The Deep North will generate correctly only in terrain that no player has explored; if the northern region has already been visited, Iron Gate recommends a new world for the most reliable experience.

The short answer: your old world still works
Valheim 1.0 does not force a world reset. Iron Gate’s July 1, 2026 1.0 FAQ says that old saves remain where you left them and can still be played. Your buildings, inventory, defeated bosses, portals and other progression are therefore available when you open the world in the updated game.

The Deep North is new content in Valheim 1.0, announced on September 9, 2026. Its biome generation works properly only in parts of the map that were not explored before the update. Previously explored terrain is not routinely rewritten, because changing it could damage bases, roads, farms and other player-built structures.
That leaves two valid choices:
- Keep the existing world when preserving your builds and progression matters most and the far north is still unexplored.
- Start a new world when seeing the Deep North with the cleanest intended generation matters more, particularly if players have already traveled through the north.
Iron Gate recommends starting over for the best overall experience, but that is advice rather than a requirement. A wipe is not necessary to access the update.

How exploration controls Deep North generation
“Unexplored” means no player has been there
Iron Gate defines an unexplored area as one where no player has set foot. The official FAQ gives an approximate radius of 500 metres around a visited position. In practical terms, a single trip can mark more terrain as explored than the exact path your character walked.
This is based on player presence, not on whether you built a structure, opened a chest or permanently changed the landscape. If any player entered a region before the update, that region may no longer qualify for new biome generation.
Multiplayer visits count for everyone
Exploration is shared at the world level. On a server, one player’s journey north affects the same world for all players. A friend who sailed ahead, a previous server host or an earlier character can therefore have explored the area even if you personally have never seen it.
Check the travel history of every player who has used the world before deciding whether the northern coastline is safe for Deep North generation. If nobody entered the region, approach it only after updating and avoid scouting it with a character before you are ready to commit to that location.

What happens when you keep the old world
Loading the world does not erase it or move your existing character. You continue from the same save with the same established progression. New content is added to the world even though the seed was created before 1.0, but terrain that the game considers explored is not regenerated wholesale.
For an untouched northern region, travel toward the Deep North after the update and allow the game to generate that area as you reach it. This preserves the rest of your established map while giving the new biome unvisited terrain in which to form.

Previously visited sections may retain their earlier terrain while farther areas generate the new content. Do not assume that an entire cardinal direction is either safe or unusable; the relevant question is where players actually traveled and the surrounding exploration radius.
When a new world is the better choice
A fresh world gives the Deep North a clean generation environment from the start and follows Iron Gate’s recommendation for the best possible 1.0 experience. This is the strongest option when:

- you or another player already explored the northern region;
- you want the new biome to generate without an explored/unexplored boundary;
- you are comfortable replaying early-game progression; or
- you want a separate 1.0 playthrough rather than modifying a long-running save.
Starting over does not repair an old world or migrate its construction automatically. Treat it as a separate playthrough and preserve the original save if you may later want its builds, map discoveries or progression.

Back up the world before the first 1.0 load
Make a backup before opening an important save in the updated game. The most significant safety point is tied to the save-format conversion: Iron Gate’s Patch 1.0.15 notes say the world can be reverted from the backup created when it first loads the new save format.
- Close the game and preserve your existing save. Keep a copy of the world before conversion so an update problem cannot destroy your only version.
- Update Valheim to the 1.0 build. Do not use an old client to make additional changes while you are deciding whether to convert the world.
- Load the world once and identify the conversion backup. The backup created when the new save format is first used is the rollback point described in Patch 1.0.15.
- Test the converted world before making major changes. Confirm that your character, structures and known areas appear as expected.
- Keep the backup until you are satisfied. If you revert, all world progress and changes made after that backup are lost. That includes building, exploration and other actions performed after conversion.
The backup is therefore a recovery option, not a way to try the update with no consequences. Decide which version is authoritative before you spend substantial time in the converted save.
Step-by-step: continue an existing world
- Record who has used the world. Ask every player whether they traveled, sailed or landed in the northern region. Include visits made before the 1.0 update.
- Preserve the pre-conversion save and the automatic conversion backup. Do this before committing to long sessions in the new format.
- Open the existing world in Valheim 1.0. There is no forced wipe and no need to recreate the seed merely to keep playing.
- Verify your important assets. Check a main base, storage, portals, crafting stations and a familiar landmark before setting out. This gives you an early indication that the conversion completed normally.
- Identify a northern route that was never visited. Use multiplayer knowledge as well as your own map history. Remember that the approximate 500-metre exploration radius extends beyond the exact point where a player stood.
- Travel into that untouched area after the update. Sail or travel north and let the game generate the region as you enter it. Avoid treating an already visited coastline as a test of new generation.
- Build and explore only after confirming the terrain. Establish a temporary foothold first if you want to inspect the area before investing heavily in construction.
- Patch the game before troubleshooting terrain. Continue on the latest available 1.0 build, because later fixes changed Deep North behavior.
Step-by-step: start a clean 1.0 world
- Retain the old world as an archive. A new world is an additional playthrough, not a replacement requirement.
- Create a new world after updating. This gives the 1.0 map—including the Deep North—an untouched generation state.
- Choose this route when generation certainty outweighs progression. You will replay early-game exploration, resources and bosses, but you avoid inherited northern exploration.
- Keep the worlds separate. Do not use the old world’s northern discoveries as evidence that the new world has the same terrain layout; each world’s generated map is its own playthrough.
What if the north was already explored?
Previously explored northern terrain is the most common reason to prefer a new world. Because the game avoids rewriting visited areas, loading the old save does not reliably transform that region into a fully formed Deep North biome. Existing structures receive protection from destructive regeneration, but that protection also limits how completely new terrain can replace the old area.

