Enshrouded’s Magic Chest is a five-tier storage family, not one recipe. Rescue the Blacksmith during Find the Sleeping Survivor to reveal the Small Magic Chest; accept Table Saw For The Carpenter for the Medium; collect Tin Ore for the Large; collect Iron Ore for the Huge; and obtain Gold Bars for the Enormous. The Blacksmith crafts the Small tier, while the Carpenter crafts every larger tier.
Magic Chest unlocks at a glance
Each recipe appears after a specific progression event. The event that reveals a recipe is separate from the materials needed to build the chest afterward. Seeing a recipe in a crafter’s menu therefore does not mean you already have everything required to make it.

The sequence is linear in storage size, but the type of gate changes as you progress: an NPC rescue unlocks the first tier, a quest acceptance unlocks the second, and ore or bar acquisition unlocks the final three. If a tier is missing, check the trigger before farming its ingredients.
What actually unlocks a Magic Chest recipe
Unlock events reveal recipes
The game uses an event-based recipe system. Recruiting or rescuing a crafter can add recipes to that crafter’s menu, accepting a named quest can satisfy a recipe condition, and placing a newly acquired ore or bar in your inventory can reveal a later recipe. The trigger is the condition that makes the recipe appear; it is not a substitute for the recipe’s component materials.
#1 Best Overall
Recipes are tied to specific crafters
The Blacksmith owns the Small Magic Chest recipe. The Carpenter owns the Medium, Large, Huge and Enormous recipes. Opening the wrong crafting station can make an already-unlocked tier appear to be unavailable, so use the named crafter rather than relying on a generic workbench search.
Storage size increases by tier
The five capacities rise from 16 slots at Small to 72 slots at Enormous. The increases are not uniform: Medium doubles the Small chest’s capacity, while the later jumps are 8, 16 and 16 slots. Choose the next tier based on the trigger you can reach and the materials you can sustain, not only on the visual name of the chest.
Step-by-step progression from the first chest to the largest
- Follow the early survivor objectives. Continue the opening progression until the quest Find the Sleeping Survivor leads you to the Blacksmith.
- Rescue the Blacksmith. Once the rescue is complete, open the Blacksmith’s crafting menu and look for Small Magic Chest. The rescue is the unlock condition; gathering materials comes after the recipe is visible.
- Access the Carpenter. Recruit or otherwise gain access to the Carpenter, then accept the quest Table Saw For The Carpenter. Acceptance of this quest, rather than merely meeting the Carpenter, is the gate for Medium Magic Chest.
- Check the Carpenter’s menu. After accepting the table-saw quest, verify that Medium Magic Chest appears. Gather one Medium Chest, one Shroud Core and two Goo before attempting the craft.
- Put Tin Ore in your inventory. Explore until you obtain Tin Ore. That acquisition unlocks Large Magic Chest at the Carpenter. The ore is the trigger; the recipe still calls for a Large Chest, Shroud Particles and Alchemical Base.
- Obtain Iron Ore. Continue into areas where Iron Ore can be found and pick up at least one piece. Iron Ore unlocks Huge Magic Chest at the Carpenter. Then collect the listed Huge-tier components.
- Obtain Gold Bars. Later progression supplies Gold Bars. Acquiring them reveals Enormous Magic Chest at the Carpenter, after which you can gather the wood, Shroud materials and additional bars shown in the recipe.
- Craft and place the chest. Use the correct crafter’s menu, confirm every ingredient, craft the chest, and place it inside the Flame Altar base where you want workshops to access its contents.
If the recipe does not appear immediately after a trigger, leave and reopen the crafter’s menu, confirm the trigger item is in the character’s inventory, and check that the quest was accepted rather than merely displayed. Recipe conditions can change with game updates, so the panel in your current build is the final authority.
Small Magic Chest: rescue the Blacksmith
Unlock condition
Complete the Blacksmith rescue in Find the Sleeping Survivor. The rescue unlocks Small Magic Chest in the Blacksmith’s crafting menu. This is the first Magic Chest route and does not require the Carpenter.
Where to craft it
Use the Blacksmith’s station or menu after the survivor has been retrieved. If you search the Carpenter for the first tier, you will not find it because the crafter assignment changes at the next tier.
What the tier is for
With 16 slots, the Small chest is an early upgrade over ordinary storage. It is useful for consolidating the materials you collect while recruiting survivors and establishing a first Flame Altar base. The cited recipe data do not state the Small chest’s ingredient list, so rely on the live recipe panel for the exact components in your version rather than assuming they match a later tier.

