How to Host a Minecraft Server for Free 24/7 (What Actually Works in 2026)

Truly unattended 24/7 Minecraft hosting at zero cost usually means running the server yourself. Compare current free-tier limits, then follow the Java setup, networking, security and backup steps in this guide.

The only dependable way to keep a Minecraft server online 24/7 at zero hosting cost is to run it yourself on a computer that stays powered on and connected. Free hosting plans are useful for casual play, but their “always-on” terms usually include sleep mode, timed renewals, advertising, player limits or small RAM allocations. A provider may advertise no-cost hosting, yet still stop the server when nobody is playing or require a periodic action to keep it alive.

This guide explains the trade-offs, compares the free tiers identified for 2026, and gives a practical Java Edition setup for self-hosting. Treat provider specifications as self-reported and re-check their current terms before uploading a world.

What “free 24/7” means in practice

There are three different products often described as free 24/7 Minecraft hosting:

  • Sleep-when-empty hosting: the server is available at no charge, but shuts down after nobody is online and wakes when a player connects.
  • Renewal- or ad-gated hosting: the server runs for a fixed window, then needs a button click, a monthly confirmation or an advertisement view to extend that window.
  • Unmetered hosting with limits: the provider claims continuous uptime but restricts RAM, CPU, storage or the number of players.

None of those guarantees uninterrupted uptime under every condition. If your friends must be able to connect at any hour without a renewal task, your own always-running computer is the clearest zero-dollar route. Its uptime is limited by your electricity, internet connection, maintenance and power outages rather than by a hosting plan.

Free hosting options and their stated limits

The following table summarizes claims found in current provider listings and comparison pages. They are not independent benchmark results, and plans can change or be withdrawn.

Service Advertised free-tier details What it means for 24/7 use
Minehut No payment card, no stated playtime cap Servers sleep when empty and wake when a player joins. Continuous uptime is listed only for its paid Ultimate plan.
FreeGameHost.xyz 4 GB RAM, unlimited players and no sleep mode; ad-funded If the claims remain current, this is closest to always-on hosting, but the specifications are the provider’s own claims and advertising supports the service.
Tick Hosting Up to 8 GB RAM without a card The MC Advanced free listing says renewal is required every six hours, so it is not unattended 24/7 uptime.
OuiHeberg 8 GB RAM and 2 vCores on the free plan The comparison table caps free servers at four players and says the server stays up when activity is confirmed once a month.
Gaming4Free Three hours free, extendable by watching advertisements, up to 24 hours of uptime A timed session can cover a day, but it is not a permanent unattended server.
Minefort Named in 2026 comparison articles; described there as having no timeout The no-timeout description was not independently verified. Check the live plan page and inactivity policy.
ScalaCube Named as a free option in 2026 comparison articles Specific free-tier RAM, player and uptime terms were not established in the available material.
FalixNodes Named as a free option in 2026 comparison articles Specific free-tier RAM, player and uptime terms were not established in the available material.
PlayFreeHost Named as a free option in 2026 comparison articles Specific free-tier RAM, player and uptime terms were not established in the available material.

Free RAM across comparison summaries ranges from about 1.7 GB to 8 GB. That spread matters: a small vanilla world with a few friends can fit in the lower end, while modded servers, large render distances and many simultaneous players need more memory and CPU headroom. “Unlimited players” is a marketing label, not a guarantee that the hardware can support unlimited concurrent play.

Choose between a free provider and self-hosting

Use a provider when convenience matters most

A hosted panel removes operating-system maintenance, port forwarding and most backup scripting. It is the fastest way to give a group a server address. Accept sleep mode if your group can tolerate a short wake-up delay, and accept renewals if someone is willing to perform them on schedule. Ask these questions before creating the server:

  • Does an empty server stop, and after how long?
  • How is it awakened: a player connection, a dashboard button or a queue?
  • Is renewal required every few hours, daily or monthly?
  • What happens to the world if a renewal is missed?
  • How much RAM, storage and CPU time are included?
  • Is there a player cap, and does the provider display advertisements to players?
  • Can you download complete world backups?

