Start the official FINAL FANTASY XIV client for the platform linked to your service account. Once Square Enix makes the new build available, the launcher or console client downloads and installs it automatically. Windows and Steam require the matching PC edition; PS5 and Xbox use their platform distribution channels. If the update does not begin, check the current Lodestone maintenance notice and World status before troubleshooting your connection or device.
What normally happens when maintenance ends
FINAL FANTASY XIV does not use a separate manual patch file for ordinary post-maintenance updates. Launch the installed client after the maintenance window, sign in where prompted, and leave the update screen open while the new build downloads and installs. The Lodestone notice for Oct. 13, 2026 states: “Game clients will update automatically upon launch.”

That statement applies after the build for your platform is available. Square Enix can release platforms in separate stages, so one device may begin updating while another still reports maintenance. A finished maintenance window does not guarantee that every platform has received the build at exactly the same moment.

- Use the client edition associated with the service account in Mog Station.
- Keep the device connected to a stable internet connection and leave sufficient storage space for the patch and temporary installation files.
- Check the latest Lodestone notice and the World status page if the launcher still says maintenance.
- Do not uninstall the game simply because the first launch does not immediately show a download; use the platform-specific recovery steps below.
Before you start: identify your edition and rollout status
Confirm the PC account relationship
On PC, Windows and Steam are separate FINAL FANTASY XIV editions. The service account must have the corresponding platform license. A Windows account is not interchangeable with a Steam client, and a Steam account should not be started with the ordinary Windows launcher. Square Enix warns that using an incorrectly matched client can produce an inactive-subscription message even when the subscription itself is active.

If you are unsure which edition you own, check the platform registered in Mog Station before changing launchers. Switching clients casually can create an account or license mismatch that looks like a billing problem but is actually an edition-selection problem.
Check whether your platform is in the rollout
Read the newest maintenance notice on FINAL FANTASY XIV The Lodestone. The Oct. 13, 2026 notice listed PS5 and Xbox first, followed by PS4, and then Windows, Mac, and Steam at separate times. The notice is therefore the authority for the current release sequence; do not infer that a delay on one platform means the whole service is still offline.
Prepare the connection and device
- Pause other large downloads or streams that compete with the game update.
- Use a wired connection where practical, or move the console or PC closer to the wireless access point.
- Make sure the operating system and the game device have completed any pending restart.
- Keep the launcher open until installation finishes; closing it can leave the update incomplete.
Windows PC: update with the official Windows launcher
Step-by-step
- Verify in Mog Station that your service account uses the Windows edition rather than Steam.
- Open the official FINAL FANTASY XIV Windows launcher after the announced maintenance period.
- Sign in with the account connected to your service account.
- Wait for the launcher to detect the new build. Allow it to download and install the update without closing the launcher or putting the computer to sleep.
- When the launcher presents the normal Play or Log In control, start the game and confirm that your character-selection screen loads.
If the Windows launcher still shows maintenance
First compare the message with the latest Lodestone notice and World status. The Windows/Mac/Steam rollout may simply be scheduled later than the console rollout. If the official status shows no ongoing maintenance or incident, restart the launcher and try again after confirming that your connection is working.

If Windows reports an inactive subscription
Do not immediately repurchase game time. Close the launcher, confirm the edition recorded in Mog Station, and reopen the matching Windows client. An account that is licensed for Steam can display a misleading inactive-subscription message when started through the Windows launcher, and the reverse mismatch can cause the same kind of failure.
Windows update hygiene
- Run the launcher from the same Windows installation that normally starts your game.
- Do not copy a Steam installation into the Windows launcher directory or attempt to force one edition to update the other.
- If the download repeatedly stops, note the exact text or code shown before contacting support; a screenshot can help support distinguish an account mismatch from a network failure.
Steam: update the Steam edition, not the Windows edition
Step-by-step
- Open the Steam client and sign in to the account that owns FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- Start the game from your Steam library. Steam and the game launcher may both display progress; allow both stages to complete.
- Leave Steam running while the client downloads and applies the new build.
- Launch the game after the update finishes and verify that the Steam edition reaches the normal login screen.
Steam is a distinct PC platform for account-license purposes. If you normally use Steam, do not substitute the standalone Windows launcher just because it appears to offer the same game. Square Enix’s account check is tied to the registered platform, not merely to the game name or the folder containing the files.
When Steam says the game is current but FFXIV is not
Exit and reopen Steam so it refreshes the depot and queued update information, then start FINAL FANTASY XIV again. If the Lodestone notice shows that Steam is in a later rollout stage, wait for that stage rather than deleting the installation. If the client still cannot update after the platform is live, record the displayed error and proceed to the connection checks in the troubleshooting section.

