How to Update a Self-Hosted GitLab Server Safely

Safely update self-hosted GitLab by planning required upgrade stops, rehearsing a version-matched restore, pausing writes, choosing the right downtime strategy, and verifying every service before reopening traffic.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe way to update a self-hosted GitLab server is to treat the change as a controlled migration: identify the exact source and target versions, follow GitLab’s required upgrade stops, finish background migrations at every stop, create and test a version-matched backup, pause writes and CI/CD, then verify the instance before reopening traffic. A single-node installation requires downtime; a carefully designed multi-node deployment may support a sequential zero-downtime upgrade, but only when its architecture and release span allow it.

What makes a GitLab upgrade safe?

A GitLab upgrade changes more than application binaries. Database schemas, background migrations, encrypted secrets, repository services, runners, registries, search integrations, and high-availability components may all be involved. A safe update therefore has four measurable outcomes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The route from the installed version to the target version is supported, including every required stop release.
  • You can restore the previous working state with a database backup or instance snapshot that matches the old GitLab version and edition.
  • No new writes or CI/CD jobs can leave the system in an inconsistent state while services and migrations are changing.
  • Health checks prove that web, API, repository, background-job, runner, registry, Geo, and search functions work before users return.

GitLab’s own upgrade guidance describes the rollback plan as the path back to the last working state. Write that path down before scheduling the maintenance window, and rehearse it on a production-like clone rather than discovering restore problems during an outage.

1. Inventory the installation before choosing a version

Record the current state in a change document. Do not rely on memory or on a single package manager command, because a self-hosted environment often includes services outside the GitLab application node.

Capture these details

  • Exact GitLab version and edition (Community Edition or Enterprise Edition).
  • Installation method: Linux package, Docker, Helm chart, Operator, or source installation.
  • Number of application and supporting nodes, including load balancers and high-availability controls.
  • PostgreSQL, Redis, Gitaly, and PgBouncer locations, versions, and whether they are managed separately.
  • Geo primary and secondary sites, if Geo is enabled.
  • Runner registrations, Kubernetes agents, container registry, and any external search integration.
  • Operating-system release and architecture, storage capacity, and available maintenance-window time.

Review compatibility and maintenance requirements

Before selecting a target, read the release and maintenance policy, version-specific upgrade notes, operating-system compatibility information, Geo requirements, and documented health checks for that release. A target that is technically newer may still be unsupported on the current operating system or incompatible with an attached service.

Clone production when possible and run the proposed sequence there first. Include the same database engine, Redis arrangement, Gitaly layout, object storage, runners, and integrations. Measure how long migrations and service restarts take; that estimate is more useful than a generic upgrade-duration promise.

2. Build the supported upgrade path

Enter the current and target versions in GitLab’s upgrade-path tool and read the notes for each resulting step. Do not jump directly to the final release simply because the package or container tag exists.

Required stops are mandatory

Some major.minor releases are required stops for some or all environments. GitLab includes these stops because they contain fixes or intermediate changes needed for a later upgrade. At every stop:

  1. Install the approved patch release for that stop.
  2. Wait for all background migrations to finish.
  3. Run the documented health checks and inspect application logs.
  4. Only then continue to the next stop.

GitLab recommends the latest patch release in a major.minor line rather than the first patch release. Treat that recommendation as part of the path: a sequence that lands on an early patch may expose defects already fixed in the latest patch.

Classify the upgrade span

Change Planning consequence Availability implication
Patch-level update Still requires release notes, a tested backup, and post-change checks. Depends on topology and deployment method; do not assume no downtime.
One minor release Follow that release’s notes and complete migrations before any next step. Multi-node architectures may support sequential updates if documented for the release.
Several minor releases Use every required stop and allow migrations at each stop. GitLab requires taking the instance offline for an upgrade across multiple minor releases.
Major release Expect stricter compatibility checks, schema changes, and possible deployment-specific migration controls. Plan a maintenance window unless your exact architecture and procedure explicitly support otherwise.

3. Prepare a rollback that can actually work

A backup is not a rollback plan until you know it can be restored with the exact software that created it. GitLab’s rollback documentation requires at least a database backup made under the same GitLab version and edition that you intend to restore. A backup from a different version may not reverse schema changes made by migrations.

Back up application data

Create a GitLab backup using the procedure for your installation method. For a multi-node installation, snapshot every node or use an equivalent coordinated infrastructure snapshot; a database-only copy cannot recreate changed application nodes, Gitaly data, or service configuration by itself.

Preserve secrets and configuration

Back up the GitLab secrets file and configuration files separately from application data. Secrets are needed to decrypt protected values and to keep authentication, CI variables, and integration credentials usable after restoration. Include load-balancer, PgBouncer, Redis, PostgreSQL, object-storage, registry, and search configuration when those components are managed outside the GitLab package.

