Change the lid-close action in Control Panel
- Use taskbar Search to find and open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security, then under Power Options, select Choose what the power buttons do.
- If the options are locked, select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- In the When I close the lid row, choose the action for On battery. Choose a separate action for Plugged in if you want different behavior when connected to power.
- Select Save changes.
Microsoft also documents a route through Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings, then Choose what closing the lid does. The wording of Settings labels can vary across Windows documentation and versions; the Control Panel route is the clearest documented path. Microsoft’s shutdown, sleep, and hibernate instructions cover Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Choose an action for each power condition
The battery and plugged-in columns are independent. For example, you can choose Sleep while on battery and Do nothing while plugged in; setting one column does not set the other.

Other choices in the menu depend on the PC’s capabilities. Do not expect every action to appear on every laptop.

Understand the difference between lid closure and idle timers
The lid-close setting takes effect when you close the lid. Screen-off and idle-sleep settings instead specify how long the device waits while inactive. In current Windows 11 guidance, those timers are under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power-settings guidance lists the timeout controls separately from the lid action.
Microsoft’s published adjusted defaults differ by device type; these are timeout values, not lid-close settings or recommendations for every user. The page does not state a publication year for the figures.

Troubleshoot missing options or unexpected behavior
The settings are locked
On the Power Options page, select Change settings that are currently unavailable, make your choices, and save them.

Hibernate is not listed
Hibernate is not available on every PC; Microsoft notes that some devices, including PCs with InstantGo, may not offer it. Check your computer manufacturer’s documentation for model-specific details.

The laptop does not wake the way you expect
Most PCs resume when you press the power button, but some can also wake from a keyboard key, mouse click, or opening the lid. Wake behavior varies by device, so consult the manufacturer’s guidance if the expected method does not work.
A connected device fails after wake
Microsoft suggests disconnecting and reconnecting the peripheral or restarting the PC, and checking that its drivers are current.

The PC does not sleep after inactivity
Check Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Those timers control inactivity behavior, not what happens when you close the lid.
