The safest way to update a GIGABYTE motherboard BIOS is to use the board’s own Q-Flash procedure with the exact BIOS file for its model and revision. Check the support page and manual for that specific board, prepare a correctly formatted USB flash drive, keep power stable, and do not interrupt the update. If the board supports Q-Flash Plus, you may be able to flash from the shutdown state without a CPU, memory, or graphics card. Windows-based @BIOS is available only on some models and adds operating-system and network dependencies.
BIOS flashing can repair compatibility problems, add processor support, or address firmware bugs, but it is not a routine maintenance task. GIGABYTE’s manuals warn: “Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, please do it with caution. Inadequate BIOS flashing may result in system malfunction.”

Before you download anything
A BIOS file is not interchangeable just because two GIGABYTE boards have similar names. The model name and hardware revision must match. A file for one revision or chipset variant can be rejected, or worse, leave the board unable to boot.
Find the exact model and revision
- Read the model name printed directly on the motherboard, usually near the PCIe slots, memory sockets, or the board edge.
- Look for a revision marking such as “Rev. 1.0” or “Rev. 1.1.” It may be printed near the model label or on the board’s corner.
- If the computer still starts, confirm the model in the BIOS information screen or in your operating system’s system-information utility. Treat that as a cross-check, not a substitute for the board’s printed revision.
- Open GIGABYTE’s support page for that exact product and revision. Download only the BIOS listed for that page, and read any installation notes or prerequisite requirements shown with the release.
BIOS listings change. Do not rely on a version number remembered from an older guide or assume that the newest file for a similarly named board is correct. The board-specific support page and manual are the authority for the available version and procedure.

Decide whether an update is justified
Update when the release addresses a problem you have, adds support for hardware you intend to install, or includes a security or stability fix relevant to your system. If the computer is stable and the release offers no benefit for your configuration, postponing the flash removes unnecessary risk. A BIOS update does not automatically improve gaming performance.
Choose the right GIGABYTE flashing method
GIGABYTE uses several names for firmware tools. Availability differs by motherboard generation and model, so use the method documented for your board rather than assuming every option is present.
| Method | Where it runs | Can it work without CPU, memory, or graphics card? | Main dependencies | Important model-specific details |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q-Flash | BIOS or the POST environment | No. The board must reach the required BIOS/POST interface. | Matching BIOS file, compatible USB filesystem, stable power | The cited AM4 procedure uses FAT32 or FAT16. The exact entry path and supported filesystems come from the board manual. |
| Q-Flash Plus | Dedicated rear-I/O USB port and physical button while the system is shut down (S5) | On supported designs, yes. The cited B760M example can flash without an installed CPU, memory, or graphics card. | Dedicated port, button, power cabling, matching file, and required filename | The cited Q-Flash Plus instructions require a FAT32, FAT16, or FAT12 drive and renaming the file to GIGABYTE.bin. Other GIGABYTE pages may show lowercase gigabyte.bin; follow your manual exactly. |
| @BIOS | Windows | No | Working Windows installation, supported utility, stable power, and, for internet updates, a stable connection | Documented on some H510 materials, not universal. A wrong file or an interrupted Windows flash can prevent booting. |
Q-Flash Plus is not simply a faster version of Q-Flash: it is a separate hardware feature. Look for the labeled button and dedicated USB port on the rear I/O panel or in the board manual. If they are absent, use the ordinary Q-Flash or another method explicitly supported by the model.
Prepare a safe BIOS update
Use reliable power
Connect the computer to a stable mains supply. A UPS is useful where power interruptions are common, but it does not make an incompatible BIOS file safe. Do not begin during a storm, while moving the computer, or when a loose power cable is likely to be disturbed. Once the flash starts, do not press the reset button, hold the power button, switch off the power supply, or unplug the system.
Make a record of current settings
Photograph or write down settings that you may need to restore, including boot mode, storage-controller mode, memory profile, fan curves, virtualization settings, and custom security options. Keep your operating-system recovery key available if your configuration uses device encryption. A firmware update can return settings to defaults, and the manuals recommend loading optimized defaults after the update before reviewing custom settings.

