What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To host a Vault Hunters Third Edition server, download the matching server-files ZIP from the official Vault Hunters project on CurseForge, run its included Forge server files with Java 17, accept the EULA, and give players a network address they can reach. Every player must use the identical Minecraft, Forge, and modpack release. You can run the server on a computer at home or use managed hosting; the first gives you control and avoids a recurring host bill, while the second handles much of the networking and administration.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
Third Edition is built for Minecraft 1.18.2 and Java 17. The official wiki recommends 8 GB of RAM for the client modpack, while BisectHosting states that a Third Edition server needs at least 10 GB of RAM to run smoothly. Treat those as separate, context-specific figures rather than a per-player formula.

What you need before creating the server
Lock the exact game version
Choose the Vault Hunters release first. The server pack, client profile, Minecraft version, Forge loader, and Java runtime must agree. For Third Edition, the official documentation identifies Minecraft 1.18.2 and Java 17. A newer Java installation or a different Minecraft release may start incorrectly, fail during mod loading, or produce registry and world-loading errors.
Write down the release number you intend to use and give that same information to everyone in your group. Do not download a generic Minecraft server and try to add the client modpack afterward; the server-files ZIP is the authoritative bundle for the release.

Hardware, memory, and storage
- Client baseline: the official wiki lists approximately 3 GB of free disk space and recommends 8 GB of RAM for the Third Edition client modpack.
- Server baseline: BisectHosting says a Third Edition server requires at least 10 GB of RAM to run smoothly. That is a provider recommendation for the server, not a guaranteed requirement for every group or hardware configuration.
- Storage growth: the live world expands as players explore. Logs, backups, and update archives consume additional space, so leave substantially more room than the initial download and keep backups on a different drive or storage location when possible.
- Reliability: a home server needs to remain powered and connected whenever friends want to play. A managed host generally supplies continuous operation, restart controls, and a control panel instead.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Both routes run the same modpack. The practical difference is who operates the machine, network, and maintenance tasks.
| Consideration | Self-hosted computer | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cost | No hosting bill, although you pay for electricity, hardware, and internet service. | Monthly hosting charge; plan features and prices vary by provider and location. |
| Administration | You install Java and Forge, accept the EULA, edit settings, update files, troubleshoot crashes, and create backups. | The provider supplies a control panel, restart tools, and documented modpack installation. |
| Network exposure | Usually requires a fixed local address, firewall permission, and router port forwarding for players outside your home. | Provider networking normally removes the need to expose your home router. |
| Control | Direct access to files, scripts, logs, backups, and operating-system settings. | Convenient management, but subject to the host’s panel, policies, and available file access. |
Self-hosting suits an owner who is comfortable maintaining Java, Forge, a router, and backups. Managed hosting is usually the simpler choice when the group wants to play without maintaining a reachable home machine.
Route A: host Vault Hunters on your own computer
-
Download the correct server pack
Open the official Vault Hunters Third Edition project on CurseForge and download the server-files ZIP for the exact release you selected. Do not use the client-only profile as a server. Keep the ZIP so you can identify the version later and reproduce the installation if the machine fails.
-
Create a dedicated server directory
Make a folder used only for this server, such as a directory on a drive with enough free space for the world and backups. Extract the server-files ZIP into it without nesting the contents several levels deep. The included Forge launch files and scripts should remain together; moving individual mods or libraries out of the pack can break the startup process.
Install Java 17 and verify that the launch script uses that runtime rather than another Java version already on the computer. Follow the script and file names supplied with your release because launch parameters can change between packs.

Set the server properties
Edit
server.propertieswhile the server is stopped. Set a world name that your group will recognize, choose the desired difficulty, and decide whether to enable the whitelist. Adjust view distance and simulation distance conservatively if the machine is under load. Keep the selected server port recorded; the default may be changed, and the value in this file is the port that must match your firewall and router rules.Use a whitelist for a private friends’ server. Add players by their exact in-game names through the server console or the administration method supplied by your setup. Avoid changing several unrelated settings at once; if a problem appears, a small change is easier to identify and reverse.
-
Make the computer reachable
Players on the same home network may be able to connect using the server computer’s local address. Players elsewhere need an address that reaches your home network. Give the server computer a reserved or fixed local address so a router reboot does not invalidate the forwarding rule.
Allow the Java or Forge server through the computer’s firewall on the network profile you actually use. In the router’s port-forwarding section, forward the Minecraft port selected in
server.propertiesto the server computer’s fixed local address. Router menus and ISP restrictions differ, so use the documentation for your particular device. Do not forward a different port than the one configured in the server file.Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Minecoins are a perfect gift for Minecraft players!
Test from outside the home network, for example with a friend on a different connection. A successful local test does not prove that internet access works. If outside connections fail, check the server is running, confirm the local address has not changed, verify the firewall rule, and check whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT that prevents inbound forwarding.
-
Install the matching client for every player
Each player should install the same Vault Hunters release through CurseForge or another supported launcher. Confirm that the launcher is using Minecraft 1.18.2, the required Forge version from that release, and Java 17. A client that is merely “close” to the server version is not compatible: missing-mod, registry, and world-loading errors commonly indicate that the files do not match.
Have players launch the pack once before joining so the launcher finishes downloading libraries and creates its local configuration. Give them the server address and port only after the server has completed startup.
-
Run and monitor the server
For an attended session, the included script can run with its console visible. For a machine that should operate without a graphical desktop, use the pack’s non-graphical or unattended launch option if it provides one. Watch the console for a message that the server has finished loading, and stop it with the console’s normal shutdown command rather than closing the window or powering off the computer.

