There is no single best VPN for everyone in 2026. The provider that tops a speed test may be a poor fit for someone who cares most about audited privacy claims, and the cheapest monthly price often hides a larger upfront bill. The most useful way to choose is to decide which of your priorities matters most, then check each candidate against evidence for that priority. This article explains which checks matter, what the published 2026 testing does and does not show, and where the limits of a VPN lie.
This article does not report tests run by our own team. Every figure below is attributed to the publisher or testing body that produced it, with its date and conditions.

Start with the job you need the VPN to do
A VPN comparison only makes sense once you know the task. The same provider can be excellent for one task and unremarkable for another, so rank your needs before you read any ranking.
- Privacy from your internet provider or public Wi-Fi: prioritize audit evidence, clear logging policies, and a tested kill switch, because the main risk is traffic leaving your device unencrypted when the tunnel drops.
- Video calls, gaming, or large downloads: prioritize measured speed under the protocol you will actually use, and test a server close to you as well as a distant one.
- Access to content that varies by country: prioritize providers with many server locations, but treat access as unreliable. Availability changes without notice, and using a VPN to get around a service’s regional restrictions may conflict with that service’s terms.
- Several household devices on a tight budget: prioritize device allowance, billing period, and renewal price over headline discounts.
- Occasional use on a free plan: check whether the free tier limits data, servers, or features before you rely on it, and keep it separate from full paid service in any comparison.
What “tested” should mean
A test result is only as useful as its method. When you read a VPN review, look for the following details. If they are missing, the result is an opinion, not a measurement.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Five Gigabit Ports】1 Gigabit WAN Port plus 2 Gigabit WAN/LAN Ports plus 2 Gigabit LAN Port. Up to 3 WAN ports optimize bandwidth usage through one device.
- 【One USB WAN Port】Mobile broadband via 4G/3G modem is supported for WAN backup by connecting to the USB port. For complete list of compatible 4G/3G modems, please visit TP-Link website.
- 【Abundant Security Features】Advanced firewall policies, DoS defense, IP/MAC/URL filtering, speed test and more security functions protect your network and data.

- The number of services tested and how long the testing ran.
- The devices and operating systems used, and whether they were tested on Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS separately.
- The baseline: speed without a VPN, measured on the same connection.
- The server locations, including whether a nearby and a distant server were both used.
- Whether the reviewer deliberately broke the connection to check whether traffic leaked.
- Whether the provider’s privacy policy was compared against a recent independent audit.
Security.org’s 2026 guide describes a method that meets most of these points. Its team says it spent nine months testing more than 50 VPNs, connected to servers across dozens of countries, and used Ookla speed tests on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. It says it deliberately dropped VPN connections to check kill-switch behavior, reviewed provider policies against recent third-party audits, ran ten speed tests per VPN on nearby and distant servers, and compared those results with its baseline connection. Its rubric covers security, privacy, speeds, and value.
What the published 2026 results show
Three recent sources offer useful evidence. None of them is a universal ranking, and their samples, methods, dates, and criteria differ, so their results should not be merged into one list.

The Artifact Security performance test (June 2026)
A NordVPN-hosted article dated August 10, 2026 summarizes a performance test by Artifact Security that was published in June 2026. The test considered throughput, stability, latency, and connection time across routes, using commercially acquired products in isolated, repeatable environments. The article says the design is “consistent with the VPN Testing Guidelines published by AMTSO.” This is the vendor’s account of the test, not an independent inspection, and it is a single round. The reported overall scores for the providers included below are:
| Provider | Reported overall score |
|---|---|
| NordVPN | 91 |
| ExpressVPN | 84 |
| Proton VPN | 83 |
| Mullvad | 70 |
The test covered five providers in total; the table lists only those four because the others are outside the scope of this comparison. Treat these scores as one data point from one round, and check the full report before drawing firm conclusions.

