To upgrade Proton VPN, sign in at account.protonvpn.com, choose Upgrade or Compare all plans on Home, select a paid plan and subscription duration, then complete checkout. If you already pay for Proton VPN, the timing and credit for unused time depend on whether you switch plans or change your billing period.
Upgrade from Proton VPN Free
- Sign in at account.protonvpn.com.
- On Home, select Upgrade or Compare all plans.
- Choose the paid plan and duration you want, then select it.
- Choose an available payment method, enter the requested details, and complete payment.
Review the plan, duration, currency, and total shown at checkout before paying. Proton’s support guidance does not establish one universal price for every account and region. See Proton’s subscription-change guide for the upgrade steps.

Switch from one paid plan to another
- Sign in at account.protonvpn.com.
- On Home, choose Compare all plans. If you have a 12- or 24-month Proton Unlimited subscription, choose Explore group plans instead.
- Select the plan and duration you want.
- Choose a payment method, provide the requested details, and pay.
When you switch to a different paid plan, the new subscription starts immediately. Proton converts unused time on the old subscription into credits and deducts them from the new subscription’s cost. The credit applies to a paid-subscription change; canceling to Proton Free does not produce a credit for unused time. Details are in Proton’s credits and gift cards guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChange the billing period for your current plan
- Sign in to your Proton account.
- Open Subscription → Edit billing cycle.
- Choose a billing period and payment method, enter the requested payment details, and complete checkout.
Proton says the new billing period starts immediately. Remaining time from the previous cycle is converted into credits and deducted from the cost. This differs from choosing a longer duration within the same plan during a plan change: Proton says that new term is scheduled to start when the current plan ends. Check the effective date shown for your change in the account flow.

Check payment methods, currency, and total before paying
Proton lists payment cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Bitcoin, cash, and other methods, but the options displayed can depend on where and how you upgrade. If a method is missing during account creation, Proton suggests creating a free account first, then selecting VPN Plus or Proton Unlimited from account Home to reach the upgrade checkout. The available choices in your own checkout are the ones to rely on. See Proton’s payment methods guide.
You cannot change the currency on an existing subscription. When purchasing a new subscription, switching plans, or changing the billing cycle, you can select a currency at checkout. Proton lists USD, CHF, and EUR as available worldwide; some local currencies are available in some regions. Verify the currency and full amount before confirming payment. See Proton’s currency guidance.
