Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a large video or an unreliable connection, use the YouTube Data API’s resumable upload protocol: initiate a videos.insert session, save the session URI, and send the video to that URI. If the transfer is interrupted, ask the server how many bytes it received and resume at the next byte. This is a developer procedure for an existing video file—not the ordinary YouTube Studio browser upload flow.
What resumable upload does
Google for Developers describes the protocol this way: “You can upload videos more reliably by using the resumable upload protocol for Google APIs.” Unlike a one-shot transfer, it gives your client a session URI it can use to continue after a network interruption. You can send the media in one request or in chunks; chunking is optional.

The method is videos.insert with uploadType=resumable. Google’s current method reference lists a maximum file size of 256 GB and accepts video/* or application/octet-stream. See Videos: insert | YouTube Data API.
Before you start
- A video file accessible to your client, with its total size and MIME type.
- An authorized YouTube Data API client with permission to upload to the intended channel. The API request must include the appropriate authorization credentials.
- A project whose quota and verification status suit the upload. Unverified API projects created after July 28, 2020 have an important visibility restriction, described below.
- A way to persist the session URI securely until the upload completes or the session expires. Treat it as a sensitive session value; do not expose it in public logs or client-visible pages.
Google’s resumable upload guide is aimed primarily at developers who cannot use Google API client libraries; some libraries already support resumable media upload and retry handling. If your chosen library provides this, prefer its documented implementation over manually reproducing the protocol. See Resumable Uploads | YouTube Data API.

Start a resumable upload session
- Choose the resource parts. Set the
partquery parameter to the video resource parts you intend to set or receive, such as the metadata fields your request needs. The exact value depends on your metadata; it is not a fixed universal list. - Send the initiation request. Make an authenticated POST to
https://www.googleapis.com/upload/youtube/v3/videos?uploadType=resumable&part=.... Include the video resource JSON in the body, withContent-Type: application/json. SetX-Upload-Content-Lengthto the file’s total byte length andX-Upload-Content-Typeto its MIME type. - Save the returned session URI. On successful initiation, Google returns the upload URI in the response’s
Locationheader. Persist it so the same upload can continue after a connection failure. The URI is essential for both transferring media and checking progress.
Keep the total length used in later range requests consistent with the size declared at initiation. Do not begin by uploading the media to the standard YouTube watch or Studio page when implementing this API protocol.
Transfer the video
One media request
For a single transfer, send a PUT request to the saved session URI with the video’s binary bytes. Include a content type matching the media and a content length matching the bytes sent. On completion, the API returns HTTP 201 and the created video resource. A connection failure does not tell you whether none, some, or all of a request reached the server; check the session status before deciding what to send next.

Optional chunked transfer
Chunking can make progress visible and reduce the amount of data that must be retransmitted after an interruption, but each chunk adds a request. Google says chunked uploading is rarely necessary and can have performance implications. Larger chunks generally mean fewer requests and more efficient transfer on a reliable connection; smaller chunks can be useful on an unstable one, but there is no universally best size.

Resume after an interruption
- Query the saved session. Send an empty PUT to the session URI with
Content-Range: bytes */TOTAL_LENGTH, substituting the complete file size in bytes forTOTAL_LENGTH. - Read the response. A
308 Resume Incompleteresponse means the upload is not complete. If the response includes aRangeheader, its ending byte is the last byte the server confirms it received. - Calculate the next offset. Resume from the byte immediately after the reported last byte. For example, if the server says it has received bytes
0-1048575, the next byte is1048576. Use the actual response range rather than assuming a failed request contributed either zero bytes or its entire payload. - Send the remaining data. PUT the remaining file bytes—or the next correctly ranged chunk—to the session URI. Continue querying status and sending data as needed until the server completes the upload.
Do not blindly resend a failed chunk: the server may have accepted part or all of it before the interruption. The status check prevents an incorrect offset or unnecessary retransmission.
Retry server errors and handle expired sessions
Temporary server errors
Google’s protocol guide identifies HTTP 500, 502, 503 and 504 as resumable server errors and recommends exponential backoff: wait progressively longer between retries rather than retrying continuously. If the response contains Retry-After, honor that value. Before resending media after uncertainty about a transfer, query the session status and use the confirmed offset.

Expired session URI
Session URIs have a finite lifetime; they are not permanent upload links. Google recommends starting soon after obtaining one and resuming soon after an interruption. A 404 for an expired session means you must initiate a new session and upload the file again from the beginning. Save the new URI and use it for the new attempt.

Check API visibility and quota limits
Visibility restriction for some API projects
The videos.insert reference warns that videos uploaded by unverified API projects created after July 28, 2020 are restricted to private viewing until the project passes an audit. Do not assume an API upload will immediately be public; check the status of your project and the video’s visibility before promising public availability.

Quota figures can vary by project
The current method reference describes 100 calls per day in the Video Uploads quota bucket. Separately, the YouTube Data API overview lists default allocations of 100 videos.insert calls and 100 search.list calls, plus 10,000 units per day for other endpoints. These are page-specific quota descriptions, not a guarantee that every project has the same allocation: YouTube’s revision history records the start of a move to separate granular buckets for videos.insert and search.list on June 1, 2026. Check the current quota for your own project in Google Cloud Console before building around a daily limit. See the method reference, YouTube Data API overview and revision history.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The initiation request does not return a usable session URI: Check the authorization, endpoint, query parameters, JSON metadata and required upload headers. A successful initiation supplies the URI in
Location; without it, there is no session URI to use for media transfer. - The upload restarts from the wrong point or a chunk is rejected: Query the session status and use the server’s
Rangevalue. Make the next byte the first byte after the confirmed range; for chunked uploads, check that non-final chunks are multiples of 256 KB and the ranges match the actual bytes being sent. - The session returns
404: The URI may have expired. Start a new resumable session and resend the file from the beginning. - The server returns
500,502,503or504: Retry with exponential backoff, honoringRetry-Afterif present. Check the session’s confirmed offset before sending media again. - The video uploads but remains private: Check whether the API project is subject to the post–July 28, 2020 unverified-project restriction and whether it has passed the required audit.
- An upload or related API call hits quota: Inspect the project’s current Cloud Console quota and its granular bucket allocations. Do not rely on an older overview-page figure as a permanent project-wide limit.
Or let it run in the cloud
Resumable upload is for getting an existing video file onto YouTube. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload your recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos, not camera streaming. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
