Best Affordable microSD Cards for Expanding Steam Deck Storage

A reputable 512GB UHS-I card is a useful starting point for Steam Deck storage. Compare current local price per gigabyte, verify the exact SKU and seller, and format the card on the Deck.

For most Steam Deck owners, the sensible starting point is a reputable 512GB UHS-I microSD card, chosen by comparing current local prices per gigabyte—not by chasing the highest speed number on the package. Valve says any UHS-I microSD card rated class 3 or better is supported. Samsung EVO Select 512GB is one value-oriented candidate when a trusted local listing is competitively priced; PNY XLR8 Gaming is an alternative whose manufacturer explicitly names Steam Deck compatibility.

What microSD card does the Steam Deck support?

Valve’s guidance is straightforward: “Any UHS-I (class 3 or better) microSD card is supported.” All Steam Deck models support microSD expansion, according to Valve’s hardware page. In practical terms, look for a UHS-I card with a U3 or equivalent class 3 rating or better, and buy from a seller you trust.

UHS-I describes the card’s bus category; U3 and V30 are sustained-write classifications. A2 is an application-performance rating. These labels can help distinguish card capabilities, but they do not establish that one card will load Steam Deck games faster than another. No controlled Steam Deck comparison is established for the specific cards below, so do not treat their manufacturers’ maximum read or write figures as game-loading benchmarks.

Affordable cards worth comparing

There is no reliable permanent cheapest pick: local pricing, stock, seller, exact SKU, and warranty terms change. Compare reputable cards by their current total price and price per gigabyte, then choose a capacity that suits your library and budget. A 512GB card is a useful comparison point for a large library, not a requirement.

Card Manufacturer-listed details How to consider it
Samsung EVO Select 512GB Samsung lists UHS-I, U3, V30, up to 130MB/s read, and a limited 10-year warranty on its Canada product page. These are manufacturer specifications and regional warranty terms, not Steam Deck test results. The consulted page displayed “Not for sale.” A value-oriented candidate if the exact card is in stock from a trusted local seller at a competitive current price. Check that listing’s SKU and warranty; do not assume the consulted Canada page represents availability elsewhere.
PNY XLR8 Gaming microSD PNY lists Steam Deck compatibility, UHS-I, Class 10/U3/V30/A2, up to 100MB/s read and 90MB/s write, and capacities from 128GB to 512GB on its product page. These are manufacturer specifications, not Steam Deck benchmarks. An alternative with explicit manufacturer-stated Steam Deck compatibility and clearly listed ratings. Compare the capacity and current price against other reputable UHS-I options.
SanDisk Extreme microSD UHS-I SanDisk describes A2/U3/V30 versions and a product family with capacities up to 2TB on its product page. Ratings and speeds vary by capacity and specific SKU. Consider it if its current price is close to a suitable lower-cost card or you need its other capabilities. Verify the precise SKU rather than applying family-level specifications to every card.

How to choose without overspending

  1. Set a capacity target. Estimate how much space your installed library needs and what you are willing to spend. Choose the capacity that fits; 512GB is a comparison point, not a universal sweet spot.
  2. Compare today’s local price per gigabyte. Divide the total price by the advertised capacity, and compare cards in the same market. Include shipping or other unavoidable costs where relevant. A larger card may cost less per gigabyte while still costing more overall.
  3. Check the exact card and seller. Confirm the listing is a UHS-I card rated class 3 or better, and verify its precise model, seller authenticity, stock, and warranty terms for your region and purchase channel.
  4. Pay for features that matter to you. Do not pay extra solely for a higher peak-speed number or an A2 label on the assumption that it guarantees faster game loading. The listed ratings and manufacturer maximums are not direct Steam Deck performance comparisons.

One dated comparison illustrates why old prices should not decide a purchase: Geared Gaming recorded $49.98 for a PNY Elite-X 256GB on September 15, 2026. That is one price observation on that date, not a current quote or a broad market survey. Its comparison page also includes SanDisk Ultra and PNY Elite-X as lower-cost comparison options; check current local listings rather than relying on that old figure.

Format the card on the Steam Deck

Valve says Steam Deck microSD cards use ext4 with casefolding and that the Deck formats cards to the proper format; see the Steam Deck FAQ. Use the Deck’s own format function for a new card rather than preparing it elsewhere. Formatting erases data on the card, so back up anything you need before proceeding.

  1. Insert the microSD card into the Steam Deck.
  2. Open Settings > System, then choose the format option for the SD card. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm.
  3. Wait for formatting to finish before using the card. If the card contains files you need, stop and copy them elsewhere before confirming the format.

Menu labels can vary with SteamOS updates; follow the SD card formatting control shown in the Deck’s Settings if the wording differs.

What the available performance evidence does—and does not—show

The Samsung and PNY read/write figures above are manufacturer claims, not controlled Steam Deck measurements. A long-term Samsung EVO Select test reported by Digital Camera World used a 256GB card in a 2.7K dash camera, not a Steam Deck. Neither that test nor a dated retail comparison establishes comparative Steam Deck load times, reliability rates, or a present-day price winner.
