How to Update Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows and Mac

Run Reader’s built-in update check on Windows or Mac, learn what automatic updating means, and find the right next step if installation fails.

To update Adobe Acrobat Reader, open the app and run its built-in update check: on Windows, choose Menu > Help > Check for updates; on a Mac, choose Help > Check for updates. If Reader offers an update, download or approve it and follow the installation prompts. Adobe also provides the full installer through its Reader Download Center.

Update Reader from within the app

Windows

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  2. Select Menu > Help > Check for updates.
  3. If an update is available, select Download.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions. If prompted to close Acrobat, quit the app and select Retry to complete installation.
  5. Close the success dialog when installation finishes.

Mac

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  2. Select Help > Check for updates.
  3. If an update is available, select Yes.
  4. Select OK after the successful-update dialog appears.

These are Adobe’s documented manual-update steps for Reader. Adobe’s update instructions also describe automatic updates and the full-installer option.

Check whether automatic updates are enabled

Adobe says Acrobat Reader is set up for automatic updates by default, but the available updater controls depend on platform and product context. Its Reader documentation says there is no preferences option to control that default setting for Reader. Adobe’s broader desktop preferences instructions describe controls for Acrobat: on Windows, open Menu > Preferences > Updater to find an option to stop automatic installation; on macOS, open Acrobat > Preferences > Updater to find an option to turn automatic installation on. Those controls should not be assumed to appear identically in every Reader installation. Adobe’s Reader update page and desktop update-preferences documentation explain the distinction.

Why keeping Reader current matters

Updates can include security fixes as well as product changes. In its March 10, 2026 bulletin for Acrobat and Reader on Windows and macOS, Adobe said the addressed vulnerabilities were rated critical and important; successful exploitation could lead to arbitrary code execution and privilege escalation. Adobe reported it was not aware of in-the-wild exploits for the issues covered by that bulletin. This describes that particular release, not every update or the threat status today. Adobe’s March 2026 security bulletin provides the release details.

#1 Best Overall

For current build information, use the in-app update check or consult Adobe’s current security bulletins and Reader release notes. Version identifiers vary by platform and product track, so the versions listed in a dated bulletin should not be treated as the newest build indefinitely.

If Reader will not update

On Windows, an update can fail because of system policy, disabled automatic patched updates, or an installation based on an Administrative Install Point (AIP) that does not support automatic updates. Adobe’s consumer troubleshooting route is to uninstall Reader, reinstall the latest supported version, reopen it, and check for updates again. A managed work or school computer may be governed by organizational policy; contact the system administrator rather than trying to override it. Adobe’s Windows update troubleshooting page describes these causes and options.

If you need to replace the installation, Adobe’s official Reader Download Center offers the full installer. Adobe documents both the in-app updater and the installer, but a managed device may require the organization’s approved deployment route.

Do not confuse a certificate-trust prompt with an app update

An Adobe Approved Trust List (AATL) prompt updates certificates that Reader trusts when validating digitally signed PDFs; it is separate from updating the Reader application. You can accept the prompted trust-settings update, or later manage trust settings through Preferences > Trust Manager. Adobe’s AATL documentation explains the trust-list feature.
