Use your platform’s built-in update command first. On PC, open Epic Games Launcher and start Fortnite; an available update should begin automatically. On PlayStation, go to Library, highlight Fortnite, press Options, and select Check for Update. On Xbox, open My Games & Apps > See All > Games, highlight Fortnite, and choose Update if it is offered. On Nintendo Switch, connect to the internet, highlight Fortnite on the HOME menu, press + or −, then choose Software Update > Via the Internet.
If a season download is stuck, close Fortnite, check Epic’s server status, restart your modem or router, retry over a stable connection (preferably wired LAN on PlayStation), install pending system updates, clear the platform cache, and power-cycle the console. Reinstall Fortnite only after those lower-impact steps fail.

Start with the correct update command
Fortnite does not use one universal update button. The launcher or console operating system controls the download, so the first step depends on where you play. Use the platform path below before changing network settings or deleting the game.

A download that is still moving is usually working, even if the percentage appears unchanged for a while. A genuinely stuck download repeatedly shows the same state, returns to the same prompt after a restart, or remains on a message such as “Checking for Updates” while the network and console are otherwise usable.

Before troubleshooting, identify what is actually stuck
An update has not been offered
If you can launch Fortnite normally and no update is offered, the platform may already have the current build, or the rollout may not yet be available to your account or region. Run the platform-specific check once, then restart the launcher or console before trying again. Do not delete the game merely because the update button is absent.
The download is paused
A paused download is different from a failed one. Nintendo specifically notes that software downloads may pause while a game is being played. On Switch, close Fortnite completely from the HOME menu, leave the console connected to the internet, and retry the update. On other platforms, close the game before testing the download so the system is not dividing resources between gameplay and installation.
The status says “Checking for Updates”
Epic says a PlayStation stall at “Checking for Updates” can result from communication problems between the console and Epic’s servers. Treat this as a connectivity or service-status problem first, not as proof that the installation is corrupt.

The percentage or remaining time never changes
First verify that the console or launcher still reports network activity. If the number remains unchanged after closing the game and restarting the download, move through the sequence below in order. Each step is reversible and avoids the time and bandwidth cost of a reinstall.
Run this stuck-download sequence in order
- Check Epic’s server status. A season launch can coincide with heavy demand or a service-side problem. If Epic is reporting an incident affecting Fortnite or account services, wait for service recovery before changing local files. A local reinstall cannot repair an outage.
- Close Fortnite and restart the download. Exit to the platform dashboard, confirm that the game is no longer running in the foreground, and reopen the update screen. On Switch, this step is especially important because an active game can pause software downloads.
- Restart the modem or router. Turn off the networking equipment, allow it to finish shutting down, then turn it back on and wait until the internet connection is restored. Reconnect the console or relaunch the PC updater before testing Fortnite again.
- Test the connection. Use the platform’s built-in network test or the launcher’s connection behavior to confirm that the device is online. If other devices also lose access, fix the home network first. Avoid repeatedly cancelling a download while the connection is unstable; each retry can restart verification work.
- Prefer wired LAN when available. Epic’s PlayStation guidance strongly recommends a wired connection for this problem. Connect the console directly to the router with Ethernet, such as a Cat 6 cable, then retry. Wired LAN removes Wi‑Fi interference and signal-strength changes from the diagnosis; it does not bypass an Epic service outage.
- Install pending platform system updates. Check the console or operating system for its own updates, install them, and restart. A game update can fail when the platform software is waiting for a required system update or has not completed a reboot.
- Clear the platform cache. Epic’s console troubleshooting sequence includes clearing cache, and Nintendo documents cache reset for Switch Fortnite problems. Cache clearing removes temporary platform data; it does not replace the game’s saved progress. Use the console’s built-in cache procedure rather than deleting random folders or saved data.
- Power-cycle or restart the platform. Shut down the console fully, wait briefly, start it again, and retry the update. On PC, restart Windows or macOS after completely exiting Epic Games Launcher. A full restart can release a locked updater process that a simple return to the dashboard leaves running.
- Reinstall only if the update is still broken. Delete Fortnite through the platform’s normal game-management controls, then download it again from your library or the platform store. Reinstallation is an escalation step because it requires the full game download and any current season data again.
- Contact the platform manufacturer if a console still fails. Epic’s sequence directs console players to contact the platform manufacturer after the server, network, update, cache, restart, and reinstall checks have been completed. Have the console model, system version, exact error text, and the steps already attempted ready for support.
How to update Fortnite on PC
Normal update
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Start Fortnite from the launcher library.
- If a newer build is available, let the launcher begin the update automatically.
- Leave the launcher open until download and installation finish, then launch the game again.
The launcher is the update mechanism on PC. Starting Fortnite through an unrelated desktop shortcut does not provide a separate update path; the launcher must be able to contact its services and write the installation files.
If the launcher does not start the update
- Exit Fortnite.
- Fully exit Epic Games Launcher rather than only closing its window. Reopen it from the operating system and start Fortnite again.
- Verify that the computer has a working internet connection. If browsing and other online applications also fail, restart the modem or router before retrying.
- Restart the computer and repeat the launch. This clears a launcher process that may have remained in memory after a failed attempt.
If the launcher repeatedly returns to the same update prompt after these restarts, record the exact message and whether the download reaches a particular percentage. That information distinguishes a service or network problem from a damaged local installation when you contact support.

