You can move an Abiotic Factor Steam world to a dedicated server without restarting. Stop the server, copy the entire world folder from your local Steam save, upload it to the server’s AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/ directory, and configure the server to use that folder name. The folder must include player data and every save file; uploading one .sav file is not enough.
What this migration supports
The documented procedure is for worlds created by the Steam version of Abiotic Factor. Game Host Bros and GhostCap state that their transfer workflow does not support saves from PlayStation 5, Xbox, or Windows Game Pass. If your world comes from one of those platforms, do not expect the Steam-folder method to work.

Depending on the host, that may be a browser file manager, FTP, or SFTP. The panel labels can differ, but the important details remain the same: upload the complete world directory to the server save path and make the server load that directory by name.
- A Steam installation with the local world you want to move.
- File-manager, FTP, or SFTP access to the dedicated server.
- Permission to stop and start the server and change its world-save setting or launch parameters.
- A separate backup of both the local world and any world currently on the server.
Know the source and destination paths
On Windows, Steam worlds are stored below your local AppData folder. Each world is represented by a folder, not by a single save file.

In the local path, <SteamID64> identifies the Steam account directory and <WorldName> is the folder name you gave the world. Do not type the angle brackets; they indicate values that vary on your computer.
Transfer the world step by step
1. Stop the dedicated server and make two backups
Stop the server from its control panel before changing any files. Host Havoc Technical Support Team states, “Stop the server before uploading any files to avoid data corruption.” The warning matters because a running server may be writing save data while an upload replaces it.

Also download or copy the server’s existing world before replacing anything. Give the backups clear names, such as the world name plus the date, so you can roll back if the upload is incomplete or the wrong folder is selected.
2. Locate the local Steam world
- Open File Explorer on the Windows PC that contains the Steam save.
- Enter
%LocalAppData%AbioticFactorSavedSaveGamesin the address bar. - Open the folder named with your SteamID64, then open
Worlds. - Identify the folder for the world you intend to host. The folder name is the value you will later use as the server’s world-save name.
Open the world folder and confirm that it contains the complete set of data. A normal transfer includes the PlayerData directory, WorldSave_MetaData.sav, the area save files, and any SandboxSettings.ini file present in that world folder. The exact collection of area files can vary with the world, so do not try to select only the files that look familiar.
3. Copy the entire world folder
Copy the world directory itself, including every file and subfolder. In a file manager, this means selecting the folder under Worlds, not opening it and choosing a single save file. If you use FTP or SFTP, preserve the same directory structure while uploading.

Upload the folder into:
AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/
The result should be a path such as AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/MyWorld/PlayerData/, with the remaining save files inside MyWorld. Do not place the files directly in Worlds without their containing world folder.

Dedicated servers use a world-save name. The default folder name documented by the guides is Cascade. You have two ways to make the setting match your upload:
- Rename the uploaded world folder to
Cascade. - Leave the folder’s original name and set the host’s World Save Name field, or the launch parameter
-WorldSaveName=<folder name>, to that exact name.
For example, if the uploaded directory is named ResearchBase, the launch parameter is -WorldSaveName=ResearchBase. The value must match the folder name you uploaded. A mismatch can make the server create or open a different world, which looks like the transfer failed even though the files are present.
Some panels expose the setting under a startup, launch-options, or configuration page rather than under the file manager. Change the value while the server is stopped, save the configuration, and follow the host’s restart requirement before testing.
5. Keep player data and sandbox settings with the world
PlayerData/ is part of the world folder. It should be uploaded with the world rather than copied separately. Leaving it behind can remove the progression stored in that directory even when the map itself loads.

