Transfer your 360-degree camera’s original files to a phone or computer using a route supported by your specific camera, then make and verify a second copy before deleting anything from the camera card. Phone apps, USB, card readers and cloud backup are not interchangeable features across all models, so start with the camera’s current official instructions.
Choose a transfer method your camera supports
The right route depends on the camera model, its storage, and the phone or computer you are transferring to. For example, Insta360 documents app and USB transfer for the X4, while DJI describes app, USB and card-reader options for Osmo 360. These examples are model-specific, not instructions for every 360 camera.

| Method | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Phone app | Transfers footage to a phone through the camera maker’s app. Insta360 says X4 files can be downloaded to a phone for editing or export; DJI says Osmo 360 video can be saved to a smartphone through DJI Mimo. | Confirm the app, connection steps and phone storage requirements for your camera. Insta360 X4 transfer guide; DJI Osmo 360 FAQ. |
| USB to computer | Connects the camera to a Mac or Windows computer to copy files. Insta360’s X4 guide describes selecting USB Drive Mode; DJI documents USB transfer for Osmo 360. | Use the model’s specified cable, connection mode and computer instructions. Insta360 X4 transfer guide; DJI Osmo 360 support. |
| Card reader | Reads footage from a removable memory card. DJI explicitly recommends a reader to export Osmo 360 microSD-card content to a computer or smartphone. | Use this only if your camera stores footage on a removable card. Check that the card reader’s interface works with the destination phone or computer and that the card format is supported. DJI Osmo 360 FAQ. |
| Cloud backup | Stores a copy online when the camera maker or another supported service provides that workflow. Insta360 recommends exporting important media to a phone system album or backing it up to a cloud drive; its Insta360+ setup guide describes manual or automatic backup after account pairing and Wi-Fi setup. | Cloud features and availability depend on product, service and region; do not assume your camera supports them. Insta360 X4 transfer guide; Insta360+ setup guide. |
There is no universal fastest method. Transfer speed depends on the camera, card, cable, reader, computer and connection, so choose based on compatibility and the kind of copy you need rather than an assumed speed ranking.
Copy the original files, not just an edited export
Insta360’s general computer instructions direct users to open the DCIM > Camera01 folder and copy its files. The guide gives .insv and .lrv as examples for certain models; those extensions are not universal to 360 cameras. Keep the originals together and retain them alongside any edited or reframed video you export. Related files may be needed by the camera maker’s editing software.

Back up footage before clearing the camera
- Identify the camera model. Find its current official transfer instructions and confirm which routes and memory cards it supports. Insta360 X4 instructions and DJI Osmo 360 support illustrate why steps should be model-specific.
- Copy the originals to a phone or computer. Use the documented app, USB connection or card-reader route. Avoid moving or renaming related files until you know the camera’s editing software can still locate them.
- Make a separate second copy. Copy the files from the first destination to external storage, or use a cloud service supported by your camera and available to you. The cited camera instructions describe transfer options; keeping another copy is prudent backup practice, not a universal camera feature.
- Verify both copies. Confirm the files are present and open in the relevant camera software or player. A visible filename alone does not establish that the footage is complete.
- Clear the camera card only after verification. When practical, keep the backup separate from the camera so one loss or failure does not affect both.
Check card and reader compatibility before relying on them
If you plan to remove a memory card, confirm that your camera supports removable media and that the card meets its requirements. A reader must also support the card and connect to your destination device. Compatibility varies by camera and phone or computer; the camera maker’s current instructions are the authority. A reader can make copying convenient, but it does not create a second backup unless you copy the files onward to another storage location.

When a transfer or backup does not work
- The camera does not appear on the computer: Check the exact model’s USB instructions, including any required drive mode, cable and computer connection. The documented mode name may differ by model.
- The phone app cannot save the footage: Check that the app is the one specified for the camera, that the devices are connected as instructed, and that the phone has enough available storage.
- A card reader is not recognized: Confirm the camera uses a removable card, the reader supports its format, and the reader’s connector is compatible with the phone or computer.
- An edited export works but the original project does not: Restore the original camera files together and avoid renaming related files. Some editing software relies on the originals rather than the flattened export.
- Cloud backup is unavailable: Cloud workflows are product- and region-dependent. Make a verified local copy on a computer or compatible external storage instead.
