For a short dive, underwater travel, looting, or brief construction, Respiration III is usually enough. For extended ocean work, combine it with a Water Breathing potion, a bubble column for refills, or an activated conduit. The right choice depends on how long you must stay submerged, whether you can carry consumables, and whether you need one player or an entire work area covered.

What Respiration does
Respiration is an enchantment for helmets and turtle shells. Minecraft Help describes its effect simply as “Extends underwater breathing time.” In practical terms, it gives your air meter more time before you must surface or refill your air supply.
The enchantment changes breath-holding time, not the way underwater movement or mining works. You still have to manage your air meter, and you can still run out of air if you remain submerged beyond the level’s limit. Respiration is therefore best understood as extra margin for a dive rather than permanent underwater breathing.
#1 Best Overall
The maximum level is Respiration III
Respiration has three obtainable levels: I, II, and III. Respiration III is the highest level; there is no Respiration IV in normal gameplay. Higher levels add more time rather than granting a different type of water-breathing effect.
It belongs on head armor
Apply Respiration to a standard helmet or to a turtle shell. It is not an enchantment for chestplates, leggings, boots, weapons, or tools. A turtle shell can therefore serve two purposes at once: it supplies its own temporary water-breathing benefit and can carry Respiration for additional breathing time.
How long each Respiration level lasts
The normal air supply is about 15 seconds. Each Respiration level adds approximately another 15 seconds, producing the following practical timings. These are the commonly cited gameplay figures; treat them as approximate rather than a stopwatch guarantee.
| Helmet enchantment | Approximate underwater time | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| No Respiration | About 15 seconds | Normal breath-holding time before you need to surface or refill air. |
| Respiration I | About 30 seconds | Roughly doubles the normal 15-second window. |
| Respiration II | About 45 seconds | Useful for short trips, looting, and simple underwater tasks. |
| Respiration III | About 60 seconds | Approximately one minute of breath-holding before a refill is needed. |
The one-minute figure for Respiration III is the key answer to most “How long can I stay underwater?” questions. It is long enough to make many brief dives comfortable, but it is not an unlimited supply of air. Plan a route back to the surface or to a refill point before the extra time is gone.
Does Respiration III give infinite water breathing?
No. Respiration III extends your air supply to roughly one minute; it does not create true indefinite water breathing. Once that extended air time is exhausted, you still need to surface or use another method to restore or replace your breathing time.
Rank #2
This distinction matters most during construction and exploration. A player placing a few blocks, checking a chest, or crossing a shallow section can usually work within the Respiration III window. A player clearing a large underwater site, searching an ocean monument, or repeatedly traveling far from the surface will eventually need a sustainable refill or a different source of water breathing.
Use the timer as a planning limit
- Begin a short task only when you know where the nearest surface or refill point is.
- Leave time to swim back instead of using every second on the task itself.
- If the route is complex or visibility is poor, choose a longer-duration option rather than relying on the maximum Respiration level alone.
- Remember that Respiration is reusable: once your air is restored, the enchantment is ready for the next dive without consuming an item.
How to get Respiration
There are several legitimate ways to obtain the enchantment. The exact offer or item you receive can vary, so do not assume that one method will always produce Respiration III immediately.
Enchant a helmet at an enchanting table
- Place an enchanting table where you can use it.
- Put a helmet or turtle shell in the item slot.
- Review the available enchantment choices and select an option that includes Respiration when it appears.
- Pay the displayed experience and lapis-lazuli costs to complete the enchantment.
- Check the item’s tooltip to confirm the level before you leave the table.
An enchanting table can produce different results each time. If the offered choices do not include the level or combination you want, enchant a less valuable item to refresh the available options and try again.
Find an enchanted book by fishing
Fishing can produce enchanted books, including books with helmet enchantments. When you obtain a Respiration book, keep it in a chest until you are ready to apply it; the book itself does not extend your breathing time while it remains in your inventory.
Trade with a villager
Villager trades can provide enchanted books. Look through available offers for a Respiration book and check its level. A trade for Respiration I or II can still be useful, while several lower-level books can be combined later if the anvil costs are acceptable.
Rank #3
Combine a book and helmet in an anvil
- Place an anvil and open its interface.
- Put the Respiration enchanted book in one input slot.
- Put the helmet or turtle shell you want to enchant in the other input slot.
- Review the resulting item and the required experience level.
- Take the combined helmet from the output slot.
The anvil method gives you direct control over which helmet receives the enchantment. It is especially useful when the helmet already has other enchantments you want to keep.
Respiration and turtle shells
A turtle shell is a helmet item with a temporary water-breathing benefit of its own. Adding Respiration extends the time available after that built-in benefit and the normal air supply are taken into account. This makes a turtle shell a practical choice for players who are preparing for a dive but do not yet have a permanent underwater setup.
The trade-off is equipment choice: wearing a turtle shell means using your head-armor slot for that item. If you rely on a different helmet for protection or other enchantments, decide whether the shell’s temporary breathing benefit is worth changing your normal gear for the planned task.
Respiration is not Aqua Affinity
Respiration and Aqua Affinity are separate helmet enchantments with different jobs:

| Respiration | Extends underwater air time. | Yes. |
| Aqua Affinity | Improves underwater mining speed. | No. |
A helmet can be useful with both enchantments because they solve different problems. Respiration gives you more time to remain submerged; Aqua Affinity makes it faster to break blocks underwater. Aqua Affinity alone will not stop your air meter from running down, and Respiration alone will not restore normal land-speed mining underwater.

