How to Upload Your Website to a Hosting Server (cPanel, FTP, SFTP, and DNS)

A practical guide to uploading website files into the correct document root, choosing between File Manager, FTP/FTPS, SFTP, Web Disk, and Git, connecting DNS, and troubleshooting old pages or failed transfers.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To put a website online, upload its finished files into the domain’s configured document root, then make sure the domain’s DNS points to that hosting account. You need four things: a hosting account, the site files, connection credentials, and the correct document-root path. A static site normally needs an index.html entry file; a transfer can report success yet leave visitors seeing the old site if the files went to the wrong directory or the domain still resolves to another server.

This guide covers cPanel File Manager, FTP or FTPS, SFTP, Web Disk, and Git-based deployment, followed by DNS setup, verification, security practices, and fixes for the failures that most often make a new upload appear to be missing.

What you need before uploading

Prepare the deployment before opening a transfer tool. Doing so prevents a common situation in which files are copied successfully but the public website cannot use them.

  • A hosting account: Confirm that the plan provides at least one enabled file-transfer route, such as File Manager, FTP/FTPS, SFTP, Web Disk, or Git.
  • A finished build: Keep the exact files that belong on the server. For a static website, the top level of the build should contain the entry page, usually index.html, plus its CSS, JavaScript, image, font, and other asset folders.
  • Connection details: Depending on the method, you may need a hostname, username, password or key, and a port. Copy these values from the hosting panel rather than guessing.
  • The document root: This is the directory the web server exposes for a particular domain. On a cPanel main domain it is commonly public_html; cPanel states that files outside the configured root are not visible to site visitors. Namecheap’s FileZilla instructions describe the usual main-domain path as /home/user/public_html.
  • A backup: Save the current live files before replacing them. A backup gives you a rollback if the new upload is incomplete or incompatible.

Find the right document root first

Do not begin by uploading to the first folder you see. Hosting accounts can contain separate roots for a main domain, an addon domain, a subdomain, staging site, or application. The root selected for the domain is the only location that matters for that address.

How to identify it

  1. Sign in to the hosting control panel.
  2. Open the area that lists domains or websites and inspect the configured document-root value. Labels vary by host; look for Document Root, Web Root, or a path associated with the domain.
  3. Write down the complete path exactly as shown. For a cPanel main domain this is often public_html, while an additional domain may have its own subdirectory.
  4. Use that path as the destination in File Manager or as the remote folder in your transfer client.

Upload the contents of your local build into the root, not an extra folder accidentally created around them. If your local folder is named my-site and contains index.html, the normal result is document-root/index.html, not document-root/my-site/index.html, unless the domain was deliberately configured to use that nested directory.

Choose an upload method

These methods are not interchangeable. The host must enable the protocol or interface, and each has a different security and repeatability profile.

Method Where it runs Credentials and connection details Security model Best fit Important limitation
File Manager Browser-based hosting panel Your hosting-panel login or the host’s file-manager session Handled by the host’s HTTPS control panel A one-off upload without installing software Large transfers and repeated deployments can be slower or less convenient than a client
FTP Desktop transfer client Server name, FTP username, password, and port; the default FTP port is 21 but a host may change it Plain FTP can be unencrypted Hosts that support traditional FTP and simple drag-and-drop transfers Do not assume an FTP-only account can be used for SFTP
FTPS Desktop transfer client FTP details plus TLS settings supplied by the host FTP protected with TLS FTP-compatible hosting that offers encrypted transport Some servers require the server hostname for FTP over SSL because FTP does not support Server Name Indication
SFTP SSH-capable transfer client or command line Hostname, SSH port, and password or key as supplied by the host Runs through SSH; it is a separate protocol, not FTP over SSH Secure transfers when the host enables SSH/SFTP An FTP account created only in cPanel’s FTP Accounts cannot authenticate over SFTP because of technical limitations
Web Disk Mounted file access on a supported operating system Web-Disk credentials and server settings from the host Depends on the host’s Web Disk configuration Working with remote files as though they were mounted storage Availability and setup vary by host and operating system
Git Version Control Hosting panel or repository-based workflow Repository and deployment credentials configured by the host Depends on the repository and deployment connection Repeatable deployments from a tracked codebase Only useful when the host provides Git deployment and the project is arranged for it

When several options are available, use File Manager for a quick browser upload, SFTP when secure shell access is enabled, and Git for a repeatable deployment process. cPanel lists File Manager, FTP Accounts, Web Disk, and Git Version Control as supported routes; individual hosts can disable any of them.

Method 1: Upload with cPanel File Manager

File Manager is the simplest route when your host exposes it. It avoids installing a desktop client and lets you confirm the destination directory visually.

