Open the Pause Menu > Settings to adjust GTAV settings in Story Mode or GTA Online. From there, use the Controls, Camera, or Display category to find the relevant option. The exact labels and available choices can vary by platform and edition.
Open Settings in GTA Online
Rockstar says GTAV settings can be changed from the Pause Menu in either Story Mode or Online. Pause the game, select Settings, then choose the category related to what you want to change. Rockstar’s menu guidance identifies categories including Controls, Camera, and Display, but does not provide a complete list of options for every platform or edition. Rockstar’s settings instructions were last updated April 20, 2024.

Change camera perspective
To switch perspective during play, use the default first-person toggle for your platform:
Recommended Free Tools
- PC: V
- PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4: Touchpad
- Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One: Select
These are Rockstar’s listed defaults, not a guarantee for a customized control layout. If the input does not work, check Controls for your assigned camera or perspective control. Rockstar lists first-person perspective switching for these platforms; available choices can still differ by edition.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes the complete grand Theft Auto V story experience
Find vehicle controls
The control display changes according to whether your character is on foot or in a vehicle. If Settings shows on-foot controls while you are trying to adjust driving, get into a vehicle first, then open Pause Menu > Settings and view the controls. Rockstar’s vehicle-control instructions, last updated February 29, 2024, also warn that changing controls in a vehicle affects on-foot controls, and changing them on foot affects vehicle controls.
Understand changing aim settings in Online
If your aim preference seems to change between sessions, check where the session’s setting came from. Rockstar says GTA Online imports aim preferences from Story Mode when an Online session starts. Joining another player’s lobby can also make your settings default to the host’s selection.
Rank #2
- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
To modify the aim setting, go offline and change it there. Rockstar also suggests creating lobbies to avoid aim settings changing when joining multiplayer lobbies. See Rockstar’s explanation of GTA Online aim settings, last updated March 8, 2024.

Rank #3
- Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the Xbox One.
- Explore the City of Los Santos, the countryside and even the ocean.
- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
- Safezone Size: Adjusts how interface content sits near the screen edges. Use it if text or interface elements are cut off on your television or display.
- Measurement System: Switches between Metric and Imperial units, including the units shown for map distances. Rockstar says this setting saves automatically.
If the minimap shows miles but you prefer kilometers, change Measurement System to Metric. If interface content is clipped at the sides, adjust Safezone Size instead. The available labels or controls may differ across editions and platforms.
