To update a DayZ dedicated server, stop it, back up its configuration and persistence data, run SteamCMD against the existing server directory, update every required Workshop mod, then restart with the same configuration and launch parameters. Stable and experimental use different Steam app IDs, and the server and connecting clients must stay on the same branch.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What a DayZ server update actually changes
A DayZ update has two separate parts:
- Server files: the executable and official data downloaded through SteamCMD.
- Workshop content: the mods your server loads. Mods are maintained separately, so updating the game files does not automatically guarantee that every required mod is current or correctly installed.
Your configuration and world state normally live beside those files. The update procedure should therefore preserve serverDZ.cfg, launch scripts, profile and log folders, and persistence data while replacing only the files that need updating. Backing up those items before an update is prudent operational practice; the official SteamCMD instructions document the update commands but do not impose one universal backup policy.

Before you touch the server
Confirm the branch you intend to run
Bohemia Interactive’s documented Linux commands use app ID 223350 for the stable DayZ server and 1042420 for the experimental branch. Choose one and use it consistently for the server, its mods and every client that will connect. A server updated to experimental will not be compatible with clients still on stable, and the reverse is also true.
| Branch | Steam app ID in the documented commands | Client requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Stable | 223350 |
Clients must use the stable branch |
| Experimental | 1042420 |
Clients must use the experimental branch |
The IDs are identifiers, not performance measurements. Do not infer a current patch number from them; SteamCMD retrieves the current build available for that branch.

Record how the server is launched
Before stopping the process, copy the complete launch command or the script, service unit or scheduled task that invokes it. Record the executable location, -config argument, profile path, game and query ports, mod parameters and any other switches. This gives you a known-good restart command after the files are replaced.
Make a restorable backup
Stop the server cleanly, then copy these items to storage outside the live server directory:

serverDZ.cfg(or the file named by your-configargument).- Launch scripts, PowerShell files, service definitions and scheduled-task settings.
- Profile and log directories, if you need them for diagnosis or administration.
- Persistence data and any other folder that represents the live world state.
Keep the backup until players have connected successfully and the world is loading normally. A backup is useful only if you know which directory it came from and can restore it without overwriting a newer save.
Check the practical prerequisites
- Use an account with permission to write to the server directory.
- Verify that the machine has enough free disk space for a download and temporary files.
- Have the Steam credentials required by your installation available.
- Plan downtime: the process requires a stopped server and a restart.
- If you operate on Linux, use the distribution’s SteamCMD prerequisites and run SteamCMD as a normal user rather than root, as Bohemia’s guide recommends.
Update a DayZ server on Linux with SteamCMD
1. Stop the running process
Stop the systemd service, daemon, screen/tmux session or shell script that owns the DayZ process. Confirm that no server process is still writing persistence data before you copy the backup. Keep the launch command visible; you will reuse its -config, ports and other parameters after the update.
2. Run the update command in the existing installation
Bohemia’s Linux guide states that updating uses the same commands as installation. Point +force_install_dir at the directory that already contains your server and use the app ID for the branch you selected:
~/servers/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/servers/dayz-server/ +login your_login +app_update 223350 +quit
That command updates the stable branch. For experimental, replace 223350 with 1042420:
Recommended Free Tools
~/servers/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/servers/dayz-server/ +login your_login +app_update 1042420 +quit
Run the command from the account that owns the server files. +force_install_dir must match the real installation path; a typo can make SteamCMD target a different directory or fail before downloading. Let SteamCMD finish and read its final status rather than assuming that a partially displayed download succeeded.
3. Update Workshop mods in the same maintenance window
For each required Workshop item, use SteamCMD’s Workshop download command with the DayZ Workshop app ID and that item’s Workshop ID:
+workshop_download_item 221100 <workshop-id>
Bohemia’s example uses 221100 for the DayZ Workshop application. Repeat the command for every mod your launch configuration requires. Keep a list of IDs so a later update cannot silently omit one.
Downloading an item is not the final step. The Linux procedure also recreates links in the server root and copies the mod’s key files into the server’s keys directory. If your update script performs those operations, run it after the downloads. If you do them manually, check that every mod directory referenced by the launch command points to the newly downloaded content and that its .bikey files are present under keys.

