How to interpret “under $1,000”
This guide treats the limit as the price of a new, unlocked phone before sales tax. A listing that requires a trade-in, new line, financing, or carrier bill credits does not qualify at its advertised net price. Those offers may still be worthwhile, but compare them separately with the phone’s unconditional unlocked price. Apple iPhone 17: the general-purpose iPhone option
Apple lists the iPhone 17 from $899; its U.S. shop page shows a 256GB configuration at $929 with the option to connect to any carrier later. Confirm that the checkout configuration is unlocked and that the displayed price still applies. Apple iPhone 16: consider it if current stock suits you

Google Pixel 10a: value-oriented Android
Tom’s Guide names the Pixel 10a its best phone under $500, while TechRadar identifies it as a value choice. TechRadar lists 128GB and 256GB storage options, a 5,100mAh battery, 48MP main and 13MP ultrawide rear cameras, and a seven-year commitment to OS and security updates. That commitment is model-specific; do not assume it applies to every phone from the same maker. Tom’s Guide measured 15 hours, 16 minutes of battery life in its test, a reviewer result rather than a guarantee of everyday runtime. Samsung Galaxy S25 FE: premium-style features at a lower observed price
iTechGuides reports an observed price range of roughly $600–$700 for the Galaxy S25 FE. It highlights the display, build, battery, 45W charging, and software support, while noting that this model is less suited to demanding gaming and serious zoom photography. That range is not a guaranteed current unlocked price; check the seller, condition, storage, and purchase requirements.

Google Pixel 10 Pro: camera-focused, if the unlocked price qualifies
iTechGuides describes the 128GB unlocked Pixel 10 Pro as a camera candidate when its price is below $1,000, with observed pricing of approximately $915–$1,000. That range touches the budget limit and is not an official live quote. Google confirms the model and its 6.3-inch display, but the available Google Store information does not establish a current price. Samsung Galaxy S26: compact flagship candidate, subject to a price check
iTechGuides advises checking that the Galaxy S26’s unlocked price is below $1,000. The available evidence does not establish that it currently qualifies, so do not assume a carrier offer or approximate listing meets the price rule.

OnePlus 15: do not assume it is a U.S. purchase
iTechGuides gives an approximate starting price of $899 and points to performance and battery life as strengths. TechRadar reports almost 22 hours in its constant-use battery test, but also says the company has pulled out of the U.S. and leaves this model out of its current U.S. picks. That makes U.S. new-device availability and warranty uncertain in the reviewed sources. Confirm both directly before considering it; the test result alone does not make it a straightforward U.S. buy. How to choose among the eligible phones
Start with your platform and devices
If you already depend on Apple or Android devices, services, and accessories, staying on that platform may be more useful than switching for a single phone feature. If you are changing platforms, consider which apps, accessories, and routines will carry over before deciding.

Match the camera to the photos you take
Think about everyday point-and-shoot photos, night scenes, moving subjects, video, ultrawide framing, and optical zoom. A megapixel count alone cannot tell you how well a phone handles those situations. The Pixel 10 Pro is a conditional camera candidate in the available comparisons, but it belongs on a sub-$1,000 shortlist only when its current unlocked price qualifies.
Compare battery claims on equal terms
Battery capacity, such as a stated milliamp-hour figure, is not the same as measured runtime. Reviewer endurance results depend on the test method and should not be read as a promise of how long a phone will last for your use. Among the examples cited above, Tom’s Guide reports a Pixel 10a result, while TechRadar reports a OnePlus 15 constant-use test; they are separate reviewers’ measurements, not a direct head-to-head comparison.
Look at longevity, size, display, and performance
Check the update commitment for the specific model, not just the brand. Then consider physical size, display refresh rate, storage, chip performance, and whether you play demanding games. The available model-level evidence identifies the Pixel 10 Pro as having a 6.3-inch display and the Pixel 10a as offering two storage choices; it does not support a complete, consistent specification ranking across every candidate.

Verify the checkout price before you decide
- Choose the exact model and storage tier you want, and confirm the listing is for a new device.
- Check whether the seller identifies the phone as unlocked and whether the purchase lets you connect it to your carrier later.
- Read the offer terms for required activation, a new line, trade-in, financing, or bill credits. Do not count conditional savings as the unlocked price.
- Confirm the final device price before tax, the seller, stock, and return or warranty terms at checkout. Recheck any prior-generation or U.S.-availability-sensitive candidate before paying.
These checks are especially important for candidates whose available pricing is an observed range or whose eligibility depends on a live price, rather than a clearly stated current unlocked price.