How to update Fortnite on PlayStation
Manual update check
- Open the PlayStation Library.
- Highlight Fortnite.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Check for Update.
When the console finds a newer build, follow the on-screen download and installation prompts. Keep Fortnite closed while the update runs so the console can complete the download and file check without the game in the foreground.
Fix “Checking for Updates”
Epic identifies server communication as one possible cause of this PlayStation stall. Check Epic’s server status first. If services are operating normally, continue with local checks:
- Restart the modem or router.
- Review the PlayStation network settings and run the console’s connection test.
- Use wired LAN if possible; Epic specifically recommends a wired connection for this issue.
- Install any pending PlayStation system update and restart.
- Clear the console cache using its built-in troubleshooting procedure.
- Power-cycle the PlayStation and run Check for Update again.
- Use the console’s restore-licenses option if the update remains stuck after the network and cache steps.
Restore licenses is a local account-and-content check; it does not substitute for a server-status check. If the same stall returns after the complete sequence, reinstall Fortnite, then contact PlayStation support if the new installation cannot update.

How to update Fortnite on Xbox
Manual update check
- Open My Games & Apps.
- Select See All.
- Open Games.
- Highlight Fortnite.
- Choose Update when that option is offered.
If Update is not shown, the Xbox may already have the current version. Close the game, restart the console, and check the same menu again before treating the absence of the button as an error.
When the Xbox download stalls
Use the general console sequence: check for an Xbox system update, clear the console cache, and power-cycle the hardware. Restart the modem or router as part of the network check, then retry the update with Fortnite closed. If the download still fails after those steps, reinstall the game through Xbox’s normal uninstall and library-download controls. Reinstalling should be the last local step because it removes the existing installation and requires a complete redownload.

Manual update check
- Connect the Switch to the internet.
- On the HOME menu, highlight Fortnite.
- Press the + or − button.
- Select Software Update.
- Choose Via the Internet.
Keep the Switch connected until the check and download finish. If the system reports that no update is available, restart the console and repeat the check once rather than deleting the software immediately.

Fix a paused or stuck Switch download
- Close Fortnite completely. Nintendo notes that a software download may pause while the software is being played.
- Confirm that the Switch remains connected to the internet.
- Clear the Switch cache using the system’s documented cache-reset option. This targets temporary data and is different from deleting save data.
- Restart the Switch, then run Software Update > Via the Internet again.
- If the update remains damaged, delete and redownload Fortnite through the Switch software-management controls.
Do not assume that a paused download is a corrupted installation. Closing the game and restarting the console resolves the less serious case without forcing a complete redownload.

When reinstalling is justified
Reinstall only after checking service status, closing Fortnite, restarting the network, testing the connection, installing platform updates, clearing cache, and restarting the device. Those steps address the common causes Epic and Nintendo identify: server communication, router conditions, paused downloads, stale cache data, and a platform process that needs a full restart.
Use the platform’s standard delete or uninstall control for Fortnite, then download the game again from your existing library or store account. The exact menu wording can vary with console system software, so choose the entry that removes the installed game rather than saved data. Expect a full game download and allow additional time for the current season files to install before launching.

If a reinstall fails in the same way, stop repeating it. Record the platform, network type (Wi‑Fi or wired), the exact screen or error, whether Epic’s status page showed an incident, and which cache and restart steps worked. Give that information to the platform manufacturer for console-specific support.
Prevent the next season update from stalling
- Start the update from the platform path instead of waiting for an in-game prompt.
- Close Fortnite before beginning a large download, especially on Nintendo Switch.
- Keep the console or PC connected to a reliable network throughout the download.
- Use wired LAN on PlayStation when practical, as Epic’s guidance favors it for “Checking for Updates” problems.
- Install pending platform system updates before a major Fortnite season rollout.
- If an update appears frozen, check service status before deleting the game.
- Reserve reinstalling for a damaged installation that survives the network, cache, and restart checks.
What the troubleshooting order tells you
The order is deliberate. Server-status checks cost nothing and identify problems a local fix cannot solve. Closing the game and restarting the router address paused downloads and ordinary connectivity faults. Wired LAN, system updates, cache clearing, and a full power-cycle then remove common platform-side variables. Reinstalling comes last because it consumes the most time and bandwidth while providing no benefit during an Epic service outage. Following that order gives you the fastest path from a simple pause to a genuine installation repair without losing the evidence needed for support.
