Why Marathi text can break in a screenshot
Marathi is written in Devanagari. Correct Unicode characters alone do not guarantee a correct image: the chosen font must contain the needed glyphs, and the browser must apply the font’s shaping rules for the script. Noto’s documentation explains that a script font includes glyphs and advanced typographic features that define shaping rules (Noto Fonts documentation). Unicode also describes how Devanagari character sequences map to font glyphs and how fallback works when a complete conjunct is unavailable (Unicode, Devanagari).

- Boxes or missing characters: the rendering environment may lack a font covering those characters, or the page’s font request may have failed.
- Separated or malformed clusters: check whether the selected font and browser combination support the required complex-script shaping.
- The browser looks right but the PNG does not: check whether capture happened before web fonts loaded or whether the screenshot runtime has different fonts available.
Choose and configure a Devanagari font stack
Use a family that covers Devanagari, such as Noto Sans Devanagari, and put it first when Marathi is the page’s main script. Noto recommends ordering CSS families with the most important writing system first. Include a general Noto family for punctuation or digits if needed, then a generic fallback. Browsers try later families when an earlier one lacks a character (Noto Fonts documentation).

}Fallback helps avoid missing-glyph boxes, but it can change the appearance of punctuation, numerals, or mixed-script text. Inspect the actual rendered page rather than assuming that a successful CSS declaration means every character came from the intended family. If you host a web font, make sure its URL is valid and the page is allowed to load it.

Wait for fonts before taking the PNG
Web fonts are downloaded when a reader visits a page, according to Noto’s web-font guidance. In an automated capture, take the screenshot only after the page is ready and the fonts have loaded; otherwise the image may capture a temporary fallback. This is an implementation precaution based on font loading and browser screenshot behavior (Noto Fonts documentation; Playwright screenshots).

Here, document.fonts.ready waits for the document’s font loading set to finish before capture. A timeout is included so a page that never becomes idle does not wait indefinitely; for pages with persistent network traffic, use a more targeted readiness condition rather than relying on network idle alone.
Capture a specific element or viewport
For an element-only PNG, wait for its selector and capture the locator. Omit fullPage when you want the visible viewport rather than the whole document.

Make sure the capture runtime has the font
A local browser, CI container, and hosted browser service may not have identical fonts or browser features. If you rely on an installed font, install it in the exact environment that performs the capture. If you rely on a web font, confirm that the runtime can fetch it and that the request succeeds. Cloudflare Browser Run says screenshots use fonts available in its environment and documents custom-font injection (Cloudflare Browser Run documentation).

When diagnosing a mismatch, compare the live page and the captured image in the same browser environment if possible. That helps distinguish a font or shaping problem from a capture-timing problem or a difference in available resources.

Troubleshoot common Marathi PNG problems