PS5: complete the update through the console
Step-by-step
- Start the PS5 after the maintenance window and open the installed FINAL FANTASY XIV client.
- Allow the update to download and install before attempting to enter the game.
- Keep the PS5 powered on and connected until the installation completes.
- If the update fails, open the PS5 network settings and run the console’s internet-connection test.
- Install the latest PS5 system software, restart the console, and retry the FINAL FANTASY XIV update.
If the download is unstable
Restart the router or modem, then retry the download. Square Enix’s PS5/PS4 disconnection guidance also recommends checking router security settings and required ports when a network device is blocking the game’s traffic. If PS5 reports an error after maintenance

Xbox Series X|S: use the installed Xbox client
Step-by-step
- Start the Xbox Series X or Series S after maintenance and launch the installed FINAL FANTASY XIV client.
- Allow the automatic update to finish before signing in to play.
- Keep the console online and powered on while the update is being applied.
- If the client is missing or must be reinstalled, open the Microsoft Store and download the client through the official Xbox distribution channel documented by Square Enix.
If Xbox does not offer the update
Confirm that the current Lodestone notice has reached the Xbox rollout stage, then restart the console and check the Microsoft Store again. The official material does not publish a separate Xbox error-code procedure. Use the general service-status and connection checks: verify that other online services work, restart the network equipment if needed, and contact Square Enix Support with the exact message or code if the client remains unavailable.

Fixes for common “stuck after maintenance” symptoms
The launcher says maintenance is over, but I cannot play
“Maintenance is over” can describe the service generally while your platform is still waiting for its scheduled rollout. Recheck the latest notice for platform-specific times. If your platform is listed as available, close and relaunch the correct client, then verify that the device has internet access. On PC, confirm Windows versus Steam before attempting account troubleshooting.
The patch does not start downloading
- Confirm the platform is included in the currently released rollout.
- Check that another application can reach the internet.
- Restart the launcher or console.
- Restart the router or modem if the connection is unstable.
- Retry with other downloads paused.
- Record the exact error if the update still will not begin.
No authoritative universal patch-size or download-time figure is published in the cited official notices. The amount of data and elapsed time vary by update, platform, available storage, and connection quality, so an apparently long download is not by itself proof that the client is broken.

Keep the device online and retry after a full launcher or console restart. On PS5, run the network test, apply system software updates, and restart the router or modem. On Windows or Steam, first make sure you are using the edition that matches Mog Station; a platform mismatch can prevent a valid login even when files appear to be present.

The client was deleted or is missing
Reinstall only through the official platform channel. For Xbox, Square Enix specifically directs players to the Microsoft Store to download the client directly. Use the official Windows launcher for the Windows edition, Steam for the Steam edition, and the PlayStation distribution path for PS5. Installing from an unrelated package or mixing editions can reproduce the same account and update errors.
Another player can log in, but I cannot
Compare the platform and rollout stage rather than assuming the service is fully unavailable. Different platforms can receive the build at different times. Once your platform is live, check your network, restart the client, and verify the edition or console installation tied to your service account.

For PS5, Square Enix specifically asks players to escalate with the exact error code when the update continues to fail. For Xbox, where a separate error-code workflow is not published, the same precise information gives support the necessary starting point.

- Check World status and confirm that your platform’s rollout has begun.

What you do not need to do
You do not need a universal patch-size estimate, special networking hardware, or a manually sourced patch file to perform the normal update. The official process is a client launch followed by an automatic download when the platform build is available. Optional networking equipment may affect connection quality, but it is not required by Square Enix’s update instructions.
