How free roam unlocks after the final boss
Free roam is a post-game cleanup state rather than a separate menu or item. The game places you back in the final-fight room after the ending sequence, where Lucjan and a Lantern provide the route back to the rest of the world.

- Defeat the final boss.
- Allow the credits to finish.
- Reload your save.
- Look around the room where the final fight began. Lucjan is standing beside a Lantern.
- Speak with Lucjan.
- Interact with the Lantern and select Travel.
- Choose a Lantern you discovered and kindled earlier.
The destination list is based on Lanterns you have already activated. The post-game state does not create a new route to undiscovered locations; it restores the Lantern travel system so you can revisit places you reached during the story.
Where to find the post-game Lantern
Return to the final-fight room
After the credits, you do not reappear at a generic world-map screen. Reloading places you in the room where the final encounter started. If you are looking for the Lantern elsewhere, you can miss the interaction point because the important objects are together in this room.

Talk to Lucjan before using the Lantern
Lucjan is beside the Lantern. Speak with him, then interact with the Lantern and select Travel. That sequence is the intended post-game handoff. Once the travel list opens, select any previously kindled Lantern to return to its region.
No extra item is needed
The unlock is tied to story completion, the finished credits, and the reload that follows. You do not need to obtain a separate key, purchase an upgrade, or equip a special object to activate free roam.
The University point of no return
There is a temporary restriction before the ending that is easy to mistake for a permanent lockout. In University, the Lantern immediately before the encounter with Captain Raphael of the Nephtis Superioris is the last normal chance to fast-travel before the finale sequence.

After you enter Raphael’s encounter and complete the following cutscene, William is taken into Napoleon’s Prison. Lantern travel is disabled during that sequence. You cannot use the normal travel network again until after the final boss.

Why this matters
Raphael’s pre-fight Lantern is the practical preparation point for optional content. If you still have side quests, collectibles, Ambers, upgrade materials, or unexplored routes in earlier regions, use that Lantern to travel and finish what you can before entering the arena. If you continue past Raphael, the content is not permanently lost according to the described progression: travel returns when the final boss is defeated and the post-game room becomes available.
When to clean up: before Raphael or after the ending?
You have two useful cleanup windows. The difference is whether the Lantern network is currently available or has been temporarily disabled by the ending sequence.

The choice is mostly about convenience. Before Raphael, you can move through the world without the temporary ending restriction. After the boss, you gain access to the complete cleanup state and the late abilities you acquired during the final stretch.

Finish side quests
Use Travel to revisit the regions connected to unfinished side quests. The post-game state is designed to let you return to earlier areas rather than forcing you to complete every optional objective before the finale.

Find missed collectibles and Ambers
Earlier maps can contain items that are easy to pass during a first story run. The developer describes Valor Mortis as an exploration-focused game with optional rewards away from the main path, and notes that many Ambers are unlikely to be found in one playthrough. Free roam gives you a structured way to revisit those locations.
Gather upgrade materials
Previously visited regions remain useful after the story. Travel back to areas where you left upgrade materials behind, then combine that collection work with any side quests or unexplored branches in the same region.
Recheck blocked routes
Do not assume that a path you could not open earlier is permanently inaccessible. Late-game abilities, including later Transmutations, can open areas you already visited. That makes a second pass more than a search for items you simply overlooked. When you revisit a region, check passages, platforms, or interaction points that were previously beyond your available abilities.

How Lantern fast travel works in the story
The post-game procedure uses the same Lantern system introduced earlier. Fast travel first becomes available after you defeat General Lothaire, reach the Abandoned Church, and activate its Lantern. If you used that system during the campaign, the post-game Travel option follows the same basic interaction pattern.
The important distinction is between discovering a Lantern and being able to select it later. A region appears as a travel destination after you have reached and kindled its Lantern. Post-game free roam lets you choose among those previously activated points; it does not automatically reveal every location in the game.

1. Confirm the ending state
After the final boss, let the credits complete, then reload. If you quit before the credits finish, the post-game return sequence has not been confirmed in the game state described here, so complete that step before troubleshooting the Lantern.

2. Use the final room as your starting hub
When the save loads, stay in the final-fight room long enough to locate Lucjan and the Lantern. You do not need to retrace the campaign or search the previous region for a hidden travel point.
3. Open Travel and choose a known destination
Talk to Lucjan first. Then use the Lantern’s Travel command and select a Lantern you know you kindled. Start with a region where you remember leaving an unfinished objective; this confirms that the travel list is working before you plan a broader sweep.
4. Revisit regions in groups
For an efficient cleanup, handle objectives by region rather than jumping randomly between destinations. In each area, check your outstanding side quests, examine optional paths, collect visible Ambers and other items, and look for routes that may now respond to late abilities. This reduces repeated trips through the same Lantern menu.
5. Recheck ability-gated locations
After your first pass, return to locations where the story previously stopped you. Your late-game abilities are the reason those areas may now be reachable. Treat old barriers as reminders for a second visit, not as proof that the content is unavailable.
Troubleshooting the free-roam unlock
The Lantern does not show Travel
- Verify that the final boss was defeated.
- Make sure the credits finished before you reloaded.
- Confirm that you loaded the post-ending save rather than an earlier manual save.
- Return to the room where the final fight began.
- Find Lucjan beside the Lantern and speak with him before interacting with it.
Those checks follow the documented unlock sequence. The travel command is associated with Lucjan’s Lantern in the final-fight room, not with the Lantern immediately before Raphael.
A region is missing from the travel list
Travel destinations are Lanterns you previously discovered and kindled. If a location is absent, check whether you actually activated its Lantern during the story. The post-game unlock restores access to known Lanterns; it is not described as an all-regions reveal.
Travel worked earlier but is unavailable after Raphael
That is expected during the Napoleon’s Prison sequence. The game disables Lantern travel after the Raphael cutscene and restores it only after the final boss. Continue through the ending, finish the credits, reload, and use Lucjan’s Lantern in the final-fight room.
Is New Game Plus available?
New Game Plus should not be confused with free roam. The free-roam procedure above is the post-ending return to previously kindled Lanterns. A separate New Game Plus addition was reported as planned for the fourth quarter of 2026, but that plan does not establish that the mode is playable on October 19, 2026. If you only want to revisit regions and complete missed content, you do not need to wait for or start New Game Plus.
