Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA Windows PC that wakes unexpectedly at night may have an active wake timer, a device allowed to wake it, or—on some Windows 11 PCs—presence sensing enabled. Start with Windows’ own power diagnostics to find clues, then change one implicated setting at a time. These are common categories to check, not a guaranteed ranking or an exhaustive list.
1. An active wake timer or scheduled task
Windows or an application can set a wake timer to resume the PC from sleep or hibernation at a specified time. In Command Prompt opened as an administrator, run:

powercfg /waketimers
If Windows lists a timer, note the process or task it names and investigate that item before disabling anything. The command reports timers that are active at the time you run it; it does not, by itself, prove which event caused a wake that already happened. Microsoft documents the command and explains that an enabled timer can wake a system from sleep or hibernation in its Powercfg command-line options.

The responsible task, if any, depends on the individual PC’s configuration.

2. A keyboard, mouse, or other wake-enabled device
A device configured to wake the computer may be responsible for an overnight resume. To see which devices are currently allowed to wake it, run this in an elevated Command Prompt:
powercfg /devicequery wake_armed
After an unexpected wake, check the last reported wake information with:

These results are diagnostic clues, not infallible proof. If a device is implicated, inspect its wake permission in Device Manager. For a targeted command-line change, first copy the exact device name shown by Windows, then run:
powercfg /devicedisablewake "device name"
Replace device name with the listed name. Disabling wake for a keyboard, mouse, or network device can remove a wake method you rely on, so change only the permission you intend to change. The device’s available wake methods vary by PC: for example, some systems wake on a key press, mouse click, or opening the lid. See Microsoft’s guidance on shutting down, sleeping, or hibernating a PC and consult your PC maker’s documentation for model-specific behavior.

3. Windows 11 presence sensing on supported PCs
Some Windows 11 computers have a presence sensor and can be configured to wake when someone approaches. This is a possible explanation only if the PC has compatible hardware and the feature is enabled; it is not available on every computer.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep.
- If available, find Automatically wake up my device when I approach and review whether it is enabled.
- If the setting is missing, the PC may not support the feature, or the device maker or an organization’s management settings may affect which options appear.
Microsoft also notes that USB-connected sensors on systems using S3 sleep may require USB Wake Support in BIOS. Check the PC maker’s documentation before changing firmware settings. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows 11 presence-sensing settings guide.

How to narrow down the cause
- After an unwanted wake, open Command Prompt as an administrator and run
powercfg /lastwake. Record what Windows reports. - Run
powercfg /waketimersto check for timers that are active now. - Run
powercfg /devicequery wake_armedto list devices currently permitted to wake the PC. - If the PC supports it, inspect the Windows 11 presence-sensing setting.
- Change one setting or permission that matches the evidence, then observe whether the wake recurs before making another change.
A blank or inconclusive result does not rule out a wake cause. Supported sleep states, firmware, hardware, and drivers differ between PCs. For deeper diagnosis, Microsoft’s Powercfg reference also documents powercfg /a, which reports available sleep states, and powercfg /sleepstudy, which creates a power-transition report.

If the priority is preventing overnight battery drain
You can adjust the PC’s sleep timeouts in Windows, but that changes when it sleeps rather than identifying why it woke. Hibernate uses less power than sleep, though resuming takes longer, as Microsoft explains in its power-state guidance.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A PC running Windows 10 continues to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. The support end date does not, by itself, explain a sleep-wake problem. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