Docker database-only example

GitLab documents the following database-only backup before a Docker upgrade:

docker exec -t <container name> gitlab-backup create SKIP=artifacts,repositories,registry,uploads,builds,pages,lfs,packages,terraform_state

This command deliberately skips the listed large data sets, so it is not a complete substitute for a full backup when those data sets must be recoverable. Preserve the secrets file as well, and confirm where repositories, uploads, registry data, and other skipped content are stored and protected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rehearse the restore

  1. Restore the database backup into an isolated, production-like environment.
  2. Install the exact prior GitLab version and edition that created the backup.
  3. Restore the secrets and configuration files.
  4. Reconnect the same classes of PostgreSQL, Redis, Gitaly, object storage, runners, and integrations.
  5. Run health checks, sign in with a test account, clone and push a test repository, execute a test job, and verify registry or Geo functions that your users depend on.
  6. Record the elapsed restore time and the people responsible for each action.

If the rehearsal fails, fix the backup or procedure before the production window. Do not proceed on the assumption that a backup file is valid because it completed without an error.

4. Decide whether the upgrade needs downtime

Situation Recommended availability plan Reason
Single-node GitLab Schedule downtime. GitLab states that single-node instances must be upgraded with downtime.
Multi-node, one minor release, documented HA procedure Consider sequential zero downtime or a controlled downtime upgrade. Nodes can be rotated behind load balancing, but behavior depends on the exact architecture.
Several minor releases Take the instance offline. GitLab requires downtime across multiple minor releases.
Major database or schema change Use a maintenance window unless the release-specific procedure explicitly permits otherwise. Foreground migrations and compatibility boundaries can make mixed versions unsafe.
Helm or Operator deployment Follow the chart or Operator’s stated maintenance and migration sequence. Migration jobs, maintenance mode, and controller behavior differ from package upgrades.

Zero downtime is an availability technique, not a promise that every request succeeds throughout the change. During a rolling upgrade, nodes may run different versions temporarily, background migrations may affect behavior, and load-balancer or database failover must be tested. If the release notes do not describe a safe mixed-version sequence for your topology, choose downtime.

5. Freeze writes and CI/CD activity

Pause CI/CD pipelines and jobs before changing services. Runner trace updates can fail while GitLab is being upgraded, leaving jobs with incomplete logs or confusing statuses. Communicate the freeze to developers and automation owners, and disable scheduled pipelines that could restart during the window.

For a downtime procedure, shut down application writers before database migrations begin. Writers include web and API traffic, Sidekiq workers, runners, automation scripts, and integrations that create issues, merge requests, artifacts, packages, registry tags, or repository changes. Keep the backup and rollback operators able to reach the underlying infrastructure without reopening user traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a written change checklist

  • Maintenance announcement sent with start time, expected impact, and status channel.
  • Upgrade and rollback owners identified, with a separate person empowered to call a rollback.
  • Backups completed, checksums or completion records saved, and restore rehearsal accepted.
  • CI/CD, scheduled jobs, webhooks, and external writers paused.
  • Current version, target version, required stops, and migration completion criteria visible to the operator.
  • Monitoring dashboards and logs open before services are stopped.

6. Execute the procedure for your deployment method

Linux package, multi-node downtime procedure

For a multi-node installation using the documented downtime sequence, stop application traffic first. Upgrade the supporting components in the order GitLab documents: Consul, Gitaly, Rails, PostgreSQL, Redis, and PgBouncer. Start the application only after the component versions and configuration have been checked, then proceed to verification. The exact package commands and service names vary with the operating system and topology, so use the release-specific package instructions rather than substituting commands from another installation type.

Linux package, sequential zero-downtime procedure

Place the instance behind its load balancer and HA controls, remove one application node from service, upgrade it, verify it, and return it to the pool before moving to the next node. Preserve capacity for failures, and monitor database, Redis, Gitaly, and Sidekiq behavior while versions are mixed. GitLab cautions that distributed zero-downtime behavior depends on the exact architecture; background migrations also appear in monthly releases, so a rolling sequence is not automatically safe for every target.

Docker

Pin the target image to the version selected by the upgrade-path tool rather than using an unqualified latest tag. Stop or drain writers according to the chosen downtime plan, create the documented database backup, preserve secrets and mounted configuration, replace the container, and wait for the container’s migrations and health state before enabling traffic. Confirm that persistent volumes contain repositories and every data set excluded from a database-only backup.

Helm on Kubernetes

Follow the chart-version procedure for the target GitLab release. Use the chart’s migration jobs, maintenance mode, and post-migration checks as documented, and verify that the resulting pods, services, persistent volumes, and ingress route are healthy. During a major database upgrade, GitLab says migrations may need to be disabled temporarily and explicitly re-enabled afterward. If that control is required, record the disabled state and make re-enabling it a named step rather than an informal reminder.

