Fix PlayStation Cloud Storage errors on PS5
The sequence below follows PlayStation’s guidance for CE-118851-4 and ordinary PS5 cloud synchronization. Stop when the sync succeeds; manual transfers are not necessary if the status returns to Synced.
1. Check the affected game’s sync status
- Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Check Sync Status of Saved Data.
You can reach the same status view through Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data > View Sync Status. If the same error affects more than one title, open the saved-data sync settings and turn Enable Auto-Sync off. Wait a moment, then turn it back on. PlayStation specifically recommends this toggle reset when the error occurs across multiple games. Check Sync Status again for each affected title. This is a settings reset, not a request to erase local or cloud saves.
4. Change automatic login when the error returns after a restart
If every game reports Synced but the error reappears after you restart the console, turn off automatic PS5 login:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Users and Accounts.
- Open Login Settings.
- Turn off Log In to PS5 Automatically.
Restart the PS5 and check the saved-data status again. This step is specifically for the recurring pattern in which the console shows Synced before rebooting but reports the error afterward. It is not a reason to change the login setting when only the Rockstar wording appears in GTA Online.
5. Make sure Rest Mode can maintain the connection

- For a native PS5 game, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data and check Auto-Sync Saved Data.
- For a PS4 game running on PS5, open the corresponding Saved Data (PS4) section and check Auto-Upload.
The labels are not interchangeable. A PS4 title uses the PS4 Auto-Upload setting even when you play it on a PS5. If the console is fully powered off rather than placed in Rest Mode, background syncing cannot use that Rest Mode connection.
6. Recheck the account and subscription prerequisites
PlayStation Cloud Storage requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription and the same PlayStation Network account that owns the cloud data. If another account is signed in, its cloud saves will not appear as the expected files. Confirm the account before attempting a transfer. A subscription requirement explains why cloud storage is unavailable, but it does not by itself explain a specific CE-118851-4 occurrence.
7. Use a simple decision path
For one affected game, use its Options menu and retry the sync. For several affected games, reset Enable Auto-Sync and confirm Rest Mode connectivity. If all games show Synced and the error returns only after rebooting, apply the automatic-login step. If none of those branches changes the result, stop repeating the same actions and contact PlayStation Support with the error code and the affected titles.

The console’s treatment of a save depends on whether the game is a PS5 version or a PS4 version. This distinction explains why a cloud copy can exist while a PS4 game still needs a separate download step.

Do not assume that seeing a PS4 save in Cloud Storage means it has already been placed on the console. Use the PS4 saved-data download command when you need to restore it locally. Conversely, do not treat the separate PS4 download requirement as evidence that PlayStation Cloud Storage is broken.
PlayStation Cloud Storage limits
PlayStation’s support guidance lists capacity of up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data for PlayStation Cloud Storage. It also lists a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are service limits, not explanations for a particular error; reaching a limit and receiving CE-118851-4 are separate situations. The limits apply to the cloud-storage service, not to the size of your PS5’s internal storage.
Upload or download manually without overwriting the newest save
Manual transfer is useful when automatic sync is disabled or when you need to restore a known-good copy. It is also the point at which an incorrect choice can overwrite progress, so compare the timestamps and progress on both copies first. If you cannot tell which copy is newer, do not confirm an overwrite; contact support or preserve the available copies before making a decision.
From the game tile
- Highlight the game on the home screen and press Options.
- Select Upload/Download Saved Data.
- Choose whether to upload the console copy to Cloud Storage or download the cloud copy to the console.
- Review the listed dates and select the copy you know is newer.
- Confirm the transfer and wait for it to complete before closing the game.
An upload replaces the cloud copy with the selected console data, while a download replaces or restores the console-side copy with the selected cloud data. That is why the date and progress check comes before confirmation, not after it.

Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then select either Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4). The PS5 and PS4 sections provide upload-from-console and download-from-cloud controls. Choose the platform that matches the game; selecting the wrong section can make the expected save appear to be missing.
When a USB drive helps—and when it does not
PlayStation supports copying PS4 saved data to USB as a backup or transfer route. A USB copy does not repair a PS5 Cloud Storage synchronization error and does not replace PlayStation Plus Cloud Storage. Do not buy a drive, network cable, storage expansion, or controller as a presumed fix for a settings or service-side sync problem. Hardware is not a substitute for identifying whether the failed service is PlayStation Cloud Storage or Rockstar’s online character-save retrieval.
Fix the specific GTA Online Rockstar cloud-server alert
Rockstar’s article, last updated June 14, 2024, describes the alert exactly as: “Your save data could not be loaded from the Rockstar cloud servers at this time. Returning to Grand Theft Auto V”. Rockstar says the problem occurs when the latest GTA Online character save cannot be retrieved and should resolve on its own.
First response: leave the game and retry later
Return to Grand Theft Auto V as prompted, then try GTA Online again after a short wait. This alert is about Rockstar’s retrieval of the online character save, not the PS5’s PlayStation Cloud Storage queue. Toggling PS5 Auto-Sync will not directly repair a Rockstar-server retrieval problem. Avoid deleting anything during this first response, because the documented first expectation is that the retrieval issue resolves without file removal.
If the same alert continues
Rockstar’s documented follow-up uses the console’s application-data management screens. Follow it only when the exact alert above is displayed and you can distinguish game data from saved data:
- Open Application Saved Data Management.
- Select System Storage, Online Storage, or USB Storage, depending on where the relevant data is listed.
- Choose Delete.
- Select Grand Theft Auto V.
- Select the game data files.
- Do not select save files. Rockstar’s instruction is explicitly “NOT save files.”
- Confirm the deletion.
- Restart the game while holding L1 + R1.
Do not generalize this procedure to a PlayStation CE-118851-4 message, another Rockstar error, or a situation in which you cannot identify the listed files with confidence. Deleting saved data can remove progress. If the menus do not match, stop and contact Rockstar Support with the exact alert and your platform. That timestamp is only a snapshot; it cannot rule out a later outage or a regional interruption. If the status page shows an incident, wait for recovery before deleting files or repeatedly changing settings. If both services are operational and only one game has a PlayStation sync error, return to that title’s Sync Status rather than assuming a broad outage.

Only one PlayStation game fails to sync
Use Options > Check Sync Status of Saved Data for that title and select Try Again if available. Do not reset every account setting or delete local data when the problem is isolated to one game.

Download it manually from the Saved Data (PS4) section to PS5 console storage. PS4 saves do not follow the same automatic console-side behavior as native PS5 saves.
GTA Online returns to Grand Theft Auto V with the Rockstar wording