TechRadar’s 2026 speed measurements
TechRadar’s 2026 speed comparison, “The fastest VPNs for outright speed,” uses a 10 Gbps cloud computer alongside everyday connections and devices, tests throughout the year, and measures multiple protocols and routes. Two of its reported results are worth quoting with their context:
Recommended Free Tools
- PrivadoVPN reached 2,334 Mbps using WireGuard in TechRadar’s local test.
- Proton VPN was above 1,500 Mbps on a US-to-UK connection in TechRadar’s test.
These are measurements from one publisher’s setup. They are not speeds you should expect. Your result depends on your baseline connection, the server you pick, the protocol, and your device. TechRadar also reports that some providers perform differently under OpenVPN, which is why protocol choice belongs in any speed comparison.
Check privacy claims as claims
A “no logs” statement is a promise. It is only as strong as the evidence behind it. Before you rely on it, check four things:

- Whether an independent audit exists, and which company performed it.
- The audit’s date and scope: what it examined, and whether it covered the app, the servers, or only the written policy.
- Whether the full audit report is public or only a summary.
- Whether the provider’s policy describes what it logs, not just what it says it does not log.
An audit is a snapshot. It cannot prove how a provider will behave in the future, and audits can miss problems. Tom’s Guide makes this point in its VPN guide: “It’s important to say at the beginning that Tom’s Guide cannot guarantee that any particular VPN isn’t collecting and storing your data.” That is editorial commentary, not a regulator’s or auditor’s finding, but it reflects the right level of caution.

Feature lists tell you what a provider advertises. The following checks tell you what happens when the connection fails, which is when privacy problems usually appear.
- Connect to the VPN and confirm the public IP address has changed. Use a reliable IP-check page or your provider’s own tool.
- Confirm that DNS requests are going through the VPN. Many apps include a DNS leak test; if yours does not, a standalone leak test will do the same job.
- Turn on the kill switch in the app’s settings. Then disconnect the VPN, or turn off the VPN service, while a browser is loading a page. If traffic continues on your normal IP address, the kill switch did not block it.
- Repeat the check after switching servers and after a sleep and wake cycle, because a dropped connection often happens at those moments.
Note which protocol the app uses by default. Some apps switch protocols automatically, and the setting you see may not be the one you tested.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Compare total cost, not the headline price
The monthly price shown on a sales page is often a discounted equivalent of a longer plan billed upfront. Compare these items for each provider before you buy:
- The total amount billed at checkout, and how often it is billed.
- The renewal price after the introductory period, and whether it is shown before you sign up.
- The number of devices allowed simultaneously, and whether that limit applies to routers or only to apps.
- Which features are included in the base plan, and which are sold as extras.
- The refund window, whether it applies to the full plan or only to part of it, and what must be done to request it.
TechRadar’s current comparison of inexpensive services covers plan tiers and upfront prices, but it notes that prices and promotions change, so verify any price on the provider’s checkout page before you buy.
Matching the evidence to your use case
Use this framework to narrow your choice. Each priority points to the evidence that matters most, and to a trade-off you should accept knowingly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- If privacy evidence is your first priority, favor providers with recent, public, independently conducted audits, and accept that these may come with fewer server locations or lower measured speeds on some routes.
- If speed is your first priority, favor providers that show strong results under WireGuard or another modern protocol on routes you use, and accept that the fastest server in a test is not always the most stable one in your daily use.
- If you are a beginner, favor apps with simple setup and clear kill-switch controls, and accept that advanced settings may be limited.
- If budget is your first priority, compare the renewal price and device allowance, not the first-month discount, and accept that the lowest price often comes with a shorter refund window or fewer included features.
What a VPN cannot do
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server, and it changes the IP address that destination websites see. It does not make you anonymous. It does not protect your device against malware, phishing, or a compromised account. It does not stop websites from tracking you through logins or cookies. And it moves trust from your internet provider to the VPN provider, which can see your traffic destinations unless its privacy practices and audits show otherwise. For that reason, no VPN should be described as “100% safe” or “untraceable.”