If the world uses custom sandbox rules, transfer the SandboxSettings.ini found in the world folder and apply it according to the host’s documented configuration location. Some hosts require a restart after changing this file. Do not assume that a panel-wide settings file is interchangeable with the copy inside the world; preserve the world’s file first, then follow the host’s instructions if it requires an additional configuration step.
6. Start the server and verify the result
- Confirm that the upload has finished and that the world folder is inside
Server/Worlds. - Confirm that World Save Name or
-WorldSaveNameexactly matches that folder’s name. - Start the dedicated server.
- Join it and check for the expected base, explored areas, stored items, and player progression.
If the expected world appears, stop and start the server once more only if your host requires a restart to apply settings. Keep the local backup until you have joined successfully and confirmed the important parts of the world.
Using a host’s file tools safely
Browser file manager
A browser file manager is convenient for a small world or a host that provides an upload button. Open the server’s file browser, navigate to AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/, and upload the complete folder. If the interface only accepts individual files, create the world directory first and upload all contents while retaining the PlayerData subfolder.
FTP
FTP clients show the local and remote panes side by side. Browse the local pane to the world folder and the remote pane to AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/. Transfer the directory recursively so that subfolders and all save files are included. Wait for the client’s queue to finish before starting the server.
SFTP
SFTP provides the same directory logic over an SFTP connection. Use the credentials and port supplied by the host, then upload the world directory recursively. If a transfer is interrupted, compare the local and remote contents and resume or replace the incomplete folder while the server remains stopped.

Regardless of the tool, the host’s access method does not change the required destination or the world-name match. If the host does not provide file access, ask whether it offers a migration service or a supported way to upload an existing save before purchasing or configuring the server.

The world-save name does not match
This is the first check when the server starts an empty map. Compare the directory name under Server/Worlds with the panel’s World Save Name value or the text after -WorldSaveName=. Correct the mismatch, stop the server, and start it again.
The folder is nested one level too deep
Uploads can accidentally produce a path such as Worlds/MyWorld/MyWorld/WorldSave_MetaData.sav. The server expects the save files directly inside the selected world folder, for example Worlds/MyWorld/WorldSave_MetaData.sav. Move the inner contents up one level while the server is stopped.
Only one save file was uploaded
A single .sav file cannot represent the complete world transfer described by the provider guides. Re-upload the entire original folder, including PlayerData, metadata, area saves, and any sandbox settings file.
The upload was performed while the server was running
Stop the server, restore the clean backup, and repeat the upload. Replacing files during active writes can leave an inconsistent world. Do not delete your local copy until the corrected server has been verified.
The panel saved a different startup configuration
Some hosts separate the displayed world setting from the actual launch command. After saving the configuration, review the startup or command-line page and confirm that the effective value still points to the uploaded folder. If the panel exposes server logs, inspect them for a path or world-name error after restarting.

When player progress or settings are missing
Player progress is absent
Stop the server and inspect the uploaded folder for PlayerData. It must be inside the selected world directory, not beside it in Worlds. Compare the remote folder with the untouched local backup and upload the missing directory if necessary.
Custom sandbox rules are absent
Check whether SandboxSettings.ini existed in the original world folder. If it did, make sure that file was included and that the host’s documented location is being used. Restart when the host requires it, then verify the rules in-game.
The map loads but appears older
Recheck which local folder you copied. Multiple world folders can exist under the same SteamID64 directory. Use the folder name and its contents to identify the intended world, and compare the server copy with the backup made immediately before transfer.
Choosing a dedicated-server host for an existing save
Price and performance are not enough to judge migration support. Before committing to a host, ask these specific questions:

Ask the host where its file manager opens by default and whether it permits recursive folder uploads. Also ask how to set -WorldSaveName if the panel does not show a World Save Name field. These answers are more useful for this migration than a generic claim that the host supports Abiotic Factor.
A repeatable backup and rollback routine
Use a simple routine whenever you replace a hosted world:
- Stop the server.
- Copy the current remote world to a dated backup location.
- Keep the original local Steam folder unchanged.
- Upload the replacement world as a complete directory.
- Set and verify the world-save name.
- Start the server and test the world.
- Only after successful testing, archive the backups rather than deleting them.
If the test fails, stop the server before making another change. Restore the remote backup or the original server world, correct one issue at a time, and restart. This gives you a known-good recovery point instead of repeatedly modifying an uncertain copy.