You can still keep the old world for its bases and progression. The decision is about the quality and completeness of the new biome, not whether the save remains playable. If the Deep North is an optional destination and your established world is valuable, continue using it and accept that the already visited region may not match a fresh 1.0 map.

If the Deep North is the main reason you are returning to Valheim, create a new world instead. This avoids spending hours sailing around a pre-explored boundary and then discovering that the location cannot regenerate as intended.

Patch 1.0.15 conversion rollback
Patch 1.0.15 documents the save-format conversion backup. If the converted world has a serious problem, reverting to that backup can restore the pre-conversion state. The cost is total loss of every world change made after the backup was created, so copy or preserve anything important before using the rollback.
Patch 1.0.16 terrain reversion
Patch 1.0.16 fixed a bug that could cause Deep North terrain modifications to revert after the area was unloaded. If a slope, excavation or other change disappears after you leave and return, first update to 1.0.16 or a later build before assuming the world is permanently damaged.
Iron Gate noted that some visual terrain seams can remain even after the bug fix. A seam may look like a gap, edge or mismatched surface rather than a complete loss of the biome. The stated manual remedies are to work the area with a pickaxe or hoe, or walk over the snow so the surface can settle. Make a backup before extensive repairs, especially on a converted world.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The old world does not appear
- Confirm that you are using the same game installation and account profile that held the original save.
- Check the preserved pre-update copy rather than repeatedly opening and modifying the converted file.
- Use the conversion backup described in Patch 1.0.15 if the save was changed during the first 1.0 load and now behaves incorrectly.
Do not delete the original copy while diagnosing the issue. A rollback is useful only while the earlier version remains available.
The Deep North is missing where you expected it
- Determine whether any player visited that area before 1.0.
- Account for the approximate 500-metre radius around visited positions.
- Test farther north in terrain that no player has entered, rather than repeatedly unloading and reloading an already explored zone.
- Start a new world if the entire target region was explored and a complete Deep North experience is essential.
Terrain changes revert after leaving
- Update to Patch 1.0.16 or a newer release.
- Return to the location and check whether the change now persists after unloading.
- Repair remaining visual seams with a pickaxe, hoe or by walking over the snow, as appropriate for the affected surface.
Only part of the northern area looks correct
This can indicate a transition between visited and unvisited terrain rather than a failed save. Compare the location with the multiplayer travel history and move into a clearly untouched region. If an uninterrupted, predictable biome is more important than keeping the old map, use a new world.

A practical pre-flight checklist
- Update the game before making a final judgment about the biome.
- Copy the world before its first 1.0 save-format conversion.
- Identify and retain the automatic conversion backup.
- Record which players have visited the north.
- Include the approximate 500-metre radius when judging whether terrain is unexplored.
- Decide whether preserving existing construction or obtaining a clean Deep North matters more.
- If continuing the old world, approach only terrain that no player has entered.
- If the north was explored, use a new world for the most reliable generation.
- Install Patch 1.0.16 or later before investigating terrain reversion.
- Repair residual seams manually only after protecting the save you may need to restore.
Bottom line for your save
There is no mandatory wipe for Valheim 1.0. Keep your existing world when its builds and progression are valuable, provided you can reach an unexplored northern region. Choose a new world when the north has already been explored or when a clean, predictable Deep North generation is the main goal. In either case, protect the pre-conversion save and the Patch 1.0.15 rollback backup before making changes, and run Patch 1.0.16 or newer to avoid the known terrain-reversion bug.
