your first decision is the destination, not the upload tool. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different save formats and different server software. A Java save is not a Bedrock Dedicated Server world simply because both folders contain a Minecraft world, and a Bedrock save should not be dropped into a Java server directory.

Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation states that “Worlds created by Minecraft: Bedrock Edition can be copied to Bedrock Dedicated Server.” The official Java server guidance likewise starts with the Java server JAR, a compatible Java runtime and acceptance of the EULA. The official server software for both editions is free to download; hosting, hardware and Realm subscriptions are separate considerations.
Prepare the world and destination
Make a rollback copy
Before touching the server, make a dated copy of the entire world folder. Keep the copy outside the destination server directory, and do not overwrite it with a newer copy until you have confirmed that the upload works. If you are replacing a Realm world, download the current Realm world first so you have a rollback copy of the live slot.

Confirm edition and version
Check the edition of the world and the edition of the server. Also check the Minecraft version expected by the server and connect with a client using that same version. A version mismatch can produce startup errors, missing content or a world that appears not to load even when the files are in the right place.
Stop the destination before copying
Stop the dedicated server cleanly before replacing its world. A running process may still be writing chunks or metadata while you copy, leaving a partial or inconsistent save. For a hosted server, use the host’s Stop control and wait until the console or status page reports that the process has ended.
Check practical constraints
- Ensure the destination has enough disk space for the complete uncompressed world and temporary upload or extraction files.
- Use an account with permission to create, delete and rename files in the server directory.
- If you are transferring between computers, use the host’s file manager, SFTP or FTP, or compress the folder before transferring it. Extract it on the server machine before starting the server.
- Record the current world-folder name and configuration values before changing them, so you can restore the previous world if necessary.
Upload a world to a Java server
1. Create and initialize the Java server
Download the official Java server JAR and place it in a dedicated, empty server folder. Install a Java runtime compatible with the Minecraft server version. Run the JAR from that folder once; it will create the initial server files and stop or refuse normal operation until the EULA is accepted. A typical command after naming the file server.jar is:
java -jar server.jar noguiOpen the generated eula.txt, read the agreement, and change eula=false to eula=true only if you accept it. Start the JAR again so the normal server files and world directory are generated. The exact launch command can vary with the server implementation and operating system, but it must run from the server folder so relative paths resolve correctly.
2. Identify the complete source save
Locate the single-player Java world you want to move and select its complete save folder, not an individual file inside it. Preserve the folder’s internal structure. If your file manager shows an outer folder containing another folder with the actual save, inspect the levels carefully: the folder you upload must be the one whose save files are directly inside it, not a wrapper created by an archive or a previous copy.
3. Stop the new server
If the server is running, stop it from its console or hosting panel and wait for the process to finish. Never replace a Java world while the server is active. If the generated server has already created a blank world, keep a backup of that folder before removing or renaming it.

4. Copy the world into the server directory
Upload the complete world folder into the Java server installation using one of these methods:
- Use a local file copy when the source and server are on the same computer.
- Use the host’s web file manager for a small or nearby transfer.
- Use SFTP or FTP for a remote machine, then verify that the transfer completed before extracting or renaming anything.
Place the folder at the level expected by the server. Avoid nesting the actual save one directory too deep, such as server-folder/world-wrapper/actual-world-files when the configuration points at world-wrapper. The configured folder should contain the save files directly.
5. Select the uploaded save
Configure the server to load the uploaded folder. Vanilla Java commonly uses the level-name property in server.properties; set it to the uploaded folder’s name. Other Java server implementations may expose a different property or directory convention, so follow that implementation’s configuration rather than assuming every server uses identical names. Keep spelling, capitalization and spaces exactly as they appear in the folder name.
6. Start and verify
Start the server and watch the console from the beginning of the boot process. Look for the selected world name and for errors involving permissions, missing files, incompatible versions or a path that cannot be opened. Once startup completes, connect with the matching Java Edition version and check several areas:

- Your expected spawn point and a familiar landmark are present.
- Player inventories, builds and important areas appear intact.
- The server has not generated a new blank world beside the uploaded one.
- Operators, whitelist settings, plugins or other server configuration have not been confused with the world upload itself.
After verification, make another dated backup from the working server copy. Keep the original single-player backup as well; the server may update the world to the server version when it first opens it.
7. Make it reachable to other players
A successful upload does not automatically make a server reachable over the internet. Remote players may need a firewall rule and router port forwarding, and they must use the server’s address and configured port. The official Java FAQ identifies port 25565 for the standard Java server, but a server administrator can change the configured port. Open only the port the server actually uses, and confirm that the operating-system firewall, router and hosting provider all permit it.