Which underwater-breathing method should you use?
Compare the main options by duration, consumables, coverage, and secondary benefits before starting a long dive.
| Method | Duration or coverage | Consumes an item? | Area or player scope | Other benefits or limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Respiration I–III | About 30, 45, or 60 seconds respectively. | No; it is an enchantment on your helmet or turtle shell. | Only the wearer. | Reusable and convenient, but time-limited. |
| Water Breathing potion | Longer-lasting underwater breathing than Respiration alone; no single duration is established for every potion variant. | Yes. | The player who drinks it. | Useful for planned long dives, but you must carry and consume potions. |
| Bubble column | Refills air whenever you reach the column’s refill point. | No potion required. | A specific installed location. | Requires you to return to the column; it does not follow you through an ocean. |
| Activated conduit | Indefinite breathing within its effect area while active. | No consumable during use, but it requires substantial materials and setup. | Everyone inside the conduit’s area. | Also improves underwater vision and mining. |
| Turtle shell | Temporary water-breathing benefit, with additional time from Respiration if enchanted. | No consumable for the shell’s effect. | Only the wearer. | Uses the head-armor slot. |
When Respiration is enough
Short exploration and travel
Respiration I or II is often sufficient for crossing a narrow underwater gap, checking a submerged structure, or collecting a nearby item. Respiration III gives more margin when the route is unfamiliar or you need time to orient yourself.

If the target is close to the surface and you can return directly, the extra 15-second increments are valuable. Respiration III reduces the pressure to rush through a chest or pickup, but you should still leave a return buffer.
Brief construction
Placing or removing a small number of blocks can fit inside a one-minute window, especially when you have already planned the layout. For a large build, repeated trips to the surface become inefficient; use a potion, bubble column, or conduit instead.

Use a Water Breathing potion for a planned long dive
Potions are consumable, but they provide a longer-lasting breathing option than relying on the Respiration timer alone. Drink one before entering a large underwater work area and keep a spare available if the task may take longer than expected. Because the exact duration depends on the potion variant, check the item you are carrying rather than assuming every Water Breathing potion lasts the same amount of time.
Best Value
Use a bubble column for a fixed worksite
A bubble column is useful when your underwater activity is concentrated around one base, shaft, or entry point. Build or use the column so you can reach it quickly, then treat it as an air station between work periods. It does not solve the problem of a moving expedition because you must return to its location to refill.

Activate a conduit for sustained area coverage
An activated conduit is the long-duration solution when several players or a broad underwater work area need continuous support. Within its effect area, Conduit Power allows indefinite breathing and also improves underwater vision and mining. The setup requires substantial materials and preparation, so it is more appropriate for an established base or major project than for a quick scouting trip.
A practical loadout for underwater work
Choose equipment according to the dive rather than treating Respiration as a complete survival plan.
- Quick visit: A Respiration helmet is usually enough when the destination is close and the route is obvious.
- Mining or building: Pair Respiration with Aqua Affinity so you gain both additional air time and faster underwater mining.
- Long solo expedition: Wear Respiration, carry Water Breathing potions, and mark a reliable route back to the surface.
- Permanent project: Establish a bubble-column refill point or activate a conduit before beginning repetitive construction.
- Temporary preparation: Use a turtle shell when its built-in water-breathing benefit fits the task and you do not need another helmet.
Troubleshooting common mistakes
“My Respiration helmet ran out of air.”
Respiration does not create an air source; it only extends the existing supply. Check the enchantment level and plan for the approximate limit: 30 seconds at level I, 45 at level II, or 60 at level III. If the task routinely exceeds that limit, switch to a potion, bubble column, or conduit.
“I equipped Aqua Affinity, but I still drown.”
Aqua Affinity affects underwater mining speed, not breathing. Add Respiration to the helmet or use another breathing method.
“I cannot find Respiration IV.”
Respiration III is the maximum level. Improve your setup with a longer-duration alternative instead of searching for a higher level that does not exist.
“The enchanted book is not helping.”
An enchanted book has no effect while it is merely carried. Combine it with a helmet or turtle shell in an anvil, then equip the resulting item.
“A conduit works at one location but not another.”
Conduit Power is area-based. Move back inside the activated conduit’s effect area, or use a potion or Respiration while traveling beyond that area.