Do not replace serverDZ.cfg or persistence data with a fresh installation copy. Refresh only the mod links and authentication keys needed by the updated Workshop files. This keeps gameplay settings and world state separate from the files SteamCMD manages.
5. Restart with the recorded command
Start the server using the same executable, ports, profile path and configuration argument you recorded earlier. The configuration page defines which file is used through the -config launch option; if the argument names serverDZ.cfg, that file must exist at the path expected by the launch command. A server can appear to start while loading an unintended configuration if the path or filename changed.
Update a DayZ server on Windows with Server_manager.ps1
Bohemia provides Server_manager.ps1, a PowerShell utility for downloading and managing DayZ server and mod data. The documentation lists PowerShell V4 or newer and support for Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012 R2 or newer.
1. Stop the server and back up its data
Stop the process or service that runs DayZ, save its launch configuration and copy the configuration, scripts, profiles, logs and persistence data to a separate backup location. Do not run the update while the server is actively writing its world state.

Select the branch explicitly when needed. The documented experimental form is:

.[Server_manager.ps1[ -update server -app exp
Use the stable setting when you intend to remain on stable. The manager’s branch switch and Steam app ID must agree with the branch used by your clients.
3. Update the mods
Use the manager’s mod operation after the server update. The utility documents -update mod for mod data. If you want both server and mods updated in one operation, use:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches.[Server_manager.ps1[ -u all
Check the script output for each item. A successful server download does not prove that every Workshop mod was downloaded, linked or supplied with valid keys.
4. Update and start in one managed operation (optional)
The documentation also shows -u all -s start -lp user to update the server and mods, then start using a user launch configuration. Use this only when that launch configuration already contains the correct -config filename, ports, profile path and mod list. Otherwise, update first, inspect the files, and start with your existing command so a manager preset cannot change an important parameter unexpectedly.
Make sure Workshop mods are really ready
Mods are a common reason an apparently successful game update fails at startup. Treat them as a separate checklist:
- List every mod in the launch configuration and record its Workshop ID.
- Download or update each item with SteamCMD or the Windows manager.
- Recreate the server-root links or directories that your setup uses.
- Copy the corresponding
.bikeyfiles into the server’skeysdirectory. - Compare the resulting paths with the paths in the launch command.
- Start the server and inspect the first log entries for a missing directory, key or dependency.
If a mod worked before the DayZ update but now produces startup errors, redownload that Workshop item, recreate its link and verify its keys before changing unrelated configuration. If the error remains, temporarily remove that mod from the launch list to determine whether the base server starts cleanly; restore it only after obtaining a compatible version.

Use the correct configuration file
Start with the same -config=... argument used before the update (or your intentionally changed configuration). The actual filename is supplied by that launch option, not chosen automatically by the executable. Verify the file path and spelling before troubleshooting anything else.
Check the logs before inviting players back
Watch the server’s profile and log directories during startup. Look for a clean bind to the configured ports, successful mod loading and the absence of missing-key or missing-path errors. Keep the pre-update logs so you can distinguish a new failure from a warning that was already present.

