Is an earlier Ace Combat game required before Ace Combat 8?
No required predecessor is identified in the official material reviewed. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve follows a new conflict: the Republic of Sotoa has occupied the Federation of Central Usea (FCU), and the player joins Joker Flight in a fight to reclaim the homeland. The official sources establish that the games share a fictional world, but do not say that earlier campaigns must be completed to understand this story.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
If you want one game before AC8, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is the most direct choice supported by the official material: Bandai Namco’s AC8 site links to it, and PlayStation includes both games in its list of Strangereal-set entries. That makes AC7 a sensible entry point for optional series context—not a confirmed story requirement.

AC8’s story is set in July 2029, according to the ACES WEB series site. That is the game’s fictional chronology, not a real-world release or setting date.
What is the shortest official story lead-in?
HOUR ZERO
Bandai Namco describes HOUR ZERO as a four-part live-action prequel created to introduce fans and newcomers to AC8’s story. Choose it if you would rather watch a focused lead-in than play a full campaign. The publisher’s description establishes its role as a prequel, but does not claim it replaces any particular earlier game.

When should you play the older Strangereal games?
Play further back if you are interested in the setting’s wider history, rather than because AC8 requires a catch-up marathon. PlayStation identifies Ace Combat 3, Ace Combat 4, Ace Combat 5, Ace Combat Zero, Ace Combat X, Ace Combat 6, Ace Combat 7, and Ace Combat 8 as part of the shared fictional world of Strangereal. The official list establishes the connection, not a mandatory order or a dependency between their campaigns.
Choose among these options based on whether you want to play or watch, how much shared-world background you want, and which titles you can access on your platform. The official material reviewed does not establish comparative campaign completion times, so a precise time-saving order cannot be given.

Where does Ace Combat 8 fit in the series?
Bandai Namco announced AC8 on December 12, 2025, as a mainline entry set in Strangereal. The story centers on the FCU–Sotoa conflict and the player’s role as the “Wings of Theve,” a title associated with the FCU capital. ACES WEB places the in-world story in July 2029.
The game released worldwide on October 2, 2026, after early access began September 29. Bandai Namco listed early access on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. PlayStation also reported a PS5 release date of October 2. Its mention of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War as a preorder bonus refers to a historical preorder offer; it should not be read as a current offer.