GitLab Operator

The default Operator zero-downtime path updates one minor version at a time. Reconcile and verify each version before requesting the next one. A downtime path requires a maintenance window and a backup. Confirm that the custom resource, managed database connections, storage, and generated secrets remain consistent after each reconciliation.

Source installation

Use the source installation instructions for the exact GitLab release and follow its dependency, database, migration, and asset-build requirements. Source deployments have no package or container tag to enforce a supported path automatically, so record the checked-out release, dependency versions, build output, configuration, and rollback checkout alongside the database backup.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

7. Verify the instance before reopening traffic

Do not declare success because the login page loads. Run GitLab’s recommended checks from an application node:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo gitlab-rake gitlab:check
sudo gitlab-rake gitlab:doctor:secrets

Check the database background-migration status and confirm that all migrations are complete before proceeding to the next required stop or returning the service to users. A migration still running is an unfinished upgrade, not a harmless warning.

Functional verification checklist

  • Sign in through the web UI and confirm that projects, groups, permissions, and administration pages load.
  • Clone a repository, create a test branch, push a commit, and remove the test data according to your change policy.
  • Send a representative web request and API request; inspect error rates and response logs.
  • Confirm Sidekiq queues drain and that scheduled and asynchronous jobs run.
  • Start a controlled runner job and verify trace output, artifacts, caches, and final status.
  • Pull and push a test container image if the registry is enabled.
  • Check external PostgreSQL, Redis, Gitaly, PgBouncer, object storage, and search integrations.
  • For Geo, verify replication and secondary-site health using the checks appropriate to your topology.
  • Review CPU, memory, disk, database connections, queue latency, and logs for at least one normal workload cycle.

Only after these checks pass should you resume runners, scheduled pipelines, webhooks, and general traffic. Keep the old backup, logs, package or image references, and change record until the new version has operated successfully for the retention period required by your organization.

8. Recognize common failure modes

“The target version installed, but the path is unsupported”

Compare the current-to-target route with the upgrade-path tool. Insert every required stop and use the latest patch release in each major.minor line. If a prior stop’s migrations are incomplete, return to that stop’s health checks instead of continuing.

“Users can log in, but jobs or traces are failing”

Keep CI/CD paused while checking runner connectivity, Sidekiq queues, Redis, and trace updates. Runner trace writes can fail during the upgrade; resume jobs only after a controlled test job completes and its trace and artifacts are present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The application starts, but encrypted values or integrations are broken”

Stop reopening traffic and verify that the original secrets file and configuration were restored to the correct paths and permissions. A database restore without matching secrets can leave protected data unreadable even when tables are present.

“A migration changed the schema and the new release cannot be kept”

Do not downgrade binaries over the changed database. Stop the new services, install the exact prior GitLab version and edition, and restore the database backup made under that version. Restore secrets and configuration too. GitLab notes that the matching backup is required to reverse schema changes introduced by migrations.

“A zero-downtime rollout is behaving inconsistently”

Remove upgraded nodes from service, keep the known-good nodes serving traffic if they remain compatible, and consult the release-specific rolling-upgrade procedure. If mixed versions, background migrations, or HA dependencies are outside the documented design, convert the change to downtime rather than improvising.

9. Roll back in a controlled sequence

  1. Declare the rollback and stop user traffic, runners, scheduled jobs, and other writers.
  2. Stop services running the new GitLab version.
  3. Install the exact prior GitLab version and edition recorded in the change plan.
  4. Restore the database backup created under that same prior version and edition.
  5. Restore the matching secrets file and configuration, plus any node or service snapshots required by the topology.
  6. Start dependencies and GitLab services in the documented order.
  7. Run sudo gitlab-rake gitlab:check, sudo gitlab-rake gitlab:doctor:secrets, migration-status checks, and the functional checklist.
  8. Resume traffic and CI/CD only after repository, API, runner, registry, and integration tests pass.

Keep evidence from the failed attempt: migration output, service logs, database errors, health-check results, and the precise versions used. That record lets you correct the upgrade path or restore procedure instead of repeating the same failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. A practical go/no-go decision

Proceed only when every answer below is “yes”:

  • Is the source version, edition, topology, and installation method recorded?
  • Is the target path generated from GitLab’s upgrade-path tool with all required stops?
  • Have background migrations completed at the rehearsal stops?
  • Is there a version- and edition-matched database backup or a coordinated snapshot of every required node?
  • Have secrets and configuration been backed up and restored successfully in a clone?
  • Are downtime or zero-downtime assumptions explicitly supported for this release span and architecture?
  • Are CI/CD and other writers paused, with an owner for each freeze and resume action?
  • Are the pre- and post-upgrade health checks, logs, and rollback commands available to the operator?

A “no” answer is a reason to reschedule, not a minor paperwork gap. The safest GitLab upgrade is the one for which the forward path, verification criteria, and reverse path are all executable before production traffic is touched.
