There is no single “1080p YouTube bitrate”: it depends on whether you upload a video for on-demand playback or send a prerecorded file through an encoder as a live stream. For a normal 1080p SDR upload, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps, or 12 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps. For a 1080p live stream, its recommendation depends on codec and frame rate—for H.264, 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps. Those are encoding targets, not India-specific internet-speed requirements.
First, identify which kind of “streaming” you mean
A prerecorded video can reach YouTube by two different workflows, and their bitrate settings are not interchangeable:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Regular upload: You transfer a finished video file to YouTube. The encoding bitrate describes the file; it is not a real-time demand on your internet connection.
- Live stream from a prerecorded video: An encoder plays the file and sends a continuous live feed to YouTube. Use YouTube’s live ingestion settings and make sure your connection can sustain the outgoing stream.
YouTube’s upload guidance says no bitrate limit is required for uploads. Your connection affects how long the file takes to upload, not the file’s target video bitrate. The live-encoder recommendations apply only when sending a real-time stream.

Recommended bitrate for a regular 1080p upload
For 1080p SDR video, YouTube Help recommends these video bitrates. Match the frame rate to the footage rather than changing it just to hit a bitrate target.

| Frame rate | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 24, 25, or 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 48, 50, or 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
Useful upload encoding settings
- Container: MP4
- Video codec: H.264
- Scan: progressive
- Bitrate mode: variable bitrate (VBR)
- Frame rate: keep it consistent with the original recording
- Stereo audio: YouTube recommends 384 kbps; audio bitrate is not tied to video resolution
These are YouTube’s file-encoding recommendations, not a claim that every source needs to be re-encoded. If the file is already encoded well, an additional encode can reduce quality; avoid changing settings without a reason.
Recommended bitrate for a prerecorded file streamed live
If an encoder sends the prerecorded video to YouTube as a live feed, use the live ingestion recommendations. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265, or AV1, and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (not exceeding 4 seconds).

| Codec | 1080p30 | 1080p60 |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Choose the row matching the codec your encoder actually sends. These are YouTube’s recommended live encoder bitrates, not universal minimums for all creators or a special setting for Indian connections.
How much upload speed do you need in India?
For a real-time live stream, compare the encoder’s outgoing bitrate with the stable upload capacity available to the streaming device—not the download figure on a broadband plan or speed-test result. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. As a practical calculation, a 14 Mbps stream calls for about 17.5 Mbps of stable available upload capacity when preserving that headroom; a 17 Mbps stream calls for about 21.25 Mbps. These figures are arithmetic applications of YouTube’s 20% recommendation, not separate YouTube speed tiers.

- 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
- Run a speed test on the same connection and, if possible, in the conditions and time window when you intend to stream.
- Account for other people and devices using the network; shared use reduces the bandwidth available to the encoder.
- Remember that upload capacity may be lower than download capacity.
- If the available upload varies or falls short, lower the live stream’s resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until it is sustainable, or use a more reliable connection.
YouTube Help advises leaving room for bandwidth variation: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Its reviewed guidance gives general network advice, not an India-only bitrate or a profile for particular cities, providers, or mobile networks. Measure the connection you will actually use rather than assuming all Indian internet performs alike.
Do not confuse creator bitrate with viewer speed
YouTube lists approximately 5 Mbps sustained speed for watching 1080p video. That is viewer-side playback guidance, not the bitrate to enter in an upload encoder or live encoder. A creator sending a live feed should follow the live encoder settings above and test the connection’s upload capacity.

Troubleshoot a 1080p live stream that buffers or drops
- The stream disconnects or the encoder reports network congestion: Test stable upload capacity and leave the recommended 20% headroom. Reduce bitrate or output resolution/frame rate if concurrent network use or unstable upload is the cause.
- Download speed looks fast, but the live feed struggles: Check upload performance specifically; upload can be substantially lower than download.
- Wi-Fi interruptions coincide with problems: YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says a hardwired connection may help. Ethernet is optional, not a required bitrate setting.
- The live stream looks worse than the source: Confirm the encoder is using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR mode, and keyframe interval. A bitrate recommendation is not a guarantee of source quality or viewer playback conditions.
- A regular upload takes a long time: That is file-transfer time. It does not mean you need to encode the file at the same rate as your internet connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live around the clock, a home encoder is not the only option. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
