To host TWD 2.5 successfully, use the dedicated TWD 2.5 Server Pack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5, run it with the Forge build matched to that release (36.2.31 for the documented file), and keep every player on the identical client pack. Install the server files in a clean directory, accept the Minecraft EULA, configure server.properties, create the world with Biomes O’ Plenty and Apocalypse Cities, then open the server port for outside players.

The cited release is an archived build published March 15, 2022. It is not a generic instruction for newer Minecraft or Forge versions. Pin the exact TWD 2.5 file before you begin, because mixing versions is the most common cause of failed starts and “incompatible mod” disconnects.

CurseForge lists TWD 2.5 as a Minecraft 1.16.5 modpack using Forge. The same project lists a separate TWD 2.5 Server Pack, a Forge distribution of approximately 258.95 MB, dated March 15, 2022. That server archive is the starting point for a dedicated server; a normal client installation is not a substitute.

Keep the server pack’s manifest, overrides, configuration files and other included contents together. Copying a regular client folder can introduce client-only mods, omit server files or leave configuration mismatches that prevent Forge from loading.

Choose where the server will run
You have two practical models. Self-hosting uses a computer you control; managed hosting places the files on a provider’s machine. Decide before installing because storage paths, firewall access and backup procedures differ.

A managed plan removes much of the installation and uptime work, but it does not remove compatibility decisions. Before paying, verify Java runtime support, CPU allocation, storage, player limits, mod-upload permissions, backup export and the ability to pin the archived pack.

1. Freeze the versions
Write down the exact TWD 2.5 file name, Minecraft 1.16.5 and the Forge build shown by that file. Have every player install the same client release. Do not let a launcher silently update one person to another pack revision.
2. Select a machine and storage location
Use a computer that can remain powered on and connected to the internet. Create a new, dedicated directory rather than placing the server inside a client’s .minecraft folder. Leave room for the downloaded archive, Forge libraries, logs, player data, the generated city world and backups. A provider listing for this pack uses 40 GB SSD as a minimum reference; a self-hosted machine should reserve comparable headroom, not merely the archive size.
3. Install a compatible Java runtime
Minecraft’s official server guidance requires a compatible Java runtime for Java Edition. Install a runtime supported by the 1.16.5 Forge build and make sure the account that launches the server can execute it. If multiple Java installations exist, verify which one the Forge launcher or script actually uses. Do not assume that a runtime suitable for a newer Minecraft release is suitable for this archived Forge server.
4. Extract only the server distribution
Download the dedicated TWD 2.5 Server Pack and extract its contents into the empty server directory. Preserve the included folder structure, manifest, overrides and configuration files. Do not drag a complete client profile into the directory, and do not download replacement mods one by one: even a small version difference can produce a registry or handshake mismatch.

5. Keep a pristine copy
Before editing anything, duplicate the extracted directory or store the original archive offline. That gives you a known-good restore point if a configuration change or failed upgrade damages the live installation.
Run Forge and accept the EULA
Start the Forge server launcher supplied by the pack from inside the server directory. On the first run, Forge may create files and stop immediately while it waits for the Minecraft EULA. This is expected behavior, not a crash.
- Launch the supplied Forge server script or launcher from the server directory.
- Wait for the process to create
eula.txtand stop. - Open
eula.txt, read the linked Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance value only if you agree to its terms. - Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Start the same Forge launcher again and watch the console for a successful completion message and a listening server.
Forge documentation describes this first-run pause and the need to edit run/eula.txt (the exact path depends on the supplied launcher layout). If the file keeps reverting or the server cannot read it, check directory permissions and confirm that you edited the file in the directory the launcher is actually using.
Configure server.properties before inviting players
Stop the server cleanly before changing properties, then edit the text file in the server directory. Make a backup of the original file and of the world before experimenting.

Do not edit world-generation settings after the permanent world has been created unless you understand the consequences. A new setting may affect only newly generated chunks, leaving an inconsistent map.
Create the intended apocalypse world
The pack description specifies a particular setup. Perform it during world creation rather than assuming default vanilla generation:

- Start the server and use its normal world-creation process.
- Set the world type or generator to Biomes O’ Plenty.
- Open the Cities control supplied by the pack.
- Choose the Apocalypse city setting.
- Enable cheats during setup, as the pack description directs.
- Confirm the seed and other options, then allow the first generation to finish before several players join.
World generation can be the heaviest part of the first launch. Do not terminate the process simply because the console pauses while chunks or structures are generated. If the server repeatedly exits, preserve the log, check the Java error and verify that the server pack—not a client folder—was installed.
Install the matching client and understand pack-specific behavior
Use the same client release
Every player should install the exact TWD 2.5 client file associated with the server, on Minecraft 1.16.5 with the matching Forge build. A different Forge build, an updated mod or a missing configuration can prevent login even when the Minecraft version appears correct.
OptiFine is required for textures
The creator’s description says the pack requires OptiFine for the zombie and some other textures to work properly. Players who omit it may still reach the server but see broken or missing visual assets. Install the OptiFine version compatible with this 1.16.5 pack and its Forge profile, then test the client in single-player or at the menu before troubleshooting networking.
Nether travel is not vanilla
The description says ordinary Nether portals are not used. Travel is handled through YUNG’S Better Portals, so players should not expect a standard obsidian portal to behave like an unmodified Minecraft world. Explain this before the first session to avoid treating intended pack behavior as a server fault.
Open the server to friends outside your home
Local play and internet play are separate tests. A server can work perfectly on the host computer while remaining unreachable from the public internet.
Allow Java through the host firewall
When the operating system prompts about Java or the Forge process, allow the server on the network profiles you actually use. If you skipped the prompt, create an inbound rule for the port in server.properties. Restrict the rule to the appropriate profile and avoid disabling the entire firewall as a shortcut.

Forward the port on the router
Give the host computer a stable local address, then create a port-forwarding rule from the router’s public interface to that address and the server port. The official Java guidance identifies 25565 as the default port. If you changed server-port, forward the changed value instead. Some internet services use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound forwarding; in that case you need a provider or network arrangement that supplies an externally reachable address.
Share the right address
Players on the same home network connect to the host’s private address and port. Players elsewhere use your public address and the forwarded port. Do not post a private address as if it were public, and do not expose administrative files or the server directory through a file-sharing service.
Test connectivity in layers
- Host test: connect from the computer running the server. This confirms that Forge completed startup and the world loads.
- LAN test: connect from another device on the same router using the host’s private address. Failure here points to the firewall, server binding or local network isolation.
- Outside test: have a friend on a different network connect using the public address and forwarded port. A successful LAN test does not prove this step.
- Version test: if the connection reaches the server but is rejected during login, compare the client’s TWD 2.5 file, Forge build, mod list and configuration with the server pack.
Keep the server console visible during each test. It will show whether a connection arrived, was rejected by the whitelist, failed a mod handshake or never reached the machine at all.

A current TWD 2.5 hosting listing gives a useful baseline of 4,500 MB RAM, four CPU cores at 4.5 GHz and 40 GB SSD. Those figures are provider-specific minimums, not a promised player capacity or a universal requirement. Your workload changes as players generate cities, fight hostile mobs, automate farms and explore different regions at the same time.

Start with moderate view and simulation distances. If tick time rises, reduce those settings before adding memory blindly. Pregenerate terrain only when the pack and your chosen tooling support it; pre-generation can itself create substantial load and storage growth. Increase resources after observing actual usage rather than promising a player count from the baseline alone.
Operate and back up the world
Stop cleanly
Use the server console’s normal stop command and wait for the save to complete before shutting down the computer. Killing the process during a save can corrupt region or player files.
Keep multiple backup locations
Maintain at least one offline copy of the world, plus a recent copy on a different disk or machine. Include the world directory, server.properties, whitelist and ban files, configuration directories and any scripts needed to recreate the server. Test restoring a copy before you rely on it.
Monitor growth and errors
Review tick time, memory use, disk consumption and repeated log errors as the group explores. A sudden increase after entering a new city may indicate generation or entity load rather than a network problem. Record when changes are made so you can revert one setting at a time.

The cited release is from March 2022. Do not replace it with a newer Minecraft, Forge or mod version simply because a launcher offers an update. Back up first, test a copy, and require every player to update together if you decide to move.
Using a managed provider
Some providers advertise one-click installation for TWD 2.5. A typical workflow is to select Minecraft 1.16.5, choose the Forge option, purchase a Minecraft plan and receive a prepared server. Another provider describes selecting the 1.16.5 Forge version at checkout and then receiving a built server. These workflows can remove local Java, router and uptime tasks, but the exact panel and supported files change over time.
Before ordering, obtain written answers to these checks:
- Can the panel install the archived TWD 2.5 Server Pack rather than a similarly named pack?
- Can you select and retain the exact Minecraft 1.16.5 and Forge 36.2.31 combination?
- Which Java runtime is used, and can it be changed if the pack requires it?
- What CPU allocation, RAM limit and SSD quota are guaranteed, not merely advertised as a shared maximum?
- Are backups automatic, how long are they retained, and can you download a complete backup?
- Can you upload, disable or restore compatible mods and configuration files?
- Is there a player limit, and what happens when the server exceeds its resource allocation?
- Can you cancel and export the world without losing access to the files?
Managed hosting is convenient when the owner’s home PC cannot stay online. Self-hosting remains preferable when you need direct file control, custom backups, private network rules or freedom from a recurring host bill.
