Update a browser only through its built-in Help or About screen, its official app store, or the operating system’s own update service. Once the update downloads, restart the browser or device if prompted, then check the update screen again. Avoid update links in unsolicited pop-ups or unfamiliar download sites.
Choose the update route that owns your browser
The correct method depends on the browser and device. Desktop Chrome, Firefox, and Edge can check for updates inside the browser. Chrome on a phone or tablet updates through its app store, while Safari updates with Apple’s operating-system software.

Update Chrome
On a Windows or Mac computer
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for an update and displays the installed version.
- If Relaunch appears, select it to finish applying the update. Chrome says normal tabs and windows are restored after relaunch; Incognito windows do not reopen.
Chrome ordinarily downloads updates in the background and applies them after the browser closes and reopens. The About page gives you a direct way to check and complete an update. If Chrome cannot update, confirm that your operating system meets the current requirements listed in Google’s Chrome update instructions; requirements can change.

edge://settings/helpin the address bar. - Let Edge check for updates. If an update is ready, follow the download and installation prompt.

A metered connection, such as cellular data, may require you to start an update manually, and downloading over it may incur charges. If update controls are missing or disabled on a work or school device, contact your organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass its policy. See Microsoft’s Edge update settings.

Confirm the update and handle problems safely
- Return to the browser’s About page or the platform’s update screen to check the installed version or update status. Version numbers vary by browser, platform, release channel, and rollout; use the screen for your own installation rather than a version number copied from a general article.
- Complete any requested relaunch or restart. A downloaded update may not be active until the browser restarts.
- Use a trusted update route: the browser’s built-in update page, the official app store, or the operating system’s own update settings. Microsoft advises downloading files from trusted sources in its guidance on protecting your PC.
- If an update fails, first check that the device is connected to a network and that you are using the official update mechanism. For Edge, consult Microsoft’s Edge installation and update troubleshooting; Microsoft also provides an official Edge download page.
- Do not follow generic instructions to disable antivirus or firewall protection or delete update files unless a trustworthy, product-specific support instruction calls for that step.