Upload a world to Bedrock Dedicated Server
1. Install the supported server package
Download the official Bedrock Dedicated Server package for a supported Windows or Ubuntu Linux system. Extract it into an empty server folder. Start it once so it can generate worlds/, server.properties and the other required directories and files. Stop it after the first initialization completes.
2. Find the local Bedrock world
Bedrock stores local worlds in its minecraftWorlds directory. The folder names may be cryptic, so do not choose a folder by name alone. Open each candidate’s levelname.txt and use the readable world name to identify the correct save. Copy the complete world folder, preserving everything inside it.
3. Transfer and place the folder
With the server stopped, copy the world folder into the Bedrock server’s worlds/ directory. For a remote server, compress the folder or use a file-transfer service, upload it, and extract it on the server machine. The final layout should be equivalent to:
bedrock-server/worlds/MyWorld/The files belonging to the world must be directly inside MyWorld. Do not leave an archive in worlds/, and do not create an extra level such as worlds/MyWorld/MyWorld/ unless the server documentation for your version explicitly requires it.
4. Use a simple folder name
Rename the copied folder to a simple name without special characters. A short name such as MyWorld reduces errors when you edit the configuration and makes console messages easier to read. The folder name is significant; it is not merely a label shown in a file manager.
5. Set level-name
Open the Bedrock server’s server.properties and set:

level-name=MyWorldReplace MyWorld with the exact folder name, including capitalization. Do not use the readable name from levelname.txt if you renamed the folder; use the actual name now present under worlds/. Save the file before starting the server.
6. Start and confirm the selected world
Start the Bedrock server and watch its console. Confirm that it reports the selected folder and does not create a fresh default world. Connect from a Bedrock client using the same supported version and inspect known builds, storage areas and the spawn region. If the server loads a new world, stop it and re-check the spelling of level-name, the location under worlds/ and whether an extra nested directory was introduced during extraction.
7. Configure remote access
Bedrock uses the server ports shown in server.properties. Players outside the local network may need firewall permission and router port forwarding for those configured ports, plus the correct public address and port. A local connection test and an external connection test are different: success on the same computer does not prove that the internet route is open.

Upload or replace a world on Realms
Realms is the managed option when you want to upload a Bedrock world without operating a dedicated server. The service handles the server process, while the owner chooses which world occupies a Realm slot.
Protect the current Realm world
Download the current Realm world before replacing it. This creates a rollback copy if the new upload is incomplete, unsuitable or simply not the world you intended to publish. Do not treat a Realm replacement as an overwrite with no recovery path.
Use the standard Realm world controls
Open the Realm management interface, choose the Realm and slot, select the world you want to use, and choose the control that loads or replaces the slot’s world. Labels can vary by client version, but the operation is performed from the Realm’s world-management screen rather than by copying files into a server folder. Wait for the upload to finish before joining the Realm and verify the world in-game.
Publish from Bedrock Editor Realms
For a Bedrock Editor project, select the Realm and target slot, use Download to create a backup when needed, then choose Publish to upload the project to the selected slot with the chosen settings. Microsoft describes Publish as: “Publishes the current project to the selected Realms slot using the chosen settings.” Confirm the selected slot carefully if the Realm has more than one available slot.

Can you transfer a Java world to Bedrock?
Not by uploading the folder directly. The official material for Java servers and Bedrock Dedicated Server describes separate workflows and does not document direct Java-to-Bedrock or Bedrock-to-Java upload compatibility. Treat cross-edition migration as a separate, tool-dependent conversion project. A converted result may need its own validation for terrain, inventories, entities, commands, redstone behavior, add-ons and version compatibility; none of those outcomes is guaranteed by copying files.
If your immediate goal is simply to play the existing world with friends, keep the world on its original edition and choose the matching dedicated server or Realm route. Attempting to solve an edition mismatch by renaming folders or changing level-name will not convert the save format.
Troubleshoot a world that will not load
The server starts a new blank world
- Stop the server before making another change.
- Confirm that the uploaded folder is in the correct destination directory.
- Check for an extra wrapper or nested folder created during upload or extraction.
- For Bedrock, make
level-nameexactly match the folder name underworlds/. - For Java, verify that the server’s world-selection property points to the uploaded folder, not the old default name.
- Read the complete startup console for a path, permission or version error.
The world appears but progress or builds are missing
Stop using the new copy and compare it with your dated backup. A partial transfer, incomplete extraction or incorrect folder level can leave the server with only part of the save. Transfer the complete folder again while the server is stopped, then test before allowing players to make new changes.
The server refuses to start after the upload
Check the console first. Common categories are an incompatible server or client version, unreadable files, insufficient disk space, incorrect permissions or a configuration typo. Restore the previous working world and configuration from backup if you need to bring the service online while investigating the new copy.

Test the firewall on the server machine, router port forwarding and the address and port given to players. Java’s standard port is commonly 25565, while Bedrock uses the values in server.properties; neither statement overrides a custom port configured by the administrator. Also verify that clients are using the same edition as the server.
The uploaded world is not visible in a Realm
Confirm that you are managing the correct Realm and slot, that the upload has completed, and that you used the world-management control rather than leaving the world only on the local device. Download the current slot before trying again so the previous state can be restored.