Prepare the USB flash drive
Use a USB flash drive that the board can read and format it with the filesystem specified by the manual. The cited ordinary Q-Flash procedure uses FAT32 or FAT16. The cited Q-Flash Plus procedure accepts FAT32, FAT16, or FAT12. Do not assume that a filesystem accepted by one model works on another.
- Copy the downloaded BIOS archive to a working computer.
- Extract the archive; do not leave the BIOS file inside the compressed ZIP file.
- Read the included instructions and identify the actual BIOS image file.
- Format the USB drive using the filesystem required by your board. Formatting erases that drive, so copy off any other files first.
- Place the BIOS file in the root of the drive, not several folders deep.
- For Q-Flash Plus, rename the file only when the manual says to do so. The cited manual specifies
GIGABYTE.bin; some GIGABYTE feature pages use lowercasegigabyte.bin. Spelling and capitalization can matter.
Do not add multiple BIOS versions to the drive. Keeping one clearly identified file makes it less likely that the wrong image will be selected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to update with ordinary Q-Flash
Use this route when the board can start into BIOS or POST and the manual lists Q-Flash. The labels and key used to enter it can vary, so treat the following as the sequence to follow while checking your model’s screen prompts.
- Shut down the computer completely and insert the prepared USB flash drive into a motherboard USB port. If the manual identifies a preferred port, use it.
- Start the computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup or POST Q-Flash entry shown by the board. GIGABYTE boards commonly expose Q-Flash from the firmware interface, but the exact key and menu placement are model-dependent.
- Open Q-Flash and choose the option to update the BIOS from a storage device.
- Select the BIOS file that matches the exact model and revision. Verify the name shown on-screen before confirming.
- Accept the warning and start the update only after confirming that the file, board, and revision agree.
- Wait while the firmware is read, erased, written, and verified. The display may restart or remain on a progress screen. Do not turn off or restart the system and do not remove the USB drive while the BIOS is being read or updated.
- When Q-Flash reports completion and the board restarts, enter setup again rather than immediately changing overclocking or memory settings.
Some boards reset several times while training memory or applying the new firmware. A temporary blank display is not, by itself, proof of failure. Treat an on-screen error, an unending loop, or an absence of the board’s documented completion indication as a reason to follow the troubleshooting section below—not as a reason to interrupt power during the programmed update.
How to use Q-Flash Plus
Q-Flash Plus is available only on boards equipped with that feature. It is intended for situations such as installing a processor that the original BIOS does not support, because supported designs can update while the system is in the S5 shutdown state and without CPU, memory, or graphics hardware installed.

Prepare the board
- Confirm in the exact manual that the board has Q-Flash Plus and identify its dedicated USB port and physical button.
- Install the motherboard in a safe position or in the chassis, connect the power supply cables required by the manual, and leave the system shut down. Do not press the normal case power button unless the instructions specifically require it.
- Prepare the drive using the filesystem and filename specified for that model. In the cited Q-Flash Plus manual, the drive may be FAT32, FAT16, or FAT12 and the image must be renamed
GIGABYTE.bin. A different model may specify a different spelling.
Start and monitor the flash
- Insert the drive into the labeled Q-Flash Plus USB port, not an arbitrary rear USB socket.
- Turn on the power supply while leaving the computer in the required shutdown state.
- Press the Q-Flash Plus button for the interval specified by the manual. The board’s indicator LED should show that it found a matching image and is programming it.
- Leave the system untouched while the LED flashes. Do not remove the drive, disconnect power, press reset, or press the button again.
- On the cited design, the process is considered finished when the LEDs stop, and the manual tells the reader to allow about 6–8 minutes. That duration applies to that documented procedure, not to every GIGABYTE board.
- After the board’s completion indication, switch off the power supply if the manual directs you to do so, install the remaining hardware, and boot into setup.
A blinking LED does not mean that the board is waiting for another button press. It normally indicates that the process is in progress; use the manual’s completion behavior as the stopping point.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Should you use @BIOS in Windows?
@BIOS is a Windows utility documented for some GIGABYTE models, including material for an H510 series. It can offer an internet-based update path, but it introduces more variables than a firmware-level flash: Windows must remain stable, applications can interfere, and a network download can fail.
Choose it only when the exact board manual and support page confirm that @BIOS is supported and explain the procedure. Before starting:
- Close other applications and disable activities that could restart or suspend the computer.
- Use a stable internet connection if selecting an internet update.
- Confirm the utility has selected the BIOS for the exact model and revision.
- Keep the system connected to stable power and do not shut down or remove power during the update.
The H510 manual warns that choosing a wrong file could prevent the computer from booting. If you can use Q-Flash, many users prefer the firmware-level method because it avoids dependence on a running Windows installation and network download.
What to do immediately after the flash
- Enter the BIOS setup after the first successful restart.
- Choose the command to load optimized BIOS defaults, as recommended in GIGABYTE’s manuals. This lets the updated firmware re-detect peripheral devices.
- Save the defaults and restart once.
- Confirm that the system reaches the expected boot device and that storage drives, USB devices, memory capacity, and processor information are detected.
- Reapply only the settings you recorded earlier, one group at a time. Start with essential settings such as the correct boot mode or storage-controller mode, then test a normal boot before changing performance options.
- After Windows starts, check that device drivers and applications behave normally. Run a short stability check before relying on a new overclock or aggressive memory profile.
Do not assume that a BIOS update preserves a custom fan curve, boot order, memory profile, or virtualization setting. Verify each item rather than copying every old value blindly; firmware defaults may have changed for compatibility reasons.