  1. Sign in to cPanel and open File Manager.
  2. Navigate to the document root you identified for the domain, commonly public_html for the main domain.
  3. Make a backup of the existing site. You can place the current files in a dated backup folder or download an archive before replacing them; do not delete the only copy until the new version has been checked.
  4. Use File Manager’s Upload control and select the prepared build archive or the files themselves. If you upload an archive, use the panel’s Extract action in the document root.
  5. Check the resulting folder structure. The entry file should be directly under the root, such as public_html/index.html, and asset folders should retain the paths expected by that file.
  6. Open the domain in a private browser window. Confirm the page, images, styles, scripts, and links before removing the backup.

If File Manager rejects an upload because of a browser or size limit, use FTP/FTPS, SFTP, Web Disk, or Git if those methods are enabled on the account.

Method 2: Upload with FTP or FTPS

FTP clients show local files and the remote server side by side. FileZilla is one example of a client that transfers files between a local computer and a web server; other clients use the same basic fields.

Create or obtain a transfer account

  1. In cPanel, open FTP Accounts if your host requires a separate account.
  2. Create a user whose directory is restricted to the site’s document root or the narrowest parent directory that still permits the required deployment.
  3. Record the exact server name, username, password, and port shown by the host. The default FTP port is 21, but the server can use another port.

Do not distribute the primary control-panel password to a collaborator who only needs to upload website files. A restricted FTP or Web Disk account limits the damage a compromised credential can cause.

Connect and transfer

  1. Install and open your FTP client.
  2. Enter the server name, username, password, and port in the client’s connection fields. Select the host’s FTPS or TLS mode when encrypted FTP is offered; do not silently fall back to plain FTP if the account contains sensitive files.
  3. After connecting, open the remote document-root directory. Verify its name against the path recorded in the hosting panel.
  4. On the local side, open the build folder. Select its contents, including index.html and asset directories, rather than uploading an unintended parent folder.
  5. Drag the selection to the remote root and wait for the transfer queue to finish. Review failed or skipped items instead of assuming that a completed connection means every file arrived.
  6. Refresh the remote directory and confirm the entry file and key assets are present. Then test the domain.

If the client cannot connect, re-copy every value from the host. A wrong port is as fatal as a wrong password, and the host may have disabled FTP entirely.

Method 3: Upload with SFTP

SFTP is an SSH-based protocol. cPanel explicitly distinguishes it from FTP over SSH: it is a separate protocol with its own authentication and connection requirements.

Use the account type the host supports

Ask the host which account can log in through SSH/SFTP. An FTP-only account created under cPanel’s FTP Accounts cannot be reused for SFTP because of technical limitations. Use the cPanel or SSH-capable account, an SSH key, or another SFTP credential provided by the host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect securely

  1. Open an SFTP-capable client and choose SFTP, not ordinary FTP.
  2. Enter the supplied hostname, SSH port, username, and password or private-key authentication. Do not substitute the FTP port unless the host explicitly uses the same value.
  3. Navigate to the domain’s document root. The path may be different from the one shown by an FTP account, so confirm it in the hosting panel.
  4. Transfer the build contents, wait for the queue to complete, and inspect the remote directory for index.html and its assets.
  5. Test the live domain and review the client’s transfer log if anything is missing.

When possible, cPanel support recommends SFTP over FTP. If SFTP is unavailable, use the host’s enabled File Manager, FTPS, Web Disk, or Git route rather than trying random ports or credentials.

Web Disk and Git deployment

Web Disk

Web Disk provides mounted access to remote files when the host supports it. Create a separate Web Disk account for a collaborator, install the connection profile supplied by the host, and then copy the build into the same document root used by the other methods. Because availability and setup differ by operating system, follow the host’s profile and certificate instructions exactly.

Git Version Control

Git is useful when the website is maintained in a repository and deployed repeatedly. In cPanel, open Git Version Control when the host provides it, connect the repository using the host’s required credentials, and configure the deployment directory to be the domain’s document root. Confirm that the repository’s deployed output actually contains the public entry file; a source repository that lacks its generated build will not create a working static site merely because the repository cloned successfully.

Connect the domain with DNS

Uploading files does not, by itself, change where a domain goes. The domain’s DNS records must point to the intended hosting service. cPanel directs customers to their registrar or hosting provider for DNS registration and records; where enabled, cPanel’s Zone Editor can manage the records for the domain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the DNS instructions or target values supplied by the hosting provider.
  2. At the registrar or DNS provider, update the domain records to the hosting service’s values. If the domain’s DNS is managed in cPanel, use Zone Editor there.
  3. Save the change and allow DNS caches to expire. During that interval, different networks or browsers can still reach the previous destination.
  4. Once the domain resolves to the hosting account, open it in a private window and verify that the uploaded entry page appears.