Medium Magic Chest: accept the Carpenter’s table-saw quest
Unlock condition
Gain access to the Carpenter and accept Table Saw For The Carpenter. Quest acceptance is the unlock event for Medium Magic Chest. Simply having the Carpenter available without accepting that quest may leave the recipe hidden.
Crafting requirements
The recipe consumes one Medium Chest, one Shroud Core and two Goo. The Medium Chest is a base container used in the conversion, while the Shroud Core and Goo are additional requirements; unlocking does not provide any of them automatically.
When to make it
At 32 slots, Medium is the first substantial capacity increase and often makes sense as the central chest in an early workshop. Craft it once the Carpenter quest is active and the three components are available, rather than waiting for Tin Ore if your immediate problem is limited storage.

Large Magic Chest: collect Tin Ore
Unlock condition
Pick up Tin Ore during exploration. The acquisition unlocks Large Magic Chest in the Carpenter’s menu. The condition is possession of Tin Ore, not completion of a separately named ore quest in the supplied recipe entry.
Recommended Free Tools
Crafting requirements
Large Magic Chest uses one Large Chest, ten Shroud Particles and one Alchemical Base. These are independent of the Tin Ore trigger. You can reveal the recipe as soon as Tin Ore enters your inventory and still need a separate materials run before the craft button becomes available.
Planning the upgrade
The Large tier provides 40 slots. Before traveling for components, check that you have a Large Chest ready and that your stock of Shroud Particles and Alchemical Base covers the full recipe. This avoids reaching the Carpenter with an unlocked recipe but no usable upgrade.
Huge Magic Chest: collect Iron Ore
Unlock condition
Obtain Iron Ore from the iron-bearing part of your progression. Once the item is acquired, Huge Magic Chest unlocks at the Carpenter.
Crafting requirements
The recipe requires one Huge Chest, one Shroud Nexus and three Enshrouded Oil. Iron Ore itself is the discovery condition and is not listed as a crafting ingredient for the Huge chest. Keep that distinction in mind when deciding whether you have completed the unlock or merely gathered a component for another project.

Huge provides 56 slots, making it suitable for a workshop chest that receives several material categories. Because its recipe depends on a Shroud Nexus and Enshrouded Oil in addition to the base Huge Chest, check all three requirements before returning to the Carpenter.
Enormous Magic Chest: obtain Gold Bars
Unlock condition
Acquire Gold Bars later in progression. Gold Bars are the trigger that reveals Enormous Magic Chest at the Carpenter. The unlock occurs when the bar is obtained; crafting the chest consumes two Gold Bars, so the trigger does not leave you with the complete material bill.
Crafting requirements
The Enormous recipe calls for 24 Wood Planks, one Shroud Radiance, 15 Shroud Slime and two Gold Bars. Unlike the previous tiers, it does not use a same-sized ordinary chest in the listed materials. Gather the exact quantities shown in the recipe panel before starting the build.

