To unlock Book IV—labeled Book 4 in the game—first collect every story reward in Book 1. From the home screen, open the menu, choose Change Stories, and select Book 4. That unlocks access to the book; its individual chapters then require Story Fragments earned as battle rewards.
What you must do
There are two separate progression gates, and confusing them is the most common reason players think Book 4 has not unlocked:

| Goal | Requirement | Where it happens |
|---|---|---|
| Unlock access to Book 4 | Collect all of Book 1’s story rewards | Book 1 progress, then the home-screen menu |
| Switch into Book 4 | Use Change Stories and select Book 4 | Home screen |
| Open Book 4 chapters | Collect Story Fragments from battle rewards | Battle results and the Book 4 story screen |
Clearing or entering Book 4 is therefore not the same as opening every chapter. Book 1 unlocks the book-selection feature; Story Fragments handle chapter-by-chapter progression after you switch stories.
Step-by-step: unlock Book IV
1. Finish Book 1’s story-reward requirements
Play through Book 1 and collect all of its story rewards. Nintendo’s full instruction describes this as the prerequisite for unlocking and switching to new Books. A current Google Play release note summarizes the same gate as “Clear Book 1 to access Book 4,” but the more precise in-game objective is to make sure every Book 1 story reward has been collected.
#1 Best Overall
- Here, order is maintained by the Church of Seiros from its headquarters at Garreg Mach Monastery, home to the Officers Academy, where you’re invited to teach one of its three mighty houses: The Black Eagles, The Blue Lions, and The Golden Deer.
- Which house will you choose?
- As its professor, you must lead your students in class and in tactical RPG battles wrought with strategic, new twists to overcome.
- Check the Book 1 story screen rather than assuming that simply reaching its final battle is enough.
- Confirm that no Book 1 story-reward entry remains unclaimed.
- If the game distinguishes between completing a battle and collecting its reward, complete the collection step as well.
The available official instructions do not state a required player level, team composition, number of battles, or amount of play time for this prerequisite. Do not rely on an estimated battle count as a condition for unlocking the menu.
2. Return to the home screen
After the Book 1 rewards are collected, leave the story and return to the game’s home screen. The relevant control is located in the home-screen menu, not inside an individual Book 1 battle.
3. Open Change Stories
Open the home-screen menu and select Change Stories. Nintendo identifies this option as the route used to unlock and switch to new Books after the Book 1 reward requirement has been met.

4. Select Book 4
Choose Book 4 from the available story choices. The game may display the Roman-numeral form “Book IV” in player discussions or guides, but the official release wording and the game’s listing use “Book 4.” Selecting it changes the active story; it does not automatically grant every chapter.
5. Check the Book 4 chapter screen
Once Book 4 is active, inspect its story map or chapter list. Chapters that are not yet open require Story Fragments. The chapters become available as you collect the required battle rewards; the official instructions do not publish a universal fragment total or a fixed number of battles for each chapter.
How Book 4 chapter unlocking works
Story Fragments come from battle rewards
Story Fragments are earned as battle rewards. They are the progression currency for opening Book 4’s individual story chapters, rather than an item you obtain by merely selecting Book 4 from the menu.

- The Officers Academy is home to three houses: The Black Eagles with house leader Edelgard, The Blue Lions with house leader Dimitri, and The Golden Deer with house leader Claude
- As a professor, lead students in their academic lives and on the battlefield
- A turn-based, tactical RPG that puts new twists on strategic battling
- Freely roam Garreg Mach Monastery and interact with students in a variety of ways to bond with them. In the classroom, tutor your students to help them
- Grow in the skill sets required to become specific classes
- Switch to Book 4 through Change Stories.
- Play available battles.
- Review the battle-result rewards and collect any Story Fragments awarded there.
- Return to the Book 4 chapter screen and check which chapter has become available.
- Repeat the battle-and-reward cycle until the next chapter opens.
No official source in the available materials gives a guaranteed fragment drop rate, a minimum number of victories, or a time estimate. Your required number of battles can therefore vary with the rewards you receive and with later changes to the game.