If a direct hosting preview address shows the new files but the custom domain shows an old site, the upload is probably complete and the remaining issue is DNS targeting or cached content. If both addresses show the old site, revisit the document root and transfer log.

Verify the deployment

A page that loads is not enough; check the resources the page depends on.

  • Open the domain in a private or incognito window to reduce interference from an existing browser cache.
  • Confirm that the expected page title and visible content are present.
  • Load representative images, stylesheets, scripts, fonts, and internal links.
  • Open the browser’s developer tools and inspect the network or error panel if an asset is missing. A path that works locally can fail after deployment when its case or relative location differs.
  • Compare the live directory with the local build and the transfer client’s failed-file list.
  • Keep the backup until the complete site has passed this check.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

The old website is still showing

  • Wrong document root: The upload may have succeeded in a directory that the domain does not serve. Reopen the domain settings and move the files into the configured root.
  • DNS points elsewhere: Check the registrar or hosting provider’s records and, when available, cPanel Zone Editor. The domain may still target the previous hosting account.
  • Cache: Test in a private window and on another network or device. Cached DNS or browser content can temporarily preserve the old page.
  • Incomplete transfer: Review the client queue and confirm the new entry file’s timestamp or contents.

The domain shows a directory listing, blank page, or default host page

  • Confirm that the entry file is directly inside the document root and is named exactly as expected, usually index.html for a static site.
  • Remove an accidental extra nesting level, such as public_html/my-site/index.html when the domain expects public_html/index.html.
  • Check that the domain is configured for the directory you populated, not for a different subdomain or addon-domain root.

Images, styles, or scripts fail after upload

  • Inspect the browser’s network/errors panel to identify the missing URL.
  • Compare the deployed path with the relative path used in the HTML or CSS. Preserve the build’s folder structure.
  • Check filename spelling and capitalization; a path that matched on a case-insensitive local computer may not match on the server.
  • Confirm that the referenced files were not skipped by the transfer client.

The FTP or FTPS connection is refused

  • Re-enter the server name, username, password, and port copied from the hosting panel.
  • Try the host’s required TLS mode if encrypted FTP is available.
  • Ask whether FTP has been disabled. cPanel notes that a host can turn off FTP; in that case use File Manager, SFTP, Web Disk, or Git instead.
  • If FTP over SSL fails with a certificate or hostname issue, use the server hostname specified by the provider; cPanel notes that FTP does not support Server Name Indication.

SFTP login is rejected

  • Ensure the client is set to SFTP, not FTP or FTPS.
  • Use the SSH port and account supplied for SFTP.
  • Do not use an FTP-only account from cPanel’s FTP Accounts; it cannot authenticate over SFTP.
  • Verify whether the host requires an SSH key instead of a password.

Safer repeatable deployments

Separate access, predictable paths, and recoverable changes matter more than the transfer method’s convenience.

  • Use least privilege: Give collaborators a restricted FTP, FTPS, SFTP, or Web Disk account scoped to the site directory. Keep the primary control-panel login private.
  • Prefer encrypted transport: Use SFTP when enabled, or FTPS with TLS. Plain FTP can expose credentials and file contents.
  • Keep a dated backup: Archive the previous live files before replacement and retain enough history to restore the last working version.
  • Deploy the same build you tested: Do not edit random production files while troubleshooting a failed upload. Correct the local build, then transfer it as a known set.
  • Use Git for recurring work: A host-supported Git deployment gives you a repeatable source and destination instead of relying on manual drag-and-drop each time.
  • Document the destination: Record the domain, document-root path, enabled method, hostname, port, and account owner so the next deployment does not depend on guesswork.

A concise deployment checklist

  1. Build the site and confirm the entry file and relative asset paths.
  2. Back up the current live files.
  3. Identify the domain’s configured document root.
  4. Select File Manager, FTPS, SFTP, Web Disk, or Git according to host support and security needs.
  5. Create a restricted transfer account when another person needs access.
  6. Connect with the exact hostname, credentials, and port supplied by the host.
  7. Copy the build contents into the root and verify that no files failed.
  8. Point the domain’s DNS records to the intended hosting service using the registrar, provider, or cPanel Zone Editor.
  9. Test privately, inspect assets and browser errors, and retain the backup until the site is confirmed.

The essential rule is simple: the public domain serves only the files in its configured document root, and it reaches that root only when DNS points to the correct hosting service. Choose the transfer method your host actually supports, use the matching credentials and port, and verify the complete page rather than trusting a successful connection message.
