On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then tap Payment & Shipping. Authenticate if prompted. Tap an existing payment method to edit its billing details, or tap Add Payment Method to add another one. This setting covers Apple Account purchases and services; it does not manage the cards you use with Apple Pay.
Update or add a payment method
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap your name at the top of Settings.
- Tap Payment & Shipping. Sign in or authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID if asked.
- To change a method already on the account, tap it, tap Edit, update the billing information, then tap Done.
- To add a different method, tap Add Payment Method, enter its details, and tap Done.
Apple uses the payment information associated with your Apple Account for media purchases and services. Payment options vary by country or region, so there is no single accepted-method list that applies everywhere. Apple’s payment-method guidance covers those regional differences.

If you can’t edit the current method
Add the replacement first, then return to Payment & Shipping, tap Edit, and remove the old method. If you want to keep using the old method, you can add it back with corrected details. This order avoids removing the existing option before you have added another one.

Payment method declined
Add another payment method and remove the declined one, then try the purchase again. If the new method is also declined, contact the bank or other financial institution that issued it. Apple says it does not have information about why a payment method was declined; the issuer can explain its decision. See Apple’s steps for a declined payment method.

“Billing problem with previous purchase” or “verification required”
These messages can indicate an unpaid previous purchase, not just a typo in the current card details. Follow Apple’s instructions to retry the payment or change the method. In supported countries and regions, you can also redeem an Apple Gift Card or App Store Card for Apple Account credit and apply that credit to the unpaid order. Gift cards are not available everywhere. Apple explains how to resolve an unpaid balance.
Check who pays in Family Sharing
When Purchase Sharing is enabled, the family organizer’s payment method is generally charged for family purchases, unless an adult family member has their own valid payment method. The organizer can add or update the method. If you are not the organizer and a family purchase is blocked, ask the organizer to check the account’s billing. Apple’s Family Sharing billing guidance explains the arrangement.

Changing country or region is a separate process
Updating a card’s billing address does not change the country or region of your Apple Account. A region change has separate requirements: Apple notes that you may need to spend remaining account balance, wait for pending activity or refunds to finish, and address Family Sharing membership. You may also need a valid payment method for the new region, where available. Check Apple’s instructions for changing your account country or region before starting.
Apple Account billing is not Apple Pay
Payment & Shipping manages payment details for Apple Account purchases and services, and can also be used to manage the shipping address associated with Apple Account and Apple Store purchases. It does not change the cards stored for tap-to-pay transactions. To manage those, use Apple’s separate instructions for changing or removing Apple Pay cards.
