Owning both consoles—or changing a console setting—cannot make an unsupported game work across platforms. Cross-play also does not automatically mean your progress, save data, inventory, or purchases will carry over. Check those features separately for the specific game before buying it or linking accounts.
What cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-save mean
- Cross-play lets players on different systems play together. Whether Xbox and PlayStation players can join each other depends on the game and its supported platform combinations.
- Cross-progression lets you access some or all game progress on multiple platforms, usually after linking the required accounts.
- Cross-save is commonly used to describe carrying save or progress data between platforms. Games may use different terminology and synchronize different things, so check exactly what the game’s support information says is shared.
These are separate features. A game might allow Xbox and PlayStation players to play together without transferring saves, or share progress without every purchased item or currency following you.

How to check whether a specific game works across Xbox and PlayStation
- Find the game’s current official support page or platform compatibility information. Confirm that it explicitly includes cross-play between the Xbox and PlayStation versions you and your friend use.
- Check whether cross-play is enabled by default or can be turned off in the game’s settings. For example, Rocket League lets players disable cross-platform play under Gameplay settings; its support page warns this may lengthen matchmaking. Rocket League Support
- Check the game’s online-mode requirements for your region and edition. Subscription requirements and other conditions vary; there is no universal rule that applies to every game.
- Look separately for cross-progression or cross-save details, including required account links and what data carries over.
If the game does not support the Xbox-to-PlayStation combination, no console-level setting can add that capability.

Minecraft Bedrock on PlayStation
Minecraft Help says PlayStation players who want to play with friends on other platforms or join Realms need to link a Microsoft account to their PSN account. The setup begins from the game’s title screen, where you sign in and follow the displayed code. The help page says one Microsoft account can be linked with a PSN account. That link also gives PlayStation access to eligible non-exclusive Marketplace content bought with that Microsoft account on other game platforms. New purchases on PlayStation use Minecraft Tokens in the PlayStation Minecraft Store. These are Minecraft-specific rules, not a general account-linking policy for other games.
Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League progress on Epic accounts
Epic says syncing progress in Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League requires the platform account for each platform to be linked to an active Epic Games account. Epic limits each account to one linked account of each platform type. For Fortnite, Epic says purchases and progress are accessible across platforms when the platform accounts are linked to the same Epic account, with an important exception: V-Bucks do not share across platforms under that policy. Rocket League inventory and account limits
Rocket League Support says inventory can be shared across platforms when accounts are linked, but account information cannot be combined. Items remain in the account where they originated, so linked accounts must stay linked to access the full inventory. Psyonix’s 2020 setup explainer described a Primary Platform as the source for Rocket Pass progress, Competitive Rank, and XP level on connected platforms, and listed credits and Esports Token balances among items that would not transfer. Before linking, unlinking, or switching platforms
- Identify which account currently holds the progress you want to keep.
- Read the game’s current instructions before linking or unlinking accounts. Some services limit how many accounts of a platform type can be connected.
- Check separately whether saves, levels, inventory, paid content, and currency sync. A statement that “progress” transfers may not include every item or balance.
- If platforms already have different progress, confirm whether the game lets you choose a primary record or merge anything. Epic says its covered titles do not combine separate progress records.
- Check online-mode requirements for your exact game, edition, and market rather than assuming one subscription rule applies everywhere.
