Set omitBackground: true in Playwright’s screenshot options and save the result as PNG. For a whole page, use page.screenshot(); for one element, use its locator’s screenshot() method. The option hides the browser’s default white background, but it does not remove backgrounds explicitly set by the page’s CSS.
Capture a page with a transparent background
After navigating to the page you want to capture, pass omitBackground: true to page.screenshot(). PNG is a straightforward format when you need broadly supported transparency.

Capture one element instead
Use a locator screenshot when you only need a particular element. The locator must resolve to the element you intend to capture.

Use transparency in a Playwright Test screenshot assertion
If you are using Playwright Test’s visual assertions rather than saving a screenshot directly, pass the option to toHaveScreenshot():

What remains visible, and which format to choose
omitBackground hides the browser’s default white background; it is not a command to erase everything behind the page content. A background color or image explicitly applied to body, a container, or the captured element may still appear. If that authored background should be transparent, remove or override it in the page’s CSS before capturing.
- PNG: the straightforward choice for a transparent screenshot.
- WebP: Playwright supports this screenshot type; check that the software receiving the image accepts WebP.
- JPEG: does not support
omitBackground, so do not use it when you need transparency.
Troubleshoot a screenshot that still looks white
- Check the output format. Use PNG, or confirm WebP is accepted downstream. JPEG cannot use
omitBackground. - Check page styling. Inspect the captured page, element, and its containers for CSS background colors or images. The option hides the default white background, not intentionally drawn backgrounds.
- Check how the image is being viewed. Some viewers display transparent pixels against white. Inspect the PNG’s alpha channel or place it over a contrasting background in an image viewer that shows transparency.
- Keep visual-test environments consistent. Operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Keep the environment consistent when creating or comparing screenshot baselines.
