1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you are sending prerecorded footage to YouTube as a live stream, use YouTube’s live-ingestion settings—not its regular video-upload recommendations. At 720p, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, with a two-second keyframe interval and constant bitrate (CBR). The same bitrate recommendations apply to 720p30 and 720p60. If you mean uploading a video file to YouTube Studio instead, the recommended 720p bitrates are 5 Mbps for standard frame rates and 7.5 Mbps for high frame rates.
First, choose the right 720p workflow
“Pre-recorded video” can mean either footage sent through an encoder as a live event or a file uploaded to YouTube Studio. The video may already be recorded in both cases, but the delivery method changes which bitrate guidance applies.

If you are scheduling an event or keeping a channel live with prerecorded footage, the first workflow is the relevant one.

| Live input | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published live-ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection can sustain the stream. The minimum is not the preferred target when your upload connection can reliably support the recommended rate. Allow headroom for network variation rather than planning to use every bit of your measured upload capacity.
The table does not mean 60 fps will improve every prerecorded video. Use the resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source footage; the right choice depends on how it was recorded and how it should appear. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple viewer playback formats, so you do not need to encode every playback resolution yourself. YouTube live encoder settings

Encoder settings for a prerecorded live feed
Configure the encoder as a live stream, then match its output to the source and the selected codec:
- Bitrate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframe interval: Two seconds is recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube lists support up to 60 fps. Keep the output frame rate aligned with the footage rather than increasing it without a source-based reason.
- Video codecs: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 are listed.
- Connection: YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3. For 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC.
YouTube’s advanced settings list square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. For audio, the listed sample rates are 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1; listed bitrates are 128 kbps stereo or 384 kbps 5.1. The page also lists Rec. 709 for SDR and 8-bit SDR / 10-bit HDR. Use settings supported by your encoder and source; do not enable HDR or surround sound unless your content and workflow actually use them. YouTube live encoder settings

Let YouTube detect the stream, or set resolution manually
YouTube recommends automatic detection by default. If you need to select a resolution manually in Live Control Room, its guidance says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings for stream resolution.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create a custom stream key if manual resolution settings are needed.
- Turn on the manual stream-resolution setting and select the resolution that matches the encoder output.
- Enter the stream key in your encoder and configure its output to match the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- Start a test feed before the event and check YouTube’s stream health and messages.
When automatic detection is in use, avoid forcing a manual resolution simply because the source is 720p. Test the actual feed and use the control-room status to confirm what YouTube is receiving. YouTube live encoder settings

If you are uploading a 720p file instead
For a conventional 720p SDR upload, YouTube’s recommendations are different from its live-ingestion targets:

Test before the stream and monitor its health
Use a short test with representative audio and motion before relying on the stream for an event. A static test image may not reveal problems that appear during movement or when audio is active. YouTube’s guidance is explicit: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” During the event, watch stream health and any messages in Live Control Room; a configured bitrate alone cannot confirm that the connection or incoming feed is stable. YouTube live encoder settings
Common 720p configuration problems
- Using upload bitrate guidance for a live encoder: The 5 Mbps and 7.5 Mbps figures are upload recommendations. For a 720p live feed, use the live table’s codec-specific recommendation instead.
- Choosing a bitrate above what the connection can sustain: A bitrate setting cannot compensate for insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity. Reduce the output bitrate or improve the connection, then test again and monitor stream health.
- Unexpected resolution in Live Control Room: YouTube normally detects resolution automatically. If manual selection is required, use a custom stream key and enable manual resolution settings.
- Keyframes spaced too far apart: Set the interval to two seconds where possible and keep it no longer than four seconds.
- Changing the frame rate without regard to the source: YouTube lists identical 720p bitrate targets at 30 and 60 fps, but that does not make frame-rate conversion beneficial. Match the footage unless your production needs another output.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing prerecorded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video on YouTube, not camera broadcasting. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