At 72 slots, Enormous is the largest Magic Chest in this five-tier progression. It is the storage choice for a mature base where consolidating many workshop inputs is more valuable than producing several smaller containers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to craft and place a Magic Chest correctly
Use the named crafter
Travel to the Blacksmith for Small or to the Carpenter for Medium through Enormous. Open that character’s crafting menu, select the unlocked tier, and confirm the ingredient quantities. A generic construction menu will not replace the crafter requirement.
Verify the recipe before a materials run
- Confirm the trigger has been completed: Blacksmith rescue, Carpenter quest acceptance, Tin Ore, Iron Ore or Gold Bars.
- Confirm the correct crafter is available.
- Read the live ingredient list in your game, especially for Small, whose component list is not stated in the cited data.
- Separate unlock items from consumed items. Tin Ore and Iron Ore reveal recipes, while the listed chest materials are what the craft consumes.
Place it inside the Flame Altar base
After crafting, place the chest in your Flame Altar base and organize it near the workshops that use its contents. The storage overview describes Magic Chest contents as available to workshops within their operating area. That overview also warns that range information may change after updates, so treat the current in-game behavior as authoritative and move the chest closer if a workshop cannot draw from it.
Test workshop access
- Put a clearly identifiable material in the Magic Chest.
- Open a nearby workshop that can use that material.
- Check whether the material is offered from storage without manually moving it.
- If it is not available, verify that both chest and workshop are inside the same active base area, then test again after repositioning the chest.
Unlock problems and fixes
The Small recipe is missing
- Confirm that Find the Sleeping Survivor is complete and the Blacksmith was actually rescued.
- Open the Blacksmith’s menu, not the Carpenter’s.
- Exit and reopen the menu after the rescue so the recipe list refreshes.
The Medium recipe is missing
- Check that the Carpenter is accessible.
- Verify that Table Saw For The Carpenter was accepted. Viewing or tracking a quest is not the same as accepting it.
- Revisit the Carpenter after acceptance and inspect the Medium category.
Large, Huge or Enormous does not appear
- Make sure the trigger item entered your inventory: Tin Ore for Large, Iron Ore for Huge or Gold Bars for Enormous.
- Use the Carpenter’s menu for all three tiers.
- Reopen the menu after collecting the item. If the trigger still does not register, collect another piece or bar and check again.
- Check the recipe panel in your current game build. The cited wiki entries do not provide publication years, and recipe conditions can be revised by updates.
The recipe is visible but cannot be crafted
This is normally a materials issue rather than an unlock issue. Compare your inventory with the exact quantities in the table and the live panel. For Medium through Huge, remember to obtain the same-sized base chest as well as the Shroud or alchemical components. For Enormous, count the Wood Planks, Shroud Radiance, Shroud Slime and two Gold Bars separately.
A workshop cannot see chest contents
Confirm that the chest and workshop are within the same Flame Altar operating area. Because range details may have changed, do not rely on an old layout guide. Move the chest nearer to the workshop and repeat the simple test with a recognizable material.
Planning storage upgrades efficiently
Use a trigger-first checklist
When deciding what to do next, identify the earliest missing trigger rather than collecting every material at once. Rescue the Blacksmith first, then accept the Carpenter’s table-saw quest, then pursue Tin Ore, Iron Ore and Gold Bars in that order. This sequence reveals recipes as your progression advances and prevents wasted trips to a crafter whose tier is still locked.
Keep unlock items and craft stock separate
Store spare ore and bars only after the recipe has registered. Tin Ore and Iron Ore are discovery triggers for their tiers, while the listed recipes consume different materials. Gold Bars have both roles in the Enormous path: obtaining them reveals the recipe, and two bars are required to build it.
Choose one central chest or several specialized chests
Magic Chest contents can support workshops within the operating area, so a central placement can reduce manual transfers. Several chests may be preferable when your base has separated production rooms or when one chest’s capacity is insufficient for a material category. The tier capacities let you match the container to the scale of the base: Small and Medium suit early construction, while Large, Huge and Enormous support progressively broader inventories.

The recipe entries identify the unlock events and capacities, but they do not include dated publication information, and the storage overview flags range data as potentially changed. If a familiar trigger fails, inspect the current in-game recipe panel and the quest state before assuming your save is broken.
