Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a routine PS5 update, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and select Update System Software if an update is available. If a download stalls, retry it from Downloads/Uploads before switching to Sony’s USB method. Keep reinstallation as a last resort: it deletes all user data.
Update your PS5 from Settings
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- If the console shows Update Available, select Update System Software and follow the prompts.
You can also configure automatic updates in the same settings area. Sony’s live PS5 system software page lists the current version and its features; those details can change, so check Sony’s page rather than relying on a version number in an article.

Use Sony’s official update file and documented process. Sony warns: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your console to be damaged.” It also advises against installing immediately before or after a power outage. Unofficial files or methods can prevent the console from operating properly and may affect warranty or repair service.
What to do if an update is stuck or fails
- Press the PS button to open the control center, then select Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the system software update and choose View Error Info.
- Select Try Again.
If the download fails repeatedly, use Sony’s manual update instructions. If an error code appears, search that exact code in Sony’s PS5 error-code index and follow the code-specific guidance; similar-looking codes can have different causes.

For error WS-116522-7
Sony’s guidance for WS-116522-7 recommends restarting the PS5, using a wired internet connection if possible, configuring network settings again, or updating with a USB storage device. These steps are specific to this code, not a universal fix for every update error.
Update a PS5 with a USB drive
Use this route when the ordinary download repeatedly fails or you need to install the official update file manually. You need a PC or Mac with internet access, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a controller connected to the PS5 with a USB cable for Safe Mode navigation. Sony’s system software page specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file; check the live page for current requirements.

- Save the file in
PS5/UPDATE/with the exact namePS5UPDATE.PUP. - Connect the USB drive to the PS5 and start the console in Safe Mode.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
If the console cannot find the file, confirm the USB drive is FAT32 or exFAT and that the folder path and filename match exactly. Sony specifies uppercase letters and single-byte characters for the names. Do not use firmware from third-party sites.
Enter Safe Mode
- Turn off the PS5 by holding the power button for three seconds.
- After the console is off, hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which Sony says sounds about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
Safe Mode offers startup and troubleshooting options, but some erase data. Read the option’s description and understand its consequences before selecting it. Sony’s Safe Mode instructions explain the available choices.

Choose the update route that fits the problem
| Situation | Route | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| The PS5 reaches the home screen | Update in Settings | Use the standard system software settings path. |
| The update is visible but stalled or failed | Retry from Downloads/Uploads | Open View Error Info, then select Try Again. |
| The PS5 cannot reach the home screen but can connect to PlayStation | Safe Mode network update | Choose Update System Software in Safe Mode and follow the on-screen network instructions. |
| The network download keeps failing or the console is offline | Safe Mode USB update | Requires Sony’s official file, a compatible USB drive, and a PC or Mac to download the file. |
| Other troubleshooting has failed | Consider reinstallation only as a last resort | Reinstallation deletes all user data and removes the system software. |
Know which Safe Mode options erase data
- Update System Software installs an update. Do not turn off the console while installation is underway.
- Restore Default Settings restores default settings without deleting games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data, according to Sony.
- Reset PS5 deletes user data.
- Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes user data and removes the system software. It is not a routine update fix.
When to reinstall or contact PlayStation Support
Sony says reinstalling system software should be the last troubleshooting step. Its reinstallation instructions warn: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” Back up data if possible before proceeding, and follow Sony’s reinstallation process rather than treating the ordinary update file as interchangeable with the reinstallation file.
If the USB update still fails after checking the format, folder path, and filename—or the reinstallation process fails—use Sony’s repair diagnostic and support route. Do not move to a data-erasing option simply because an update download stalled.