Self-host when unattended uptime is the priority

Self-hosting gives you control over the JAR version, Java flags, mods, backups and whitelist. It costs nothing beyond hardware and bandwidth you already have, but the machine must stay on, the network must accept inbound connections, and you become responsible for updates and security. An old desktop or mini-PC can work for a small vanilla world if it has adequate memory and a stable wired connection; the exact capacity depends on simulation distance, mods and player behavior.

Self-host a Java Edition server step by step

The sequence below applies to a standard Java Edition server. Download the current server JAR from the official Minecraft download page; the exact filename and version change over time, so verify them there rather than relying on an old tutorial.

1. Prepare a dedicated folder and Java

  1. Create a folder such as MinecraftServer on a machine that can remain powered on.
  2. Install a Java runtime compatible with the server version. A third-party guide claims the latest release requires Java 25 and that a Java 21 server cannot run on Java 8; treat that as version-specific guidance and follow the requirements published with the JAR you downloaded.
  3. Open a terminal in the folder and verify the runtime with java -version. If the command is not found, install Java or add it to your system PATH before continuing.
  4. Place the server JAR in the folder. Rename it to a simple name such as server.jar so your launch command does not change every update.

2. Run the first launch and accept the EULA

  1. Start the server from the folder with java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui. Adjust memory only after confirming your machine has enough free RAM; do not allocate all system memory to Minecraft.
  2. The first launch creates configuration files, then stops. It also creates eula.txt.
  3. Open eula.txt, read the linked agreement and change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree. The generated file points to the Minecraft EULA at aka.ms/MinecraftEULA.
  4. Run the same launch command again. The world, logs and server properties should now be generated and the console should remain running.

Minecraft server administrators must agree to the EULA before the server can start. The EULA covers server installation and online play and restricts distributing Mojang content without permission. Rules for monetizing a server can change, so read the current text instead of relying on a summary from an older tutorial.

3. Set the basic server properties

Stop the server cleanly by typing stop in its console before editing server.properties. Useful first settings include:

  • motd: the description players see in their multiplayer list.
  • gamemode and difficulty: choose the default play style for new players.
  • view-distance and simulation-distance: lower values reduce CPU and memory demand when the machine struggles.
  • max-players: set a realistic cap instead of leaving a misleadingly high value.
  • white-list=true: restricts access to approved accounts.

One setup guide says new servers have the whitelist enabled by default, but inspect your own server.properties and console output rather than assuming that behavior. Add players from the console with whitelist add PlayerName, then restart or reload as required by your server version.

  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!

4. Make the server reachable from the internet

  1. Give the host computer a stable local address, either with a DHCP reservation in your router or a correctly configured static address.
  2. In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward the Minecraft server port shown in server.properties (the default Java port is commonly 25565) from the internet to that local address. If you changed the port, forward the new value instead.
  3. Allow the Java runtime or selected port through the host operating system’s firewall. Create an inbound rule limited to the required TCP traffic; do not disable the firewall globally.
  4. Find your public IP address and give it to trusted players in the form address:port when a non-default port is used.
  5. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. Testing only from inside your home network can hide router loopback or forwarding problems.

Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound port forwarding. In that case, ask the provider for a public IPv4 address or use a reputable private networking solution; do not expose random administration ports or share router credentials.

5. Keep it running after reboots

A terminal window is not a 24/7 strategy if the machine restarts. Configure the server to launch at boot using your operating system’s service manager or scheduled-task facility, and set it to restart after a crash. Keep the world on local storage, not a removable drive that can disappear during boot. Test a controlled reboot and verify that the process starts, the port is listening and players can reconnect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Back up and update safely

  1. Run save-all from the console, then stop before copying the world folder.
  2. Keep at least one backup on a different disk or computer. A second copy protects against drive failure, corruption and accidental deletion.
  3. Before upgrading the server JAR, duplicate the entire server folder and note the current version. Start the copy first and confirm that the world loads.
  4. Never install an untrusted plugin or mod into a server that holds personal data. Download software from its recognized project source and review requested permissions.

How much hardware does a free server need?

There is no universal player-to-RAM formula. Memory use changes with world size, exploration, entity counts, view distance, plugins or mods and the Java version. Use the advertised free-tier range as a warning about constraints, not as a performance promise.

