If a YouTube Live archive is already saved on your device, upload it through YouTube Studio and let the transfer run; the time depends mainly on the file size and the upload bandwidth available. If the connection drops, YouTube says to return to youtube.com/upload within 24 hours and select the same file to continue the interrupted upload. First check whether YouTube has already archived the stream, and keep a local recording as a backup.
Check whether YouTube already saved the live stream
Before uploading a replay yourself, open YouTube Studio and check the channel’s Live content for an existing archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on YouTube as the only copy of a long broadcast. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. If you do not have the recording locally, an archive that YouTube did not capture cannot be recreated from the upload workflow. For future broadcasts, record a local copy if you may need the full replay.

- Open YouTube Studio. Sign in to the channel where the replay should appear and select Create, then Upload videos.
- Choose the saved video file. Keep the original recording intact while it uploads. YouTube treats uploading and publishing as separate steps: you can set the video to private or unlisted while it processes or while you choose its publication settings. YouTube Help: Upload YouTube videos – Computer
- Complete the video details and visibility settings. You can publish it after processing or leave it private or unlisted as appropriate. A slow transfer does not require you to change the archive’s live-stream bitrate; that setting applies to sending a broadcast live, not uploading a finished file.
- Keep the upload running when possible. YouTube says transfer time varies with file size, bandwidth, upload traffic and video quality. A higher-quality file, including 4K, takes longer; uploads can take minutes or hours. Its guidance recommends allowing a slow upload to finish rather than treating slowness alone as a failure. Resume an interrupted upload
If the connection fails or you close the upload page, return to youtube.com/upload within 24 hours and choose the same file again. YouTube says this continues from where the upload stopped. The continuation window is 24 hours, not unlimited, so keep the exact source file available and retry within that period. YouTube Help: Video stuck during upload

- Do not rename, move or replace the source file before retrying; select the same file you began uploading.
- If the upload is merely slow, leave it to continue rather than restarting it, which can waste time and bandwidth.
- If the 24-hour window passes or YouTube reports an error, start a fresh upload and consult YouTube’s common uploading errors guidance for the error shown.
Check file size, duration and account limits
YouTube’s stated maximum is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Verified accounts can upload videos longer than 15 minutes, but verification does not remove the maximum size or duration cap. If your file exceeds 256 GB, YouTube suggests H.264 compression to reduce its size; compression can affect image quality, so retain the uncompressed original before making a smaller upload copy. These are separate checks: a file can be under 256 GB but still exceed the duration limit, or fit the duration limit but exceed the size limit. YouTube’s upload limits and interface guidance can change; check its current help pages if a limit or control differs in your account.

What actually makes a slow upload take longer
The archive upload sends the saved file from your device to YouTube. Its duration depends on the file’s size and the connection available during that transfer, along with upload traffic and quality. A live encoder’s bitrate is a different setting: it controls the data sent while broadcasting and does not speed up a later upload of a completed archive.

For a future live stream on a constrained connection, test the connection’s upload capacity and choose a live bitrate it can sustain. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the stream bitrate; interruptions can disrupt the live stream. Lowering the bitrate may help a future broadcast fit a limited connection, but it cannot accelerate an archive that has already been recorded.
