The right tablet for a child depends on more than its age label: weigh the full cost, the case and controls you will need, access to the apps your family uses, and whether the device should also handle school or creative work. Amazon’s newly announced Kids Tablet 8 and Kids Tablet 11 offer a ready-to-use child-focused bundle; an iPad or Android tablet can make more sense when flexibility matters more. Prices and launch details below reflect U.S. information available on October 13, 2026, and should be checked against current local listings.

When a child-focused Amazon bundle makes sense
Amazon Kids Tablet 8: a compact bundle for younger children
Amazon positions the 8.7-inch Kids Tablet 8 for ages 3 and up, at a starting U.S. price of $229.99. The case and one-year Kids+ subscription are included, and parents get a Parent Dashboard and control over Google Play downloads. This reduces the number of separate setup and accessory decisions, but does not remove the need for adults to choose appropriate content and supervise use.
Amazon Kids Tablet 11: more screen for older children
The 11-inch Kids Tablet 11 is positioned for ages 6 and up and starts at $329.99 in the U.S. Its larger display may suit reading, video, or school tasks better than a smaller device, while retaining the same stated bundle: case, one year of Kids+, Parent Dashboard, and parent-managed Google Play access. A larger screen is not automatically easier for a child to hold; consider the tablet’s dimensions and case bulk against the child’s hands and usual setting.

Account for the subscription after year one
Both newly announced Kids Tablets include one year of Kids+. The announcement does not establish the subscription’s renewal price or terms, so check those before treating the bundle as a low-cost long-term option. Compare the cost after the included year with the apps and content your child actually uses.
When a general-purpose tablet is the better fit
Choose an iPad for flexibility across school and home
TechRadar’s October 6, 2026 guide names the 11th-generation iPad its best overall kids tablet, citing its 10.9-inch display, A16 chip, and storage options of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. Its U.S. guide price is $349 (also £329 / AU$599). That editorial recommendation is not a guarantee that it is best for every family: TechRadar also notes the higher cost and recommends adding a case for child use.

The iPad route involves more parent setup than a bundle designed for children. Apple’s Screen Time controls, used with Family Sharing and a child account, can manage apps and websites, communications, content restrictions, approvals, and schedules. Feature availability can vary by region, age, and software version; see Apple’s parental-controls guide.

The OnePlus Pad Go 2 is a $399.99 U.S. / £319 U.K. option in TechRadar’s October 6 guide, with a 12.1-inch display and 128GB or 256GB storage. Its large screen could work well for shared viewing or school tasks, but a large device can be awkward for smaller children. Google Family Link offers screen-time tools, app limits and blocking, content and web controls, and privacy settings. Consult Google’s Family Link documentation and confirm compatibility and setup for the specific device.

Samsung Kids is a different child-oriented software layer for supported Samsung devices. Samsung describes child activities and parent mode for selecting allowed websites; exact features depend on the device and software. Check Samsung Kids information for the model you are considering. Android parental controls are not one uniform system, so compare the actual device and family-account workflow rather than assuming every Android tablet has the same tools.

- Protection: Amazon says its new Kids Tablets ship with a case. For the iPad, budget for a separate case and confirm it fits the exact generation. A case for another iPad model may not fit.
- Content: The Kids Tablets include one year of Kids+; check renewal terms and whether the service has the books, games, and video your child wants. On other tablets, account for paid apps or subscriptions you expect to use.
- Storage: The iPad offers 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB in the cited guide, while the OnePlus Pad Go 2 is listed with 128GB or 256GB. Choose based on offline downloads, school files, and creative projects rather than assuming the least expensive configuration will be enough.
- Extras: Add a stylus or keyboard only if the child will use one for drawing, writing, or schoolwork. The cited sources do not establish accessory prices, so check current prices for the exact model.
- Longer-term use: A tablet that can transition to general family use may justify a higher initial price, but only if the apps, storage, controls, and physical durability meet your needs.
Choose controls around the parent’s workflow
All of these options need adult decisions about access, purchases, and time. The most effective setup is one you can understand and maintain, and features vary by account configuration, country, device, and software version.

- Amazon Fire tablets: Amazon’s U.K. support documentation distinguishes general Parental Controls from a child profile for children under 13. General controls can restrict web browsing, purchases, apps, content types, wireless connectivity, and other features. Amazon cautions that enabling those controls does not remove mature or adult-rated content from every device feature or search result. This is U.K.-specific support guidance; U.S. buyers should check the relevant local instructions and Kids profile workflow at Amazon’s U.K. support page.
- Apple: Screen Time and Family Sharing offer app and website controls, communication management, content restrictions, and schedules. See Apple’s setup guide for the applicable software and region.
- Google: Family Link documents screen-time limits, app limits and blocking, web and content controls, and privacy settings. Read Google’s Family Link documentation and verify the child account and device setup.
- Samsung: Samsung Kids offers a child-oriented environment and parent-selected allowed websites on supported devices. Confirm availability for the exact Samsung tablet and software through Samsung’s product information.
Use age labels as a starting point, not a decision rule
Amazon labels the Kids Tablet 8 for ages 3+ and the Kids Tablet 11 for ages 6+. Those are product-positioning labels, not a substitute for judging a child’s maturity, ability to handle a device, or need for supervision. Think through the practical fit before choosing:
Best Value
- Striking 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display with True Tone - Go far with all-day battery life
- A14 Bionic chip with 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU - Wi-Fi 6 and 5G cellular models available
- 12MP Ultra Wide back camera - Landscape 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage
- iPadOS 16 makes your iPad even more capable with powerful new productivity and collab features
- USB-C connector for charging and accessories - Works with Apple Pencil (1st gen) and Magic Keyboard Folio
- Can the child comfortably hold and carry the tablet with its case?
- Will the device be used independently, shared with siblings, or mostly supervised?
- Do you need a smaller tablet for portability, or a larger display for shared reading and school tasks?
- Which specific apps and services must be available, and can you approve downloads and manage purchases in the way you prefer?
- Would a general-purpose tablet still be useful for school, drawing, or family use as the child grows?
Is the lowest-cost option the right one?
TechRadar’s guide lists the Fire HD 10 (2023) at $139.99 in the U.S. and £149.99 in the U.K., with a 10.1-inch display. It is a lower-cost standard Fire tablet, not the new Kids Tablet 8 or 11 bundle. TechRadar flags Amazon ecosystem dependence and limited game compatibility, so check that the apps your child needs are supported before choosing it on price alone.
Likewise, a tablet’s starting price does not settle the value question. The iPad requires a protective case for child use, while the new Amazon Kids models include a case and a year of Kids+. Compare what you will actually pay for protection, content, storage, and any needed accessories over the period you expect to keep the device.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- Start with the use case. If you want a child-focused device with a case, a content year, and parent-managed setup included, compare the Amazon Kids Tablet 8 and 11. If school, creative apps, or broader general use matter more, consider the iPad or Android path.
- Match screen and size to the child. Compare 8.7, 10.9, 11, and 12.1-inch displays alongside the device and case dimensions; the screen size alone does not show how easy it is to hold.
- Check app access before purchase. Confirm that the school, reading, creative, and entertainment apps you need are available, and understand who can approve downloads and purchases.
- Set up controls before handoff. Use the device’s applicable child account or family controls, review apps and web access, and set the schedules and limits your household intends to use.
- Recalculate local ownership cost. Check current local price and availability, then add the case, likely accessories, and any content subscription after an included period.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