Light and shadow stories progress independently
Fire Emblem Shadows presents Book 4 through light and shadow story sides. Battles fought on a particular side advance that side’s corresponding story. If you want to open a chapter in the light story, use the light-side progression; for a shadow-side chapter, continue the shadow-side progression.
The official play guide also says that any disciple can be used in either story. You do not need to restrict your disciple choice to a character associated with the side you are currently advancing. The side of the battle determines which story progresses, while disciple selection remains flexible.

What was available at the Book 4 release snapshot
Nintendo’s announcement dated September 25, 2026 identifies Book 4 as An Island Apart. That announcement says Chapters 1 and 2 were added for both the light and shadow stories at that time.
| Item | Officially stated availability | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Book 4 title | An Island Apart | Nintendo announcement dated September 25, 2026 |
| Light story | Chapters 1 and 2 added | Status reported in that dated announcement |
| Shadow story | Chapters 1 and 2 added | Status reported in that dated announcement |
This is a release-time snapshot, not a guarantee that the same chapter list will remain unchanged. New chapters, labels, and menu behavior can change in later app versions. If your current chapter list differs, use the version installed on your device as the authority for what is presently playable.
If Book 4 does not appear
Book 1 is complete, but the menu still has no Book 4
- Reopen Book 1 and verify that every story reward—not only the final battle—has been collected.
- Return fully to the home screen before looking for Change Stories.
- Close and relaunch the game, then check the home-screen menu again.
- Confirm that the app is updated. The Book 4 release information is tied to a dated app update, and later versions can alter menu placement.
If the option remains absent after these checks, the installed version or account state may not yet include the Book 4 content. The published instructions do not identify another prerequisite such as a level, currency purchase, or special disciple.
Best Value
- Enter the Dagdan Empire—a prosperous land ruled by the gods—and compete in the Heroic Games for the chance to be granted one wish
- Play as four heroes competing in the Heroic Games whose fortunes are tied to the fate of the world
- Prepare for each match of the Heroic Games by exploring Dagda and its capital city of Dagsion
- Learn skills at the training grounds, recruit allies and build bonds of friendship, and explore beyond Dagsion’s walls to gain experience
- Use everything you have at your disposal, including your heroes’ special abilities, to turn the tide of battle
Book 4 appears, but a chapter is locked
- Open the chapter list and read the lock requirement shown for that chapter.
- Play battles while the intended light or shadow story is active.
- Collect the battle-result rewards; a completed battle is not useful for progression if its reward screen was not claimed.
- Check your Story Fragment total after each reward screen.
Do not treat access to Book 4 as proof that all chapters are open. Book access and chapter access are deliberately separate steps.
Fragments seem to be advancing the wrong story
Check which side you selected before starting the battle. Nintendo’s play guide states that battles on a given side advance that side’s story. Switch to the light side or shadow side that matches the chapter you are trying to unlock, then earn additional battle rewards there.
The menu labels differ from the instructions
Use the function’s meaning rather than relying on an exact position or icon. The documented route is the home-screen menu’s story-switching control, labeled Change Stories in Nintendo’s instructions. Menu placement can move between versions, and the public release note may use the shorter wording “Clear Book 1 to access Book 4.”
Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping after the final Book 1 battle: the requirement is to collect all Book 1 story rewards.
- Searching inside Book 1 for the switch: Change Stories is accessed from the home-screen menu.
- Expecting all chapters immediately: Story Fragments unlock chapters after Book 4 access is available.
- Playing the wrong story side: light-side battles advance the light story and shadow-side battles advance the shadow story.
- Restricting disciples unnecessarily: the play guide says any disciple may be used in either story.
- Assuming a fixed fragment or battle number: no official number is published in the cited materials.
- Using an old chapter list as a current guarantee: the September 25, 2026 announcement reports what was added at that date, not every later release.
Quick completion checklist
- Book 1’s story rewards: all collected.
- Home screen reached.
- Home-screen menu opened.
- Change Stories selected.
- Book 4 selected.
- Target story side chosen: light or shadow.
- Battles completed on that side.
- Story Fragments collected from battle rewards.
- Book 4 chapter list checked after each reward.
Following those steps is the documented route to Book IV access and chapter progression. If a current version still behaves differently after the checklist, verify the app’s update status and the exact Book 1 reward state before looking for a different unlock condition.
