Lithium is the best general starting point for a Fabric or NeoForge server when you want better game-logic performance without changing vanilla behavior. Add FerriteCore when memory use is the constraint, Krypton when network processing is the suspected bottleneck, and targeted tools such as ServerCore, ModernFix, Immersive Optimization or Chunky only when monitoring shows the matching problem. Use ViaVersion separately when the goal is letting clients on different Minecraft versions connect; it is a compatibility tool, not a general performance mod.
These choices run on the server, so players can connect with an ordinary, unmodded client when the server platform and Minecraft version are supported. The administrator still has to install matching server builds, test them and keep a rollback copy.

What “server-side” means in Minecraft
Fabric’s community wiki defines a server-side mod as one that “runs exclusively on the server, without the need for a mod on the client.” In practical terms, the server loads the mod and handles its changes; a player joining from the standard Minecraft launcher does not have to install the same file.
That distinction is different from a mod that merely can run on a dedicated server. Some mods offer both client and server components, while others require matching files on both sides. The list below focuses on projects identified as server-side compatible or designed for server integration.
#1 Best Overall

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Server-side does not mean platform-independent. A Fabric mod cannot be uploaded to a Paper or Spigot server and expected to work. The loader, Minecraft version and mod build must agree, and a proxy or plugin has its own compatibility requirements.
Quick comparison
| Option | Primary problem addressed | Platform information established by the project or guide | Client installation | Behavior and risk profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lithium | Game logic: physics, mob AI, block ticking and related systems | Fabric and NeoForge builds are referenced for server use | Not required for supported server installations | Designed to preserve vanilla mechanics; the strongest general-purpose baseline |
| FerriteCore | Memory use and garbage-collection pressure | Server-side support is documented; use the matching loader build | Not required for supported server installations | Memory-focused; actual savings depend on the world and modpack |
| Krypton | Networking overhead and packet-processing work | Fabric server mod | Not required for supported server installations | Networking optimization; measure on the target Minecraft version and player load |
| ServerCore | Server scheduling and other targeted performance issues | Listed as a Fabric optimization option | Not required where the server build supports it | Targeted rather than a replacement for a broad optimization baseline |
| ModernFix | Memory behavior, startup and bug-related performance work | Listed as a Fabric optimization option | Not required where the server build supports it | Use for the specific fixes and optimizations relevant to your version |
| Immersive Optimization | Entity-ticking and related workload | Listed as a Fabric optimization option | Not required where the server build supports it | Targeted entity performance; test gameplay-sensitive areas carefully |
| Chunky | Lag from generating chunks on demand | Listed as a chunk pre-generation option | Not required for the server-side pre-generation job | Changes when terrain is generated rather than changing the client |
| ViaVersion | Protocol and Minecraft-version compatibility | Paper, Spigot and Velocity plugins; standalone proxy; Fabric and Forge integrations | Clients can use supported versions without installing the server integration | Compatibility-first; do not treat it as a tick, RAM or network-speed optimizer |
“Not required” in the table means the project is identified as server-side compatible for the relevant setup. It does not override a project’s version-specific dependency list or a server’s loader requirements.
Best general-purpose baseline: Lithium
Lithium optimizes many of Minecraft’s game-logic systems, including physics, mob AI and block ticking. Its stated goal is to improve performance while avoiding changes to vanilla mechanics. That makes it the sensible first experiment for a mostly vanilla survival server, a small community server or a larger server where you want to reduce CPU work before making narrower changes.
Why start here
- It addresses several common sources of tick-time pressure instead of betting on one symptom.
- Its design target is vanilla-compatible behavior, which lowers the risk of changing farms, redstone or mob interactions compared with an aggressive gameplay rewrite.
- It is identified for server use on Fabric and has NeoForge builds available for matching environments.
Install it before stacking several other optimizers. Record the server’s normal tick time, CPU use and player count, then compare the same activities after the change. If the server remains slow, the measurement will tell you whether the next step should address memory, networking, entity ticking or chunk generation.
Best for memory pressure: FerriteCore
FerriteCore focuses on reducing Minecraft’s memory usage. It is the appropriate next choice when the server’s heap is repeatedly close to its limit, garbage collection causes pauses, or a large modpack consumes more memory than the host can comfortably provide.