The utility rejects the file
- Stop and recheck the full motherboard model and revision printed on the board.
- Download the file again from that product’s GIGABYTE support page and extract it anew.
- Confirm that the USB drive uses the filesystem required by that method.
- For Q-Flash Plus, check the dedicated port and the exact filename, including capitalization.
- Remove other BIOS files from the drive and retry only after the manual confirms the corrected setup.
The progress indicator is still active
Do not interrupt a flash merely because it appears slow. The documented Q-Flash Plus example specifies a 6–8 minute wait, but timing varies by board and procedure. If the indicator remains active far beyond the manual’s stated behavior, consult the model’s support instructions from another device before touching power.
The first restart shows no picture
Allow the board the full time specified for its post-update restart and memory training. If it eventually reaches setup, load optimized defaults, save, and test again. If it does not, remove external USB devices, disconnect nonessential peripherals, and follow the board manual’s clear-CMOS or recovery instructions. Do not assume that clearing CMOS rewrites a damaged BIOS; it only resets settings.
Use a recovery feature only when the board has it
Some GIGABYTE boards include DualBIOS, with a main and backup BIOS. The H510 manual describes the backup taking over on a later boot when the main BIOS is corrupted or damaged. Other boards do not have DualBIOS, and a backup BIOS is not a universal guarantee of recovery.
Q-Flash Plus can provide a recovery route on supported models, but it requires the correct dedicated port, filename, filesystem, and power connections. If the board lacks Q-Flash Plus or DualBIOS, do not improvise a procedure from another model. Contact GIGABYTE support or an authorized repair service with the exact model, revision, attempted BIOS version, LED behavior, and any on-screen message.

Questions readers commonly ask
Can I update a GIGABYTE BIOS with no CPU installed?
Only if the exact motherboard supports Q-Flash Plus and its manual says that configuration is allowed. Ordinary Q-Flash requires the board to reach its BIOS or POST environment. The cited B760M Q-Flash Plus procedure supports flashing without a CPU, memory, or graphics card, but that capability should not be generalized to other models.

Can I use any USB port?
For ordinary Q-Flash, follow the manual’s supported USB guidance. Q-Flash Plus requires the specifically labeled dedicated port; another port may not be monitored for the recovery image.
Does every GIGABYTE board have a backup BIOS?
No. DualBIOS is model-dependent. Check the board’s manual for a main-and-backup design before relying on automatic recovery.
Will a BIOS update delete my files?
The firmware flash does not intentionally erase the operating-system files on your storage drive, but it can reset firmware settings such as boot mode or storage configuration. Record those settings and load optimized defaults after the update, then verify the correct boot device.

Is the newest BIOS always the best choice?
The newest listed release is not automatically necessary. Select the release that applies to your exact model and revision and review its notes for relevant fixes, hardware support, and prerequisites. If your system is stable and the release does not address your needs, delaying the flash avoids an unnecessary firmware change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a BIOS update be reversed?
Only when the exact board’s firmware utility and support documentation permit a rollback. Never install an older image merely because it has a familiar version number; verify rollback support and any required transition version first.
What information should I give support after a failed flash?
Provide the complete motherboard model and revision, BIOS version attempted, flashing method, USB filesystem and filename used, LED behavior, screen messages, and whether the board reaches POST. This lets support distinguish an incorrect image from a power or hardware problem.