Managed hosting options
BisectHosting automated installation
The official Vault Hunters CurseForge page identifies BisectHosting as its verified server-hosting partner. It also displays the VaultHunters promotion code; check the current code, price, terms, and regional availability at the time you order because promotions can change.
BisectHosting’s documented Third Edition procedure is:
- Stop the Minecraft server in the hosting control panel.
- Open the Minecraft Tools or Modloader tool.
- Search for
Vault Hunters 3rd Edition
and select the matching pack. - Start the installation and confirm the file-handling option when prompted.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then start the server and watch the console for a completed launch.
BisectHosting states that Vault Hunters Third Edition requires at least 10 GB of RAM to run smoothly. This is the provider’s server guidance; it does not establish a universal amount of RAM per player.
BisectHosting manual installation
Manual installation is useful when you need to preserve a particular server-pack release or inspect the files yourself:
- Download the matching Third Edition server-files ZIP from the official project.
- Stop the hosted server.
- Open the provider’s Files area and upload the ZIP.
- Use the file manager’s unarchive or extract action.
- Configure
server.propertiesand any pack-specific settings. - Start the server and review the console for errors.
The provider notes that the Voice Chat mod is included and must be configured for the server to boot. Complete that configuration before starting, or disable the voice-chat mod if your group does not want voice communication. A server that fails immediately after a manual upload should be checked for this setting before replacing unrelated files.

CurseForge hosted servers
CurseForge also documents a hosted-server flow powered by Shockbyte. When a modpack has a matching server pack, the hosted option can avoid manual file uploads and port forwarding and lets the owner invite friends after creation. Availability and terms depend on the current CurseForge offering, so confirm that the Vault Hunters release you selected has a matching server pack in the creation screen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Network, access, and privacy settings
Use the right address
Give local players the server computer’s private address only when they are on the same network. Remote players need the public address of the home connection plus the configured port, unless a managed host gives you a dedicated hostname. Never publish a private server address in a public channel if you intend to restrict access.
Whitelist the group
A whitelist prevents unknown accounts from joining even if someone discovers the address. Add each friend’s exact Minecraft name, test one invited account, and keep an administrator account available for removing access. Whitelisting does not replace backups or a firewall; it is an additional access control.
Account for changing home addresses
Many residential connections receive a changing public address. Tell friends when it changes, or use a hostname service that you control if your network and ISP permit it. If inbound connections never work despite correct forwarding, ask the ISP whether carrier-grade NAT or an inbound-port restriction is involved; changing Minecraft settings cannot bypass that limitation.
Backups, updates, and routine operation
Back up before every risky change
Stop the server cleanly before copying the world directory. Keep dated backups before updating the modpack, changing Forge, installing or removing mods, or performing large configuration edits. Store at least one copy away from the live server machine. A backup is useful only if you know where it is and can restore it, so periodically verify that the archive opens and contains the world files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpdate server and clients together
When moving to another Vault Hunters release, download that release’s server pack, back up the world, update the server, and then have every player update their client to the same release. Do not let one player join with an older pack while others use the new one. If an update introduces a problem, stop the server and restore the pre-update backup rather than repeatedly launching the changed world.
Watch resource use and logs
Check memory use, disk space, and the server console during the first session after installation. Keep enough free storage for world growth and at least one recent backup. Repeated Java out-of-memory errors, long pauses during exploration, or a server that stops responding are reasons to review the host’s available RAM, view and simulation distances, running applications, and log errors before inviting more players.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Server stops during first launch | EULA not accepted, wrong Java version, or a missing pack-specific configuration. | Read the first error in the console, confirm Java 17 for Third Edition, check eula.txt, and verify that all extracted server files remain together. |
| Client reports missing mods or registry errors | Client and server releases, Minecraft versions, or Forge versions differ. | Compare the exact Vault Hunters release on both sides. Reinstall the matching client profile or server pack rather than copying individual mods. |
| Players on the internet cannot connect | Incorrect address or port, changed local IP, firewall block, failed forwarding, or ISP-level NAT. | Confirm the server is running, reserve the host computer’s local address, match the port in server.properties, allow the server through the firewall, and test from an external network. |
| Players on the same network can join but remote friends cannot | Local routing works, but the public path is not configured. | Review router forwarding and the public address. Check for carrier-grade NAT or an ISP restriction if the rule is correct but remains unreachable. |
| Managed server fails after manual upload | The Voice Chat mod’s required configuration is missing. | Follow the provider’s Voice Chat configuration instructions or disable that mod before starting again. |
| World becomes unstable after an update | The world was changed before a compatible backup was made, or server and client files are mixed. | Stop the server, restore the dated pre-update backup, verify the release on every client, and retry only after the installation is consistent. |
| Frequent memory pressure or long pauses | The server has insufficient available memory or is competing with other applications. | Compare the machine or plan with the provider’s 10 GB Third Edition guidance, close unrelated workloads, review distances, and inspect the console before changing mods. |
Launch-day checklist
- Server pack and every client use the same Vault Hunters release.
- Minecraft 1.18.2 and Java 17 are selected for Third Edition.
- The server has at least the applicable memory recommended for its route; the client and server figures are not interchangeable.
- EULA acceptance is complete and the server reaches a finished startup message.
- World name, difficulty, whitelist, view distance, simulation distance, and port are set while the server is stopped.
- The server computer has a stable local address, and firewall and forwarding rules match the configured port if remote players are joining.
- Every player has launched the matching client profile once.
- A clean backup exists before the first major update or mod change.
- The owner knows how to stop the server cleanly and where the console logs and backups are stored.
