If clips in an OBS playlist appear at different sizes—or a smaller clip sits in the top-left with black space—add OBS’s Scaling/Aspect Ratio filter to the source that plays the playlist and set a common resolution. For a VLC-backed playlist, apply the filter to the VLC Video source. Then choose how to handle any difference in aspect ratio: preserve the full image, crop it to fill, or stretch it (usually not recommended).
Apply a scaling filter to the playlist source
- Confirm which source plays the playlist. For a playlist of local files, use OBS’s VLC Video source. It requires VLC to be installed; if OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. OBS’s built-in Media Source is for individual media files, while VLC Video is the documented playlist option. OBS: Media Sources.
- Open the source’s filters. In OBS, right-click the playlist source in the Sources list and choose Filters. Filters are attached to a source or scene from this menu. OBS: Filters.
- Add the filter. In the Filters window, add the built-in Scaling/Aspect Ratio filter. In its Resolution property, set the common source dimensions or aspect ratio you want. OBS describes this property as setting the source’s new resolution or aspect ratio. OBS: Scaling/Aspect Ratio Filter.
- Set a target that fits your composition. For a 16:9 layout, examples include 1920×1080 or 1280×720. Choose one that matches your scene and planned output; changing dimensions does not add detail that was absent from a lower-resolution original.
- Check representative playlist entries. Preview a large clip, a smaller clip, and clips with different aspect ratios. The filter is intended to normalize the source, but OBS does not guarantee identical behavior for every file, codec, or version.
Choose what happens when aspect ratios differ
Resolution and aspect ratio are related but not interchangeable. A 4:3 or vertical clip can be scaled to a 16:9 target, but the image geometry determines whether you see bars, lose part of the picture, or distort it.

Apply the choice with the filter’s aspect-ratio and scaling controls, then inspect the preview. The right choice depends on the source material: preserving a vertical phone video may leave side space, while filling the frame may cut off meaningful content.

Why changing the canvas or output resolution may not fix it
OBS has two global video dimensions with different purposes. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where you arrange sources; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size used for the stream or recording. If 1080p sources are sent to a 720p output, the output setting controls the final dimensions. Neither setting replaces a per-source filter when individual playlist items appear at inconsistent sizes. Changing the base canvas can require you to reposition or resize scene elements. For YouTube, 16:9 targets such as 1920×1080, 1280×720, and 3840×2160 are examples in OBS’s aspect-ratio guidance; use a target your production and stream settings can support. OBS: Aspect Ratio Guide.
If the picture is the right size but playback is choppy
Choppy playback or encoder overload is a performance issue, not the same problem as a small clip appearing in the corner. OBS recommends lowering output resolution or frame rate to reduce resource use. Lowering the base canvas can make scene management more complicated, so treat that as a separate adjustment rather than the fix for mixed-size playlist items. Troubleshoot when later playlist items still look wrong
- The filter has no effect: make sure it is attached to the source that actually renders the playlist, not a different source or scene. Reopen that source’s Filters window and confirm the Scaling/Aspect Ratio filter is enabled.
- Only the first item looks right: test later items with different dimensions and aspect ratios. The filter’s documented capability does not guarantee every playlist and file behaves identically; confirm your OBS and VLC installations and test before going live.
- The image still has black space: check whether preserving the whole image is selected. Bars can be the expected result when the source and target aspect ratios differ; filling the frame requires cropping or stretching.
- Important content is cut off: switch from crop-to-fill to preserving the complete image, or adjust the framing so the crop avoids the content you need.
- The clip looks distorted: avoid stretching and preserve its aspect ratio instead.
- The image fits but playback stutters: investigate performance separately by reducing output resolution or frame rate, then test the stream again.
