For a current Restreamer v2 Docker installation, update the image while keeping the same host directories mounted to /core/config and /core/data. Back up the configuration first, recreate the container with its existing Docker settings, then verify the YouTube destination in Restreamer before going live. Older v0.6.x installations need a different migration path through v0.6.8.
Before you update: identify the version and preserve the deployment
Restreamer’s update guidance says to pull the current Docker image and restart using the usual Docker invocation for the installation. Before doing that, record the installed version and retain the actual docker run command or Compose configuration, including port mappings, environment values, image variant, and host paths. The documented update assumes the existing invocation; replacing it with a generic example can change deployment settings. Restreamer’s update guide recommends using the latest datarhei Restreamer.

Back up the persistent state
For current v2 installations, the persistent configuration/state is mounted at /core/config, and persistent internal files are mounted at /core/data. Make a separate copy of the host directory mapped to /core/config before replacing the container; consider copying the /core/data host directory too. Restreamer also provides database export in System settings’ expert mode. An export is a useful additional copy, not a substitute for preserving the correct mounted host paths. The migration guide and Docker installation documentation describe these paths and the export context.

- Check your current configuration. Confirm the image name and variant, host directories, ports, and environment settings from the running deployment. If you use a CUDA image variant or custom port mapping, preserve that choice.
- Make the backup. Copy the host directory mounted to
/core/configto a separate location. Back up the/core/datadirectory as well if it contains files you need, and export the database from expert mode if available. - Pull the image. Pull the desired current Restreamer image using the image name and variant for your installation. The official update instructions call for pulling the current Docker image before restarting; they do not imply that you should change your port or mount configuration.
- Recreate or restart using the same deployment settings. Keep the existing host-to-container mounts for
/core/configand/core/data, along with the same ports, environment, and other installation-specific options. Make sure those mounts point to the original host paths rather than newly created empty directories. See the official Docker setup instructions if you need to check the documented paths. - Verify the configuration before broadcasting. Open Restreamer and check the saved stream and YouTube destination settings. Confirm the destination in YouTube as well, then start the next broadcast only after the settings are correct. The official materials describe update and migration behavior, but do not promise that every YouTube credential or destination setting survives every version transition and installation method.
Moving an older v0.6.x installation to v2
Do not use the short v2 update procedure as a substitute for migrating a legacy v0.6.x installation. Restreamer’s migration guide says to upgrade through v0.6.8 first; it warns that skipping v0.6.8 may result in lost settings. Follow that guide for your installation and adapt its example paths to the actual host directories in your deployment.

- Upgrade the legacy installation to v0.6.8. Start v0.6.8 and stream from the video source as directed by the migration guide before proceeding.
- Stop and remove the v0.6.8 container. Keep the host data directory in place; removing a container is not the same as deleting its mounted host data.
- Pull the v2 image and update the mounts. The guide changes the configuration mount from
/restreamer/dbto/core/configand adds a persistent/core/datamount. Its example changes/mnt/restreamer/db:/restreamer/dbto/mnt/restreamer/db:/core/configand adds/opt/restreamer/data:/core/data. Treat these as documented examples, not universal host paths. - Start v2 and inspect the imported configuration. The guide says the first v2 startup imports settings and creates
db.jsonandconfig.jsonin the mounted configuration directory. It also says legacyRS_environment values are transferred on first v2 startup and may then be removed. - Check YouTube settings before going live. Confirm that the destination and stream settings are present and correct in Restreamer and YouTube. Do not infer from a successful import that every saved credential is guaranteed to remain valid.
Use the exact sequence and version notes in Restreamer’s migration documentation; migration behavior and paths differ from a routine update of an existing v2 container.
Rollback is limited, not a general undo button
The migration guide gives a narrow downgrade caveat for Restreamer 2.4.0 and later: it says FFmpeg 5.1.2 is incompatible with earlier versions and describes a route to versions 2.3.x or earlier involving database-file renaming and an older image. It also warns that processes created with 2.4.0 or newer cannot be restored by that route. Do not treat those instructions as a guaranteed rollback recipe for every installation; consult the guide and keep a backup before changing versions. See the version-specific migration and downgrade instructions.

Troubleshooting after the update
- Restreamer appears to have lost its settings: Check that the container still mounts the original host directory to
/core/config. A new or empty host directory will not contain the existing configuration. For a v0.6.x migration, check that you followed the v0.6.8 bridge and changed the configuration mount as the migration guide specifies. - Files or persistent data are missing: Confirm the original host path is mounted to
/core/dataas well as the configuration path. Compare the active Docker configuration with the one saved before the update. - The container will not start or the image behaves differently: Check that you pulled the intended image variant and preserved the installation’s ports and environment settings. Avoid substituting a generic command that omits custom options.
- The stream destination is present but YouTube does not accept the stream: Recheck the destination configuration and stream settings in Restreamer and YouTube before broadcasting. The official update pages do not establish a universal guarantee for YouTube credential retention, so verify rather than assuming the credential remains usable.
- You are trying to downgrade from 2.4.0 or later: Stop before applying an older image as if it were a routine rollback. Follow the documented version-specific procedure and heed its warning that processes created with 2.4.0+ cannot be restored through that route.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than maintain a self-hosted Restreamer installation, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