How to interpret its RAM figures
The project documents a workload-specific example in which RAM use in All Of Fabric 3 fell from 1,792 MB to 984 MB. Those numbers describe that modpack and test context; they are not a universal percentage or a promise for a vanilla world, another modpack, different Java settings or different hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
Measure the server’s peak heap, collection pauses and steady-state usage before and after installation. A lower allocation number is useful only if it also reduces pauses or leaves enough headroom for player activity and chunk loading.
When it is the wrong first move
If the heap is comfortable but one tick takes too long because of entity AI or redstone, a memory optimizer will not address the underlying CPU bottleneck. Use the server’s profiling or monitoring data to distinguish allocation pressure from game-logic work.
Best for networking overhead: Krypton
Krypton is a Fabric mod that attempts to optimize Minecraft’s networking stack. It belongs in a test when network processing is consuming a noticeable share of server work, particularly as concurrent player counts increase.
What to check before installing
- Confirm that the server is running Fabric and that a Krypton build exists for the exact Minecraft version.
- Check whether high CPU usage correlates with player count or packet activity rather than with mobs, redstone or chunk generation.
- Compare network load and tick time under a repeatable player scenario; a networking change cannot be judged from idle measurements alone.
Krypton is not automatically “best” for every server. The optimization is workload-dependent, and the available build can change as Minecraft’s networking internals change.

Targeted additions for specific symptoms
ServerCore: scheduling and server-side behavior
ServerCore is listed in Modrinth’s optimization guidance as a Fabric performance option. Select it when profiling points to server scheduling or one of the specific systems it supports. It is a targeted addition, not a substitute for first establishing whether the bottleneck is CPU, memory, networking or chunk generation.
ModernFix: memory, startup and bug-related work
ModernFix is also listed as a Fabric optimization option. Its value depends on the Minecraft version and the particular fixes that apply to your installation. Read the release notes for the matching build, test startup and runtime behavior, and keep the change isolated so a regression can be identified.
Immersive Optimization: entity ticking
Immersive Optimization is aimed at entity-ticking and related workloads. It is most relevant when profiling shows that entities, rather than terrain or network handling, dominate tick time. Entity optimizations can interact with farms, mob behavior and simulation-heavy builds, so test those areas before deploying to a live world.
Chunky: prevent on-demand chunk-generation spikes
Chunky pre-generates terrain so players are less likely to force expensive new chunk generation while exploring. It addresses the timing of the work rather than making every chunk intrinsically cheaper.

Run pre-generation during a maintenance window with backups in place. Watch disk space, CPU load and world size while the job runs. Pre-generation is especially useful for an established world with a planned exploration boundary; it is less useful when players routinely travel far beyond any practical border.

ViaVersion is for compatibility, not optimization
ViaVersion’s stated purpose is to let clients from different Minecraft versions connect across supported server arrangements. Its ecosystem includes Paper, Spigot and Velocity plugins, a standalone proxy, and Fabric or Forge integrations.
Choose it when the operational requirement is cross-version access. For example, a server may need a proxy or integration that accepts clients on more than one supported protocol while the server remains on its chosen version. Confirm the exact client, server and proxy combinations in the project’s compatibility documentation.

