Check the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility details first, then compare recent reports for that exact game and test representative gameplay if you can. The label is a starting point—not a promise of a specific frame rate, battery life, visual quality, or working online features on every Deck setup.
1. Check the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility details
Open the game’s Steam Store page or its Library entry and find its Steam Deck compatibility details. Note the displayed status and any caveats about controls, text, or features. Valve said in its March 4, 2022 Steam Deck announcement that compatibility ratings are “just a snapshot of a single moment” and change over time. Check the current listing rather than relying on an old rating or screenshot.

Compatibility means more than whether a game launches. Valve’s 2022 announcement gave examples involving keyboard prompts and optional functionality. Those examples help explain why a game’s experience can have caveats; they should not be treated as a complete or guaranteed description of today’s rating rules.

2. Decide what “runs well” means for you
Set your own requirements before weighing a label or performance report. For one player, dependable launches and saves may be enough; another may need readable text, smooth motion, controller support, multiplayer, or a particular battery life. A compatibility rating is not a substitute for checking the specific qualities that matter to you.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
- Reliability: Does the game launch, stay stable, and save and load correctly?
- Controls and readability: Can you use the controls comfortably, and can you read the interface at handheld size?
- Performance: Is motion smooth enough in demanding gameplay, not just in menus?
- Required features: Do online play and any anti-cheat functionality you need work?
- Battery and comfort: Are battery behavior, heat, and fan noise acceptable for your use?
3. Compare recent reports for the exact game
Look for reports that identify when they were tested, the game build, Deck model, SteamOS and Proton versions, settings, and the area measured. Compare more than one report where practical. A brief “runs great” comment may not cover a demanding later level, a control limitation, or a setup-specific tweak.
Community sources such as Steam Curator: Deck Compatibility and Steam Deck HQ publish game-specific observations that can help you investigate controls, stutter, readability, frame rates, settings, and battery behavior. Treat these as their authors’ reports, not official certification or guarantees. Some examples are dated, so look for newer information about the game you plan to play.

4. Test more than the launcher
If you can try the game on the Deck you intend to use, test ordinary play as well as its menus. A useful check includes a demanding scene and the features you actually depend on.

- Play a demanding scene and a representative section of combat, traversal, or other routine gameplay.
- Watch for crashes, severe frame-time spikes, or shader stutter; note whether problems persist or occur only during specific moments.
- Try the controls and check whether any keyboard-and-mouse assumptions make handheld play awkward.
- Check text and interface legibility at your usual viewing distance.
- Test save and load, plus multiplayer or anti-cheat features if you need them.
- Observe battery behavior during a representative session rather than inferring it from frame rate alone.
5. Adjust settings to match your priority
If performance is close to acceptable, change one major setting at a time in the game’s graphics options or the Deck’s performance controls. That makes it easier to see which change helped and what it cost. A stable, lower frame-rate target may feel better than an unstable higher one. If battery life matters, record it under the settings and gameplay you tested rather than assuming that an FPS figure predicts it.

6. Use a Proton override only for a relevant issue
Proton is the compatibility layer that lets SteamOS run many Windows games, but it does not ensure that every game or feature works well. Another Proton version can help with a particular title-specific problem; it is not a universal fix. Check for a relevant developer notice before changing versions.
For example, a December 5, 2022 Zeepkist developer post described an analogue-input issue and recommended Proton Experimental for that game. The per-game override path is: select the game in Library, open its settings, choose Properties, then Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and select Proton Experimental. That example is specific to the reported issue, not a reason to force Experimental for other games.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
7. Make a verdict that matches your evidence
Summarize the result in terms of your requirements and the conditions you checked. For example: “works well out of the box,” “works with [named compromise],” or “not a good fit for [specific requirement].” Include the game build, Deck model, software versions, settings, and tested scenes when you report your own results. Keep other players’ observations distinct from your own testing; an unqualified claim that a game “runs perfectly” needs evidence across the relevant setup and criteria.