Test from a client on the same branch
Connect with a client using the same stable or experimental branch as the server and the same required mod set. Confirm that the server appears, the client completes the mod handshake and a character can enter the world. A local connection test can establish that the process is running; a remote test also checks the advertised query and game ports.
Check visibility and query settings
If the process is running but the server is invisible, review the configured game and query ports and the configuration file loaded by -config. Bohemia’s server-configuration documentation identifies steamQueryPort as the setting used for Steam server queries. Check that the value in the active configuration matches the port allowed by your firewall and the port expected by your hosting or network setup.
Stable versus experimental: avoid a mixed installation
The stable and experimental server builds are separate Steam applications in the documented commands. Select the branch before updating, not after a failed connection. A common failure pattern is a stable server with an experimental client, or an experimental server whose mods were downloaded for a different branch. Keep a note of the selected app ID in your update script and in your client-maintenance instructions.
When switching branches deliberately, stop the server, back up the current state, update with the other app ID, refresh the required mods and test before allowing normal traffic. Do not assume that a branch switch is equivalent to a small patch update; treat it as a change that deserves a rollback copy.
Automate recurring updates without losing control
Linux scripts and daemons
Bohemia’s Linux guide shows a daemon/update-script pattern that runs SteamCMD and then refreshes mod symlinks and keys. A safe script should perform the operations in this order:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Stop the DayZ process and wait for it to exit.
- Create a timestamped backup of configuration and persistence data.
- Run SteamCMD with the fixed installation directory and selected app ID.
- Download each required Workshop item.
- Recreate links and copy keys.
- Start the server with the recorded configuration and launch parameters.
- Write SteamCMD and startup output to logs that can be reviewed after an unattended run.
Run the automation as the normal server user. Keep the app ID and mod list in one clearly documented place so a future branch change cannot update the server and clients inconsistently.
Windows scheduled maintenance
On Windows, a scheduled task can invoke the PowerShell manager, but the task must run under an account that can write to the installation and backup locations. Test the command interactively first, then schedule it during a maintenance window. Preserve the script output and verify that the task updates both the server and mods when you use -u all.
Troubleshooting by symptom
SteamCMD reports a login or directory error
- Check the credentials supplied to
+loginand confirm that the account can access the server files. - Verify the exact spelling and trailing slash of
+force_install_dir. - Confirm that the normal server user owns or can write to the directory.
- Check available disk space before retrying.
Do not redirect the update to a new directory unless you intentionally want a second installation. Updating the existing directory preserves the paths used by your launch script and mod links.

The server starts on the wrong build
Confirm the app ID used by SteamCMD and the branch selected on the client. Stable uses 223350 in the documented Linux command; experimental uses 1042420. Then verify that the restart command points to the directory you actually updated.
Mod startup errors appear after the game update
Redownload the affected Workshop item, recreate its server-root link and make sure its .bikey files are in keys. Check the mod path in the launch command for case and spelling errors. If the base server starts when the mod is removed, the mod or one of its dependencies needs an update or temporary removal.
The server process runs but nobody can see it
Inspect the active -config file, the configured game and query ports and firewall rules. Pay particular attention to steamQueryPort; a mismatch can prevent listing even when the game process is healthy. Test from the same network and from an external client to separate local-discovery problems from internet reachability problems.
The server will not start after you restore files
Stop it again and compare the restored configuration, profile path, mod links and keys with the pre-update backup. Restore only the files you know were changed, rather than replacing the entire installation and accidentally discarding a newer persistence file. Use the first startup error in the log as the starting point; later errors can be consequences of that initial failure.
What not to use
Do not use the retired HLDSUpdateTool for a modern Steam DayZ dedicated server. Steam Support states that SteamCMD replaced it for Steam game servers. SteamCMD is the supported downloader and updater, and both the Linux command-line method and Bohemia’s Windows manager use it.
Self-hosted versus a managed host: update questions to ask
If you are deciding whether to administer the files yourself or use a managed host, compare capabilities rather than a headline price. The relevant questions are:
- Which operating systems and DayZ branches are supported?
- Can the service automate SteamCMD updates for both server files and Workshop mods?
- Can you schedule restarts and maintenance windows?
- Can you download logs and restore configuration and persistence backups?
- Can you select stable or experimental independently and keep clients on the same branch?
A managed interface can change the buttons and scheduling, but it still needs the same underlying checks: correct branch, current mods, valid keys, preserved configuration and a restart that loads the intended -config file. Verify those capabilities with the provider before migrating a live world.
Quick update checklist
- Record the complete launch command.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Back up
serverDZ.cfg, scripts, profiles, logs and persistence data. - Choose stable (
223350) or experimental (1042420) and keep clients on that branch. - Run SteamCMD in the existing server directory.
- Download every required Workshop item.
- Recreate mod links and copy
.bikeyfiles intokeys. - Restart with the recorded
-config, ports and launch parameters. - Read logs, test a client connection and verify server visibility.
- Keep the backup until the updated world has been confirmed playable.
Following that sequence updates the files without turning a routine patch into a configuration or persistence failure. The essential controls are consistency and reversibility: update the directory you actually run, update the mods separately, start the intended branch and retain a backup you can restore.