Because its primary job is protocol translation, ViaVersion should be evaluated with connection success, feature compatibility and error logs—not with the expectation of a fixed TPS, FPS, RAM or latency improvement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by the symptom you can measure
| Observed symptom | First candidate | What to measure | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tick time rises during ordinary simulation, mobs or redstone | Lithium | Per-tick CPU time, mob and block activity, and behavior of farms | That every server receives the same percentage improvement |
| Heap usage stays high or garbage collection causes pauses | FerriteCore | Peak and steady-state heap, collection duration and pause frequency | That the All Of Fabric 3 RAM example applies to your world |
| CPU or latency changes track the number of connected players | Krypton | Network processing, packet load, tick time and connection errors | That networking is the bottleneck without measuring it |
| Entity-heavy areas cause the slowdown | Immersive Optimization | Entity counts, tick contribution and farm behavior | That a targeted entity change is behavior-neutral in every build |
| Exploration causes sudden lag and disk activity | Chunky | Chunk-generation time, storage growth and pre-generation progress | That pre-generation removes all other causes of exploration lag |
| Players on different versions cannot connect | ViaVersion | Supported protocol combinations and proxy/server logs | That protocol compatibility is a performance optimization |
Installation and rollout procedure
- Identify the exact environment. Record the Minecraft version, loader, server software, Java version, proxy arrangement and the versions used by existing mods. Do not begin by copying a Fabric jar into a Paper, Spigot or Bukkit-only panel.
- Match the project to the loader. Use a Fabric or NeoForge build where the project specifies one. Lithium, FerriteCore and Krypton require matching loader and Minecraft-version builds; the optimization guide identifies ServerCore, ModernFix and Immersive Optimization as Fabric options. ViaVersion must match the server, proxy or integration type you are using.
- Back up the world and configuration. Make a complete world backup and preserve the current server files. For Chunky, ensure the destination has enough disk space for the additional generated terrain.
- Install one change at a time. Stop the server, place the compatible mod or integration in the platform’s normal server location, and restart. Do not combine several new optimizers in the same restart if you want a useful before-and-after comparison.
- Check startup output. Confirm that the loader reports the intended version, dependencies are satisfied and no mod is being rejected as client-only, incompatible or built for another Minecraft release.
- Repeat a known workload. Use the same world area and similar player activity before and after the change. For Chunky, measure the pre-generation job separately from normal gameplay.
- Record the result. Track tick time, CPU utilization, heap and garbage-collection behavior, network load, chunk-generation time and any gameplay or connection errors that apply to the mod.
- Keep a rollback path. If startup fails or behavior regresses, stop the server, restore the previous mod set and world backup, then inspect logs before trying a different build.
Compatibility and troubleshooting
The server will not start
The usual causes are a loader mismatch, an incorrect Minecraft version, a missing dependency or a mod intended for the client. Remove the newest change, read the first meaningful error in the startup log and verify the project’s supported versions before reinstalling.
Players see a missing-mod or handshake error
Check whether the file is actually server-side for the selected build. A mod that requires matching client files is not eligible for a vanilla-client server, even if another release of the same project supports server-only operation.
Best Value
Performance is unchanged
That result is useful: the selected mod may not target the real bottleneck, or the workload may be too light to expose a difference. Recheck measurements under the activity that causes the slowdown instead of adding more mods blindly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGameplay changes after an optimization
Test redstone contraptions, mob farms, high-entity areas and chunk borders after any targeted optimization. If behavior is unacceptable, restore the prior configuration and report the exact Minecraft version, loader, mod versions and reproduction steps to the project maintainers.
Chunk pre-generation overwhelms the server
Pause or stop the job, lower its operational scope, and run it during maintenance rather than during peak play. Check disk capacity and the intended world border before resuming.
What performance claims can—and cannot—be promised
There is no single benchmark percentage for these mods that applies across Minecraft versions, hardware, world seeds, modpacks and player counts. A reduction measured on one workload can disappear on another, and a change that helps CPU time may expose a memory or storage limit elsewhere.
Use the projects’ documented functions and platform support as the selection criteria, then validate the result on the server that matters. Treat the FerriteCore example of 1,792 MB falling to 984 MB in All Of Fabric 3 as an illustration of a particular workload, not a guarantee. Likewise, do not promise a fixed FPS, TPS, RAM or latency gain without a controlled test on the target setup.

- Start with Lithium on the correct Fabric or NeoForge build when broad game-logic optimization is needed.
- Add FerriteCore only if memory measurements show allocation or garbage-collection pressure.
- Test Krypton when network processing scales with player activity and the server is Fabric-based.
- Use ServerCore, ModernFix or Immersive Optimization for the specific subsystem identified by profiling.
- Run Chunky when on-demand terrain generation is the cause of exploration spikes.
- Add ViaVersion only when clients on multiple supported Minecraft versions must connect.
This staged approach keeps each change explainable, protects the world with a rollback copy and avoids confusing compatibility features with performance features.
