Since firmware 1.20, Behringer has provided separate files for those revisions; choosing the matching file matters because their chipsets differ. Check the current downloads and instructions on the official XR18 support page before you begin.
Before updating: identify your XR18 hardware revision
Do not select a firmware file based only on the XR18 model name. Behringer’s release information says that from firmware 1.20 onward, XR18 V1 and XR18 V2 use separate update files because the revisions have different chipsets. The files are not interchangeable. X AIR EDIT reports the connected hardware version and can indicate when a selected update file is incorrect. - Open Behringer’s official XR18 product support page and check its current firmware and software downloads.
- Download the current X AIR EDIT application and the firmware file that matches the hardware revision reported by the app.
- If you are unsure which revision the mixer is, connect it to X AIR EDIT and use the hardware version it reports. Do not proceed with a file for the other revision.
Firmware availability and version numbers can change, so the live product page—not an older download or an assumed “latest” version—is the reference for what is currently offered.
How to update XR18 firmware
Behringer identifies X AIR EDIT as the application used for X AIR firmware updates. Its V1.8 release document, dated June 15, 2023, states: “X-AIR EDIT 1.8 will be used as usual for any firmware update.” The available official information does not establish a complete current sequence of menu names or clicks, so follow the prompts in the version of X AIR EDIT you downloaded and any instructions provided with that firmware package rather than relying on a guessed button sequence.

- Connect the XR18 to the computer or network using a supported connection method.
- Start X AIR EDIT and confirm it detects the mixer and reports the expected hardware revision.
- Select the firmware file for that revision and follow the utility’s on-screen prompts. If the utility flags the file as incorrect, stop and verify the revision and download before continuing.
- Allow the update process to finish according to the utility’s prompts. Do not interrupt it or disconnect the mixer while the update is in progress.
- When the utility indicates completion, follow its instructions to reconnect or check the mixer, then confirm the firmware status in the app.
The official XR18 quick-start guide notes that a control app may warn that mixer firmware is unsupported and recommends updating to the latest version. Treat that warning as a reason to check Behringer’s current download listing and your hardware revision; it does not by itself establish what has changed or identify a specific fault. The official X18/XR18 Quick Start Guide also describes app connection and setup.
Choose Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet
Behringer documents Access Point, Wi-Fi Client, and wired LAN connection options for XR18, and says a computer can connect through the built-in Ethernet LAN connector using Cat 5 cable. Ethernet is a supported option, not a stated universal requirement for firmware updates. The available sources do not establish that either wireless or wired networking is always safer or required.

What to check if the update does not proceed
- The utility says the file is wrong: Recheck whether X AIR EDIT reports V1 or V2, then obtain the corresponding file from the official XR18 support downloads. Do not try the other revision’s firmware.
- The app warns about unsupported firmware: Check the live official download listing for an applicable update, then verify the mixer hardware revision before selecting a file.
- The mixer is not detected: Confirm that the connection method is supported and that X AIR EDIT can communicate with the mixer before attempting an update. Behringer documents both wireless and wired LAN options.
- You cannot find an exact click-by-click instruction: Follow the prompts in the current X AIR EDIT utility and the instructions included with the current firmware download; the 2023 V1.8 release document confirms the updater’s role but does not provide a complete current menu-by-menu procedure.
What a firmware update does—and what the sources establish
Behringer describes the XR18 as an 18-channel, 12-bus mixer with 16 Midas-designed mic preamps, integrated Wi-Fi, an 18 × 18 bidirectional USB audio interface, four onboard effects engines, and six aux buses. Those are product features, not evidence that a particular firmware update improves them. Without release notes for the exact firmware version, do not assume a specific new feature, fix, or performance improvement.