Scenario Practical approach Watch for
Small vanilla group Start with a modest memory allocation and a low single-digit player cap. Chunk-generation spikes, long pauses and storage growth.
Several friends exploring constantly Prefer a host with more CPU headroom or self-host on a newer machine; pre-generate terrain if your tools support it. High tick times when many new chunks are generated simultaneously.
Modded or plugin-heavy server Do not select a plan solely because it advertises 1.7–2 GB; verify the modpack’s stated requirements and leave memory for the operating system. Out-of-memory crashes, slow startup and incompatible Java versions.
Large public community A free tier is a poor fit unless its player, CPU, storage and acceptable-use terms explicitly support your load. Hidden caps, throttling, abuse suspensions and inadequate backups.

Handling sleep mode, renewals and advertisements

Sleep-when-empty servers

Tell players that the first connection may wake the instance rather than immediately open the world. Avoid automated “keep-alive” bots: they can violate provider rules, waste resources and undermine the purpose of an inactivity policy. If the group needs a world available for spontaneous play, self-hosting is more predictable.

Timed or renewal-based servers

Put the renewal interval on a shared calendar and assign a human owner. Tick Hosting’s listed six-hour renewal and Gaming4Free’s advertised three-hour sessions illustrate why a free server can still require regular attention. A missed renewal may stop the process, make the address unavailable or eventually threaten data retention; download backups before relying on the service.

Ad-funded plans

Advertising can pay for hardware while keeping the price at zero, but it may change the dashboard experience, impose usage rules or disappear if the provider changes its business model. FreeGameHost.xyz states that its no-sleep offer is ad-funded. Treat that as a current provider claim, not a permanent service-level agreement.

Security and privacy checklist

  • Enable the whitelist before sharing the address publicly.
  • Use a strong, unique password for the server panel and your operating-system account.
  • Run the server as a separate, non-administrator operating-system user where practical.
  • Keep Java, the server JAR, plugins and the operating system patched.
  • Expose only the game port; never forward remote-desktop, file-sharing or router-management ports to the internet.
  • Back up before every version or mod change and periodically restore a copy to prove the backups work.
  • Remove inactive operators with deop PlayerName and review the operator list after inviting new players.

Troubleshooting common failures

The server exits immediately

Read the final lines in the console and log file. The usual first checks are the Java version, the JAR filename in your launch command, available memory and whether eula=true is present. Do not repeatedly delete configuration files before making a backup; that can destroy the setting that explains the failure.

Players cannot connect from outside your home

Confirm that the server is listening on the intended port, the firewall rule allows it, the router forwards to the correct local address and you are giving players the current public IP. If your public address changes, use a dynamic-DNS service that you trust. Carrier-grade NAT can make forwarding impossible without help from the internet provider.

The world lags or crashes under load

Lower view and simulation distances, reduce the player cap, stop unnecessary plugins and watch CPU, memory and disk usage while reproducing the problem. More RAM alone will not fix a CPU-bound tick loop, and allocating too much RAM can make garbage-collection pauses worse.

A hosted server vanished or went offline

Check whether it slept, reached a session limit or needed renewal. Review the provider’s dashboard notices and current terms, then restore the latest downloaded world backup to another host if the service no longer meets your needs.

Which route should you choose?

Your priority Best-fit route Reason
No technical setup A sleep-capable hosted free tier Fast deployment, but players must tolerate wake-up delays and policy changes.
Occasional sessions with no budget Timed or ad-funded hosting Works when someone can renew the session and the group accepts advertising.
Unattended 24/7 access Self-hosting on an always-on machine Avoids provider sleep and renewal limits; uptime depends on your hardware and connection.
Modded gameplay or many players Self-hosting with suitable hardware or a paid plan Free tiers commonly cap RAM, CPU, players or storage before the gameplay requirement is met.

For a small private world, begin with a whitelist, conservative settings and frequent backups. If the group outgrows the machine or you cannot maintain security and uptime, move the same world folder to a service whose written limits match your actual player count and resource needs. “Free forever” is not a technical guarantee: providers can alter plans, add renewals or withdraw a tier, while self-hosting trades those policy risks for your own electricity, network and maintenance responsibilities.
