There is no single EmuDeck settings profile that makes every game run smoothly. Start with EmuDeck’s device-oriented defaults, then troubleshoot SteamOS frame pacing and make any optional changes per game. For poor performance or audio, EmuDeck’s first documented check is to turn off the frame-rate limit and set the refresh rate to 60 Hz in Game Mode.
Start with EmuDeck’s defaults, then tune individual games
EmuDeck describes itself as an installer that sets up a collection of emulators and tools. It says it does its best to optimize each emulator for the device and recommends optional per-game tweaks rather than one universal profile. Those defaults are a starting point, not a guarantee that every game will run at full speed: performance and compatibility depend on the game and the emulator or core used. EmuDeck Help

During setup, Easy Mode uses default settings while letting you choose ROM and BIOS locations and integration options. Custom Mode exposes more choices, including emulator selection, aspect ratio, shader options, controller layout, and storage location. If you are new to EmuDeck, begin with the defaults and change a setting only to address a specific problem or preference. EmuDeck installation guidance

For unexpectedly poor performance or audio quality, EmuDeck’s SteamOS troubleshooting guide recommends checking the Game Mode frame-rate limit and refresh rate first. It advises setting the limit to Off and the refresh rate to 60 Hz. This is a diagnostic recommendation, not a measured promise of higher frame rates or smoother performance in every game. If you want the adjustment to apply only to the game currently open, enable Use per-game profile in the performance controls. Menu names or locations can vary with SteamOS releases and device models, so follow the closest matching labels on your system if they have changed.
Know which settings affect performance and which affect appearance
EmuDeck Quick Settings include options for RetroArch autosave, controller layout behavior, CloudSync, bezels, system aspect ratios, and LCD or CRT shaders. These mostly control convenience or presentation: bezels can fill otherwise empty space around a vertical game, aspect ratio affects how a system’s image is displayed, and shaders change its look. The documentation does not present these choices as universal performance boosts. EmuDeck Quick Settings

- For frame pacing: use the SteamOS frame-rate and refresh-rate check above; the documentation does not quantify its performance effect.
- For image shape: choose the aspect ratio that suits the system and your preference.
- For borders or image effects: use bezels or shaders when you want those visual changes, not as a general speed fix.
- For convenience: choose autosave, CloudSync, and controller behavior to suit how you play.
Check the emulator, core, and controller profile
Some systems can run through different emulators or RetroArch cores, and their options are not interchangeable. For example, EmuDeck’s FAQ names standalone DuckStation, SwanStation, and Beetle PSX for PlayStation emulation. Steam ROM Manager parsers let you choose which entries to enable, so identify the emulator or core a particular game uses before changing its settings. EmuDeck FAQ

Controls can also depend on the Steam Input profile. EmuDeck supplies profiles for selected emulators; for an emulator without a supplied profile, its FAQ recommends Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad. Profiles enable certain emulator functions, including screen switching in some cases. If controls are broken or an emulator feature is unavailable, check the selected profile for that game in Game Mode before treating the issue as a performance problem. EmuDeck FAQ

Update or reset an emulator before trying speculative tweaks
EmuDeck’s troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping emulators current. On SteamOS, update Flatpaks through Discover, AppImages or binaries through the emulator’s updater or EmuDeck, and Windows executables through EmuDeck. It also advises installing system-library updates offered in Discover, since outdated libraries can prevent Flatpak emulators from working. EmuDeck SteamOS troubleshooting
In Manage Emulators, you can update emulators and tools, apply EmuDeck settings updates when configuration fixes or optimizations are available, and update or reset an individual emulator’s configuration. If a change was accidental or the configuration appears corrupted, resetting that emulator to EmuDeck’s configuration is a documented recovery option.

Verify play mode and game files if a title will not launch
EmuDeck generally recommends playing ROMs in Game Mode. In Desktop Mode, hold Start for three seconds to switch the controller configuration to gamepad mode. If a game still fails to launch, check that its ROM and any required BIOS files are complete and were transferred correctly; faulty or incomplete files are among the causes identified in EmuDeck’s troubleshooting guide. What the recommended settings do—and do not establish
EmuDeck’s published guidance supplies a practical first troubleshooting check, but it does not give benchmark results comparing a universal settings profile or quantify an FPS gain from changing the frame-rate limit or refresh rate. Treat the 60 Hz and limit-off recommendation as a diagnostic step, then assess the specific game and emulator rather than assuming one setting suits every setup. EmuDeck SteamOS troubleshooting
