The print stylesheet changes how the page appears in print or PDF; it does not alter the on-screen page.
Add print-specific CSS
You can keep print rules in your main stylesheet or isolate them in a stylesheet that loads only for print. Both approaches apply to PDF output.

Put rules in your existing stylesheet
Use @media print to hide controls that do not belong in the document and adjust the layout for paper. Replace these example selectors with ones that exist on your page:

For a larger print design, create a separate file and link it from the document head with the print media attribute:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="print.css" media="print">Print rules still follow normal CSS specificity and precedence. If a print declaration appears to have no effect, a more specific selector or another competing declaration may be winning. Inspect the computed styles and adjust the selector or rule accordingly. MDN’s printing guide covers print stylesheets and this cascade behavior.
Set the PDF page size and margins
Use @page to specify the paper dimensions, orientation, and margins. For example, this requests portrait A4 pages with 16 mm margins:

}For landscape output, use size: landscape. If sections should start on separate pages, a rule such as break-after: page can request a page break after the relevant element. Page setup does not guarantee that every element will fit as intended: the browser fragments content across page areas, so check the preview. Preview the print rendition in Chrome

Open the page in Chrome and open the browser’s print interface. Menu names and locations can differ by operating system and Chrome version.

Review the print rendition for pagination, margins, clipped or missing content, and headers or footers before saving.

For development, open DevTools and use the Rendering panel’s CSS media emulation setting to select print. You can inspect the print view and edit the CSS without first creating a PDF.

When the layout is right, choose a PDF destination in Chrome’s print interface and save the file.

CSS page setup and browser settings both matter. Preview the actual print rendition rather than assuming that the screen layout will carry over unchanged.

Control printed headers and footers
Chrome can add its own print headers and footers when there is enough margin space, and those can coexist with CSS-generated content in page margins. Turn browser-generated headers and footers off in the print dialog if you do not want them. Zero or very small margins leave no room for that automatic content.
Chrome for Developers says CSS-generated page-margin content is available from Chrome 131, as described in its article published October 30, 2024. This version detail applies to generated margin content, not to basic print styles or @page. Do not assume automatic browser headers will appear uniformly on every page; Chromium’s layout behavior can suppress them on later pages in some circumstances. Read Chrome for Developers’ explanation of print margin content and browser headers.
@page has capabilities beyond basic dimensions and margins, but support for less common descriptors and advanced features can vary. Keep a general Chrome stylesheet to essential page setup unless you have verified the needed behavior in your target Chrome version. MDN’s @page reference documents the rule and its support caveats.

window.print();This opens the print dialog for the current document. If the document is still loading, the browser completes loading before opening the dialog. The call opens the browser’s print flow; the user still chooses the PDF destination and saves the file. See MDN’s Window.print() reference.
Troubleshoot common print CSS problems

A hidden element still prints: check that the selector matches the page and that a more specific rule or competing declaration is not overriding it. Test in print-media emulation.

The PDF has unexpected margins or headers: inspect both
@pageand Chrome’s print settings. Disable browser-generated headers and footers in the print dialog if they are unwanted.The Tool Desk

Content is split awkwardly or clipped: inspect the print preview, adjust the layout and page margins, and use page-break rules where appropriate. Page fragmentation means screen dimensions alone cannot predict the result.

An advanced page feature does not work: support differs for less common paged-media features. Verify that feature in the Chrome build you target and fall back to basic page dimensions and margins if necessary.
