You do not need a diagnosis or medical details to make an adjustment. Treat access as ordinary table planning, and let the player decide what help they want.
Start with a private, practical conversation
Ask each player what would help them participate, preferably in a private conversation or an optional anonymous form. Keep the question open-ended: for example, “Is there anything about the space, schedule, communication, or game materials you’d like us to plan around?” Make clear that answering is optional and that no one needs to explain a diagnosis.

The 2024 D&D Basic Rules advise groups to consider accessibility needs when choosing a place to play. They identify low light, background music, strong odors, cramped spaces, and allergens as possible concerns. Share relevant logistics in advance—venue access, seating, lighting, noise, scents, session length, breaks, and whether remote participation is possible—so players can decide what works for them.

A one-shot can be a low-pressure way for a new group to try the game together; the Basic Rules describe a single-session game as an option for new groups. Before play, also agree on boundaries for sensitive material and a simple way to signal a pause or change. D&D’s rules describe options including an anonymous list, a gesture, a phrase, or a designated object. Choose a signal everyone can use without having to explain themselves in the moment.

Make access part of how the session runs
Accommodations are individual choices, not a checklist to impose. Offer possibilities, ask what is useful, and respect a player’s answer. The practical examples below are suggestions drawn from Tabletop RPG Authority’s overview of tabletop RPG accessibility; they are not universal prescriptions.
- Time and pacing: Ask whether breaks, a shorter session, predictable timing, or slower transitions would help.
- Rules and information: Offer brief recaps, read-aloud rules, written participation, or a shared rules-lookup role. Check before reading a player’s character sheet aloud or taking over one of their tasks.
- Maps and positioning: If maps or miniatures are difficult to use, ask whether verbal descriptions, a simpler map, a tactile aid, or another approach would work. Theater-of-the-mind play and tactile maps can help some players, but neither suits everyone.
- Communication: Let players contribute in the way that works for them, including speaking or text where the setup allows. Do not assume a player must explain a pause or access need while everyone is watching.
Choose materials with the player, not for them
The official rules say character information can be kept on plain paper and mention official, fan-made, and digital character sheets; digital dice rollers are another option. These formats provide choices, not a guarantee that a particular sheet, app, or input method will work with a player’s assistive technology. Ask which format is readable and usable, how the player prefers to update it, and whether they want help. Keep the player in control of their character and materials.

When comparing play aids, consider readability, input method, compatibility with assistive technology, cognitive load, and ease of updating. The reviewed sources do not provide comparative product testing, so test the actual tool with the player rather than assuming a format is accessible by design.
Decide whether in-person, online, or hybrid play works best
D&D’s official rules recognize online play as an option. Remote play may reduce barriers related to travel or physical access, but it can add technology demands. A virtual tabletop is not automatically accessible just because it is online: check the actual platform, character sheet, audio or text communication, and any assistive technology the player uses.

- Dragon of Icespire Peak—an adventure for characters levels 1–6
- Rulebook—includes guide to creating characters and all the rules you need to play
- Dungeon Master’s screen
- Fold-out poster map, 6 blank character sheets, and 11 polyhedral dice
- 81 cards describing magic items, sidekicks, and more
For example, Open Dungeons Publishing’s accessibility statement, last updated August 8, 2026, describes accessibility work on that project’s own site and notes that its PDFs may not yet be fully accessible. It is a project-specific example, not evidence about D&D Beyond or other platforms. Whether play is in person, remote, or hybrid, decide with the player based on the barriers the setup removes or introduces, their preferences, and the group’s ability to maintain the arrangement.
Check in as needs or the campaign change
Access needs and preferences can change over time. The 2024 Basic Rules recommend revisiting limits when new people join or the story changes, and checking in every few sessions. A brief, private “Is this setup still working for you?” gives players a chance to request a change without requiring a public explanation. If an arrangement stops working, adjust it together rather than treating the original plan as permanent.
