Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUpdate your router using the manufacturer’s instructions for its exact model and hardware revision, then turn off remote administration if you do not need it. Router menus and update methods differ, so there is no safe universal click-by-click path; identify your device first and follow its current support documentation.
Before you update, identify the router
Find the make, exact model, hardware revision, and current firmware version. These details are usually printed on the router label or shown in its administration interface or app. Use them to locate the manufacturer’s support page or manual for that device.

Check the manufacturer’s current firmware release and read its release notes and installation instructions. Firmware updates may address security vulnerabilities; the Federal Trade Commission recommends checking for updates and notes that the manufacturer’s website may provide them (FTC guidance on securing home Wi-Fi; CISA wireless-network guidance).
If the router supports saving a configuration backup, preserve the current settings before updating. The backup method and whether this option is available depend on the device (TP-Link’s general firmware-update guidance).

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Update the firmware using the supported method
Use the update process documented for your router. Depending on the model, it may offer an update check in its local administration interface or app, or require you to download firmware from the manufacturer and upload it through the local interface. For a general overview of these approaches, see TP-Link’s firmware-update guidance and How-To Geek’s overview of router firmware updates.
- Confirm the device match. Make sure the firmware is for the exact model and hardware revision. Do not use a file for a similar-looking router or a different revision.
- Follow the manufacturer’s update steps. Use its built-in updater or manual upload process, whichever it specifies for your device. Do not interrupt the process unless the instructions tell you to.
- Check the result. After the router restarts, sign in again and verify the firmware version. If the update fails or the router behaves unexpectedly, follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions rather than trying firmware intended for another model.
Turn off remote administration you do not use
Remote management can expose router configuration through the internet-facing WAN interface. CISA warns about this risk, and the FTC advises: “If you won’t use remote management, it’s best to disable it” (CISA guidance; FTC guidance).

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Open the router’s local administration interface or app and look for settings with names such as Remote Administration, Remote Management, Remote GUI, or Web Access from WAN. Turn the setting off if you do not need to administer the router from outside your home network. The exact label and location vary by device; use its manual rather than assuming a menu path.

App-based or cloud administration may work differently from a web interface directly exposed on the WAN. Review the router’s documentation and settings to understand which remote-access functions are enabled; do not assume disabling one option necessarily disables every vendor-app feature.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Check remote firmware upgrades separately
Some routers have a distinct Remote Upgrade setting. CISA warns that it may allow the router to listen for firmware-upgrade traffic on the WAN interface and recommends disabling it when present (CISA guidance). Check the device documentation and turn this option off if available and unnecessary. This is separate from keeping firmware current through a supported local or vendor-managed update process.

If you genuinely need to administer the router from outside your home, consult its manual for controls that limit who can connect. Some devices may let you restrict access to specified source IP addresses or networks, but availability varies (How-To Geek’s router administration overview; CISA network-infrastructure device guidance). Use the narrowest trusted access the router supports, rather than enabling unrestricted internet access to its administration interface.
