To get severe weather alerts on an iPhone, set up Apple Weather notifications for forecast warnings and check Settings > Notifications > Government Alerts for official emergency alerts. These are separate options; availability depends on your location, carrier, and device.
Choose the alert route that fits your needs

You can enable both. Weather alerts are forecast notifications tied to places in the Weather app; Government Alerts are a separate system. Tap More, then Notifications. Allow notifications if iPhone prompts you.

Under Current Location, turn on Severe Weather to receive alerts for your current location.

For a saved place, select it under Your Locations and turn on Severe Weather for that location.

Apple says Weather notifications are not available in all countries or regions. If the Severe Weather option is missing, regional availability may be the reason.
Improve current-location alerts
For more accurate notifications based on your current location, Apple instructs users to open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Weather, select Always, and turn on Precise Location. Location access is a privacy choice: use the setting that fits your needs.

The Weather notification settings also include Next-Hour Precipitation. That is a separate notification option for nearby precipitation, not the Severe Weather setting.

Some versions or regions may show an Emergency Alerts screen with options such as Local Awareness and Always Play Sound. Apple says Always Play Sound can make Emergency Alerts sound even when iPhone is in Silent mode. Labels and controls can differ by region and software version.
Government Alerts are enabled by default on supported devices, according to Apple, and require a SIM or eSIM from a supported carrier. Their availability varies by carrier and iPhone model, and alerts may not work under all conditions. Depending on local rules, some government alerts cannot be turned off. If an alert option is missing or you do not receive alerts

For Weather, confirm that notifications are allowed and that Severe Weather is enabled for the current location or the specific saved place you want.

For current-location Weather notifications, check the Weather location permission and Precise Location setting described above.

For Government Alerts, check whether alert controls appear under Notifications. A missing control or unavailable alert type can reflect regional, carrier, or device support rather than a setting you can add yourself.

Do not treat either iPhone route as a guaranteed warning channel; Apple notes that government alerts may not work under all conditions.
Use more than one way to receive warnings
The National Weather Service advises having multiple ways to receive severe-weather warnings. An iPhone can be one channel; a separate warning method, such as a weather radio, may provide redundancy.
